hellOOOO everyone! i hope you're all doing your best to stay safe out there! how have you been doing? have climbing gyms in your area opened yet?
adjusting to the home wall has been an interesting process - i've learned that setting is not an inherent skill that you have once you've been climbing for a couple of years... i'm really, REALLY bad at it! but i'm going to move some of these holds around and maybe try to come up with some bangers for the future :~)

I think most of us stuck at home are dying for climbing content! So we'd love to see more of your home wall! It's not a flex Also I like these little chats! I like that they're "optional" but I always stick around because it's nice to learn more about you beyond just your climbing. You speak very real-ly and somehow it feels personal, which is nice. We're all a little lonely these days.

Just kinda binge watched a ton of your videos 😂 you’re frikkin hilarious! I feel you with the quarantine situation- I decided to post the home wall videos I edited on my channel and it definitely felt like a flex, but in the end people have really appreciated it. I think it’s really nice to have a climbing related escape from the very real, very serious, very ubiquitous covid19 pandemic. Looking forward to watching more of your vids!

You can definitely drill screw holes in that hold. Put a T nut in your work surface and anchor the hold before drilling. Countersink your hole before you screw it. Ask your roommates if any of this doesn't make sense Get some colored gaffers tape (duct tape will work but leaves behind residue) so you can mark out alternate or mixed-color routes That wall could definitely use 2 or 3 volumes. There are a few types that are easy enough for a novice woodworker to build and would make for interesting videos. I'm thinking 2 different size triangles and a mis-shaped rectangle. Less than a full sheet of plywood, wood glue, screws. Watch Climber Dad's videos on building volumes and in one he brings up a small yellow tool. It's an angle finder or square or some such thing. I found it absolutely priceless while building volumes. It costs a dollar or two at Harbor Freight. The triangle volumes are so easy you don't even need it though. A learning experience for you and your viewers. It would be neat to see your wall have more dimension, plus they make the wall more fun Also, agreed. I used more math and trig building climbing walls and volumes than I have anything else

I am not subscribed really long to your channel. I think the first video I saw was about the climbing shoes. It is really helpful and inspiring to me to see another climber just dealing her own way with the crisis and with the impossibility of climbing in the gym right now. I think your home wall is amazing! The fact that you have one is really lucky ofcourse :) The routes look great already! I can't imagine building my own routes haha, it would end up in being a mess. I liked that you talked to us as if we sat right next to you. The reality of you and your videos is really calming. I don't know if this comment made sense, but I just want you to know that you are awesome and inspiring and that you should do whatever you want and don't feel the pressure from the outside world. You are perfect just the way you are! Can't wait to climb again!

I always wanna give Jenn advice and tell her not to worry what people think so much... but I also think it's the fact that she considers how her videos might impact her viewers that make her so down to earth, so I never say anything... it shows she has a level of empathy for her audience most youtubers seem to lack. And if you're reading this Jenn, the little bit at the end was the best part - it was like catching up with an old friend :)

Hi Jen, try not to worry about if your sets are good or not! If you enjoy climbing the route, then I'd say it's good, if not good enough. Everyone starts somewhere. I mean... I set routes commercially, but I felt insecure about a lot of my stuff for the first 3 or so months. Even my amazing head setter said he was the same! Oh, and if it helps any with your setting, a few setting procedures are hands-only then add in feet to adjust difficulty, putting a single feature hold on the wall, and then setting around that (usually the crux), or thinking of a theme for the route (heel hooks, crimpy holds, dynamic, etc...). Also, here's some technical and general safety advice below, if that's okay! (1) Always be sure to have eye protection or look away from the bolt-holes/T-nuts when blowing debris out or resetting the wall. Metal shrapnel occasionally flies out and may get in your eyes. Look into a T-nut tap as well for "fixing" messed up T-nuts if you're worried about that. (2) I would recommend not tightening holds too tight because it may crack the holds (especially smaller ones). (3) If you'd like to continue using the large, purple hold without worries, I highly recommend you buy a countersink bit or make your own with two different drill bits! This is what you call "set-screwing" a hold so that it does not spin. :) Do not just put a screw in without the countersink made first, though. You may notice some holds already have a countersink for you (looks like a little dimple). Just make sure that when you put the screw in, that the head sits flush with the hold, but it does not go all the way through the hold; "just enough" is fine. (I have gotten a screw stuck in the wall before. Oops...) When removing the hold, always remove the set screw first, then the bolt. For "screw-on" holds (holds that are not bolt-on), you can always just put the partially removed screw against the head of a bolt as you drill it outwards. (4) One thing I like to do is to get the bolt or screw a hold in just enough so that I can adjust the angle of the hold to my preference while grabbing it and miming the move I want. I then go all the way in. A good rule of thumb for difficulty is to see if adjusting the hold 10-15 degrees makes it too hard. I try to aim for that so that the hold doesn't feel "wrong" when I grab it. Flow is nice.~ Anyways, I hope that wasn't too unsolicited. Have fun, and stay safe. :)

Don't worry about posting vids of yourself on your own wall, loads of other people are doing it, plus it's good entertainment for us that haven't. It's the social aspect of climbing I miss, and does feel like you're talking to us. As for the setting stick at it it'll begin to make sense, for the big hold usually they have a locating screw hole, to stop it spinning, if not you can put screw next to the bottom and top edges to stop them spinning. Keep at it.

