Climbing The French Route | Huayna Potosi | Bolivia

Huayna Potosi's French Route, or Via de Los Franceses, follows a direct line up the mountain's eastern face. When my guide, David, and I attempted this route in August of 2021, it had yet to be opened for the season. It took us six hours of climbing in unconsolidated snow, but we eventually reached the ridge extending out from Huyana Potosi's northernmost summit. From there, we traversed to the central summit before descending back to high camp on the normal route. We were lucky that weather stayed very good for the entire climb, allowing us to move safely up the powdery snow.
