Genuinely- you guys are producing the best trad climbing content on KZbin right now! Really inspiring. Love the psyche, the chat and the little nugs of gold - like the close ups of crux holds and gear placements etc. Then just the beautifully shot and edited wilds of Scotland. Would love to see some onsight battles too... Keep up the amazing work!

Yes, that gabbro rock on Skye is young at only 50 million years old. Dinosaurs were extinct by then, and simians had already diverged from the other primates.

I love your videos and enjoy your sense of humor immensely! It is a discovery for me that the weather in Scotland is the same as in Kansas, wait for 5 minutes and it will change. However, you are blessed with rock formations that we don't have. What a geological inequality!

@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah rope solo on lead is pretty intense. I’ve done a small bit whilst new routing in big walls, but that’s about it. Lots of folk asking for the TR solo vid so I’ll have to do that :)
@lewisdocherty75253 жыл бұрын
There are routes on that Coruisk hut wall in sure! As you didn't have the book, are you sure there is not a route on that line you where scouting out? Can see on ukc there is routes on that wall. Don't have the SMC Cuillin guide book on me to double check. Great content from you guys., keep up the good work!
@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
Yo Lewis. Yeah I knew there were routes there already, but I was pretty darn sure nobody did the one I threw a rope down. For one, it was pretty hard, two, the gear placements needed a weeclean with a nut tool, and three, the holds were also a bit flakey and looked like nobody had ever climbed on it before. But yeah, Charlie Woodburn did an e5 on the right wall, the crack right of my line is an E1 I think? There’s possibly some others as well

Great send and video, thanks for sharing this journey. I was just thinking if you can mabye make a video about the "modern trad" culture - top roping, gear fiddling, onsighting, mabye even few words about pegging and bolting, mixed trad (partially bolted /pegged routes), ethics of replacing old pegs (never heard a single word about it). These are some big themes /questions I have and it would be interesting to hear your opinion and thoughts on that.

I disagree about the difficulty of access. I spent three nights at Loch Coruisk some years ago with a friend. We carried everything over the Cuillin Ridge from Glen Brittle and then walked out around the headland three days later and left nothing behind. A great trip.
@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
Did you see all the gear we had? 🤣 It would be pretty flippin’ hard to drag all that over the Cuillin. I was happy we took the boat 🛥
@iplanes13 жыл бұрын
@@RobbiePhillips I would actually agree. We took a rope, harnesses and a few runners but we were only climbing severes and the like - my taste in climbing in those days was lots of exposure but also big holds and plenty of places to rest. We may well have taken the boat but I did not know it existed - it may not have done in those days. We also beat the world record for tramping back to Glen Brittle around the headland so that we could get to the Sligachan for a celebratory Talisker.
@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
I think the boat has been around for a while… there’s three generations of the family working it. The grandfather started it, and the son now works it, and the grandchildren help out too. Good effort on that world record 🤣🏅🥃 sounds like it was well worth it!

Didn't that new wall also have a few nice lines going up the arete and on the right side of the arete?
@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Just right if the E8 I was trying is another face with a dyno move that might be E8/9. Right again is an arete with no features at the start, but if you climb in from the right traversing along the face it would be a bold E7 I think 🤔 thats just scratching the surface of what’s around there!!!! Can’t wait to go back 😝

Why does robbie lead with two ropes attached to him? something to do with gear redundancy?
@jasperray65763 жыл бұрын
One reason for it is to reduce drag when placing gear so you don't have to extend each piece to allow a striaghtish line up the climb
@simonkemp1563 жыл бұрын
It's an essential trad skill. Try leading a route that meanders left and right with a single rope...

Really not keen on painting the holds with chalk, and not so very long ago this would have been seen as completely unacceptable... fantastic spot, now with a chalk ladder painted up the cliff.
@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
Well… not anymore… it rained the day after we did it 😂 Would you suggest not using chalk instead?
@RobbiePhillips3 жыл бұрын
Also, what do you mean it wouldn’t be acceptable? I’m pretty sure chalk has been used and accepted in the U.K. since pretty early on… I did hear there was a small outcry, but it didn’t last long in the U.K. tell me if I’m wrong, I’d be really interested if there’s an underground scene of chalk-less climbers in the U.K. quietly repeating all the hardest boldest trad climbs without chalk 😎