Jenn! If you want to use that problem hold but think it will spin, you can add a screw right under the hold on the side you think it will spin on. Not sure if that is the right way to do things but it worked for us. That's what we did until we got our Moonboard holds. I thought this was a really fun video btw!! Great video! Keep em coming! I'm sure all your fans enjoy your videos whether you're climbing in a gym, on a rock, or on your home wall. I also built my own home wall, and am a beginner climber. I just got into it last summer only for COVID-19 to mess with my new hobby. Like many of us who's gyms closed, I just had to build the home wall to keep things going, but as a newbie, it's awesome to see how others set their own walls, learn any tips and tricks, and see how they deal with issues that I'll likely run into. Stay safe and stay awesome!

Watching from Germany here. Luckily the gyms in my area reopened last week as long as they keep to some strict regulations. I hadn't taken a break from bouldering for more than a week in the past 3-4 years; I felt it was getting more and more difficult to remember the passion I put into climbing before the quarantine. Took only one session to come back though. As for your wall, I think you are grossly undervaluing your own work, especially for a first time setter ;) The green start looks like a really fun start to figure out with like a drop knee or so. I think I like the orange one best, you're using all that wall space pretty nicely. Ever thought of adding a few sit starts? Could make up for the lower height compared to a gym wall...

I was about to say that you should trying yelling like Ondra but.... 4:02. Anyway, thanks for the post! Please don't think that people will resent your wall! Speaking for myself, it's great that you're able to have that and it's great fun to watch you explore it. I'm doing things to stay fit but don't have a wall to climb but my feeling about you and your wall is admiration, not envy!

As a European, we've been lifting many restrictions lately, so many people have begun resorting to climbing rock outdoors (gyms might reopen soon tbh, but for the moment, not just yet). That being said, I discovered that a publicly accessible and open outdoor artificial boulder (large, 4m tall 2-mushrooms-connected-with-an-overhang concrete thing with hundreds of holds) in a local sports park which is in fact operational and fully accessible, and since my climbing career is still in the "I need to loose another 5kg gah" phase, perfect for the next couple of summer months hehe (actually it's quite a large structure, and usually populated by experienced climbers, so theoreticaly I could develop on it for many years, it's actually that good). We'll see how the situation develops though, would suck if gyms stayed close for the entirety of upcoming winter as it would be nice to initiate some sort of self-measurement (grades). Also heating.. PS: your speech about being lonely definitely hit a spot lol, personally I'm what you'd call a hidden introvert (appear sociable, but actually bother with socializing very rarely) but even I have to admit to missing some serious social contact by now. Hang in there! xD

Great video! Loved the climbing and the end discussion! I just started a remote chemistry project, luckily we can use computational software to do stuff. Doing that and taking part in research meetings is definitely super helpful

I haven't been able to climb much, but I was fortunate enough to find a project in the hills behind my neighbor hood. I also will be going to joshua trees in a few days. Glad that youve made your own wall, which im sure will be beneficial after quarantine as well

i think so! i'm currently living with some folks who are more at-risk, so i think even after the climbing gyms open up, i might have to stick to the home wall for a little while longer. hope you have a fun and safe time in joshua tree!

Haven't finished the video yet but so far I see you're setting with different colours for different problems, boards like this are generally splash walls so don't restrict yourself to staying to one colour and make stuff up using everything as it is.

also it’s a great idea to watch climbing videos to get route ideas :) there are instagrams for this if you look up “route setter” on there. when i set at my gym I do this & draw out ideas & certain holds i want to use. i think about how i want to position the hold & what moves i want to force the climber to make :)

i can't speak for everyone but don't feel bad about posting videos on the home wall. As someone without a home wall, I love to see videos of others being able to climb bc it gives me entertainment and a bit of a climbing fix lol. Thankfully I got to climb and film outdoors the other day which felt amazing. btw the wall looks great. keep it up!

Was that a Calcifer cushion you were making?! Omg! I found setting my home wall really difficult. I went for a symmetrical set rather than setting specific problems, then I use an app called Boulder Challenge to set problems on there :) It's really nice seeing other peoples home walls, I'd love to see more videos of you on yours!

Also I would love to watch other videos on other topics that you enjoy like sure I like climbing and thats how I found you but I also like bass and crafts.
