What I find amazing about farming, and other business, is the way things were done 50 years ago was mocked for newer technologies and practices. Then after a period of time new methods get discovered which are just the older practices that have been repackaged. Growing up on a dairy farm in Vermont in the mid to late 60's we always crimped our hay when it was mowed to help speed up the drying.

@@joeykuiperij4806yes sir. Can’t imagine how many tons of silage got tossed out the silo by hand on our farm. We also had small wagons that were unloaded from the rear and we had to stand at the back and rake the silage out on a short chain apron that fed the blower and that was belt driven. Took us a week of solid work to fill a 20 by 60 foot silo. Then do it again for the one that stood right next to it. Lot or work and good food and the neighbors helping out.

You need two more things for your silos - a safety harness, and a fireman’s pole so you can get down quicker and easier. Man, that’s a long way up there!!! (I couldn’t even look at my screen when you were way up there!! Heights totally freak me out 😂) I remember that wagon! You cleaned it off for a hay rack ride one night in October about 3 years ago.

Agree wholeheartedly with you. Eric is a young man today, but years ahead that youthful vigor isn’t quite what it was. (Believe me, I know. 😕). Farming is already a dangerous occupation. Farmers have to take extra precautions and 120 feet in the air has unquestionable risks.

When you get your unloader and winch installed, you could drop the unloader to the floor (or close to it) and put some tape or some kind of marker on the winch cable at that point so you know you're at the bottom.

I like the idea of reducing all problems into solvable chunks: "It's just four 30-foot silos"!
@jacobmuhlenkamp6772 ай бұрын
Highly recomend the services door being in the 2nd ring from the bottom. An auger for the unloader can be slid in directly off the bed of the pickup truck, and silo doesnt need to be completely empty

When I was a young lad, my dad had a John Deere sicklebar mower, a New Idea pull type crimper and a John Deere rake. When he upgraded to use a mo/co, he kept the mower for trimming and also the crimper. We chopped all our 1st & 3rd crop for the silo but baled the 2nd crop. I would cut the hay with the mo/co one morning and then that afternoon, I'd hit it again with the crimper. That hay was very green, but very dry the next day. It made great hay bales.

The new silo is amazing. Upgrading to the steel feed pipe will pay for itself in time. A wise choice. Thanks for the view from the top. Also thanks for the lesson on why you chose the size silo that you did.v How much feed will fit in the silo compared to one bunker. When you get older you can teach your son to climb lol. Great videos Eric, they show how much knowledge and hard work is required even with today's automation. I guess they must have improved blower performance since the 1970s when we filled a 20 X 80 Harvestore silo, no way our 1970's blower gone another 50 feet.

Door on the other side for access to replace parts. Those things NEVER need parts when they are at the bottom - they only break about halfway up. That is a very impressive structure. Do you know what the total concrete yardage was ? I was worried about the climb, I have climbed a lot of communication towers but once I saw the safety cage and the rest points I guess it is no different. I would consider a body harness and a safety belt though. I had a girlfriend that worked in Fire Lookout Towers one day on the way up she started to feel faint and blacked out. Her harness and radio saved her life as when she came to she was upside down and could not right herself.

Your young, healthy & strong. Having said that you could get a cramp, have a grip slip etc. etc.. Thats a big hole to fill with feed. It will serve you well. The only issue i noticed is it looks like the nuilders positioned one of the legs for the hexapod right in the roof access hole. Maybe i was seeing it wrong. That could hinder access, especially if you ever have to relpace an auger at a time when the silo isnt empty and it has to go up over the top to get in. There will eventually be a time when youll have a mojor breakdown when the silo isn't empty. I cut a hole in a steel chute and stood on the feedroom roof the get an auger out and back in when the silo was 15 feet from bei g empty once. But there's no cutting holes in your cement chute. Excited to follow along and see the project progress.

Just remember - if the climb gets tougher as you get older you may want to put a pulley on top and hang counter weights outside the chute or the cage. Latch the cable to your harness when climbing and hook it when you get to the needed height and /or when you get to the bottom. Add second connector to latch off before releasing from your harness. (something to keep in mind).I heard some have done it and as you get older (and bigger) you may need to do it later.
