Are you supposed to wear a down jacket on the outside of your shell? I feel like that looses insulative properties?
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston 8 күн бұрын
Great question! Yes, it is done this way and is actually really warm. You can of course wear a thinner down jacket as a midlayer. But the big puffys can't physically fit underneath a hardshell. The big puffy is often used during breaks and on the summit as a reinforcement layer. It is often too warm to wear when you are moving. On higher summits like the 8000 meter ones you will see people wearing full body down suits :)

@ so was this a mistake you made when purchasing your layers. Should I make sure my down jacket can fit before the shell

I am not sure I understand your question :) No mistakes were made here. Climbers often use two different down jackets. A thinner one as a midlayer under the hardshell and a big puffy to go on top of everything as a reinforcement layer when standing still. It is two different pieces of clothing. Wearing a down jacket as a midlayer can be very warm though and is only used for cold conditions. I often just wear a fleece or a synthetic (primaloft) midlayer or even just a softshell jacket if it is really warm.

Fantastic drone shots, pictures, and great climbing footage and all around excellent description of the conditions to climb Pico de Orizaba! What organization did you use to climb Orizaba?

Thanks David! I used www.summitorizaba.com/ and was very pleased. I would give some advice. I stranded in the Puebla bus station and had to take a cab two hours to get to Tlachichuca. So check the schedule. And if you have experience with mountaineering then ask for a fit guide who can match your pace :)

a good movie. Do you think it is possible to complete this route solo? whether there were any technical difficulties

Thank you! I wouldn't advice going alone unless you are an experienced mountaineer. The glacier is steep and there is always a risk of falling in a crevasse.

Thank you so much. Really happy you liked it. There are just so many hyped up people on KZbin, and that's not me. So I am a little nervous about that. Will my videos do well without the hyper positive personality etc. Your comment made my day :)

Great Vid Ras. I climbed Pico with Larry - in early Jan last year and there was a lot more snow than it looked in your climb. That refuge hut was one of the noisiest I've been in for sure!

Thanks Jeremy! It was all bone dry when I was there in February. I have never been so dusty as when we got back haha. But yeah, the hut doesn't deserve 3 stars after that night haha. Had maybe 2-3 hours of bad sleep. I think it is worse than the hut on Rainier!

Remember climbing this back in the 80s, nothing technical but the acclimatisation was brutal with some members of the team suffering with mountain sickness, glad to get back down after we’d done it. Amazing being oboe the clouds though

It does seem to be a mountain that people underestimate in terms of acclimatization! Higher than Everest Base Camp :) The view is great for sure. I particularly enjoyed looking down the crater!
