It's really helpful to see ''normal'' people (as opposed to all the pros with giant channels) doing stuff like this. I started climbing about 9 months ago and I did my first V7 last week after finally accepting to spend multiple sessions on a problem. It's really important to sleep on those moves you ''can't'' do and try to figure out slightly different ways to do them. This video is a good example of how this happens, the work involved instead of just the final send. People need to know what that looks like!
@JenniferLangen4 жыл бұрын
thanks so much! i feel like i'm definitely out here representing the average climber :~) pros with giant channels are awesome, but i'm glad that people resonate with the videos i edit! thanks for the encouragement and support!!! :D

something i didn't really mention in the video was that in my final few tries, i was really thinking about MAKING the holds feel more positive by shifting my body weight around. this includes wrapping my hands around the slopers a bit more, and hiking my right hand into an undercling. hope this kinda makes sense! also, the ~quality~ of the individual clips varies a lot because i was filming almost everything on my iphone (hard to remember to bring my nice camera to the gym every time i want to climb!) hope y'all enjoyed and hope you're all having a wonderful, relaxing holiday :~)

you build motor memory while you are sleeping, so when you’re on the cusp of getting something, that’s a really good time to stop for the day and come back the next. i learned this lesson the hard way back when i did ballet, but figured out it applied to music & tons of other tasks as well. that feeling of “wow this was impossible yesterday but is so natural today?!” is real.
@JenniferLangen4 жыл бұрын
i think that's a really good point! there's a lot of memory consolidation that happens overnight. it's so cool! sometimes it's really worth it to sleep on a problem :~)

I love watching all your uploads. I have been trying to do a v4 for a while, and I just gave up too soon thinking that I will only go as far as a v3, however I really appreciate how you put up your trying videos that only gives me more inspiration to keep at it. During your try 9 part when you say how we sometimes keep trying the same beta when it doesn't work each time ....that happens to me as well. Theres always a simpler approach to a problem if we are stuck at it from one perspective right? Your determination to keep progressing with this problem is very contagious :D :D thank you for sharing it !! you are amazing :)

love this one. there's few moments more inspiring than feeling the progress. and routes that give you this feeling are so rare, at least at my gym for my level. Hi Jenn, congrats on your project and perseverance. I love your videos, your editing and musical choices are so on point that I never ever skip or fast forward any of them like I do on a lot of bouldering vlog. Anyway, I was wondering how much do you think you learn about climbing when editing your own videos ? Do you, sometimes watch yourself and tell "how did I miss this toe hook" or something similar ? I was really considering filming myself in order to improve my technique but I always feel like it would be weird especially in my not so large gym. Keep doing what you're doing ! Greetings from France.
@JenniferLangen4 жыл бұрын
hey! ahh, thank you so much, that means a lot to me! i definitely try to edit my videos so that they aren't ever boring. it's interesting that you bring that up actually, because i think i learn a lot from watching myself climb! one of the things i really recommend to people is to record themselves on their phones or a small camera when they're having trouble on a problem at the gym. even if you never post these videos, i think it's a good way to critique your body position and see if you can make any micro-adjustments. i think it's a really good idea, and if you just balance your phone on your chalk bag, it looks inconspicuous enough that i don't think people would mind that you're filming!
@JenniferLangen4 жыл бұрын
another reason i wish i had filmed myself more in the beginning is because filming yourself is a great way to document your progress as you get better. we don't always feel like we're improving, but when i watch videos from one year ago, i can totally see a difference in my technique and the way i climb, which is really inspiring. i really recommend it!

This in all the gyms i ve been so far in 3 European countries would have been between V2 and V3. From your videos i think we are at the same level but i can barely do v3 and you do v5? Is it something i am missing? Is it just grading difference? Why am i stuck at v3 even if i feel i am getting much better/stronger?
@jan53614 жыл бұрын
Everything looks much easier on film than it actually is.. that being said there are differences in grading in different gyms. Overall as long as you are getting better you will move up grades; just keep pushing!
@JenniferLangen4 жыл бұрын
i agree with jan, it's very difficult to compare grades between indoor gyms (even within gyms!) there are some gyms in california even that i visit where this problem might have been considered around a V3, because they like to grade their climbs closer to the conventions of outdoor grading. for me personally, i care less about the grade that i climb, and care more about whether or not i'm progressing in the grades that are established within my own gym. also, many climbers plateau at around V3 outside (which is around what i climb, and perhaps what i'd climb in your gym). i would recommend switching up your training a little bit and climbing routes that you don't normally climb on! maybe film yourself as well to see whether or not there are any adjustments you can do on problems that are giving you difficulty. i wish you the best!!
