While you're right that the kind of clay doesn't matter too much, there is one consideration you need to make. Steer clear of clay containing sulfur, as the sulfur will prevent the silicone from curing properly, ruining both your model and your mold. Great video as always!

Hi Bob. I'm into indoor climbing myself, and I'm told that clear resin holds brake right in your hands in a way that makes extremely sharp pieces, pretty much like obsidian knifes! Apparently the solution is to use powders into the mix, and that's one of the reasons profesional holds are always color. The powders helps to keep the hold together. Anyway, that's what I was told, but seems to me something easy to try. May be you can try to broke one hold and see hoy it brakes, and if the result is secure. As always, awesome work!

Cool tutorial! Thanks for posting! FYI - those 'runnels' on the surface are caused by the epoxy getting a bit to hot in that dimension. Adding some filler may help reduce those, as would using a urethane mass casting resin. :)

I made a bunch of those a couple of years ago. I suggest using foam instead of clay to get a nice and even texture. Also it's a good idea to put a washer into the final mold before you pour, this disperses the forces when you bolt it onto the wall and makes the hold much more durable. Most imporantly, put some poly fibers into the mixture before you pour it. I've seen holds break and shatter that didn't have this reenforcement.

Hi Bob, Tip: If i have the problem you ran into making a mold, that you didn't make enough silicone, i always stick a piece of wood or something else into the silicone to raise the surface level (in a corner or somewhere) works great! I like your videos!

Regarding proper silicones to use for molding block molds (the kind you did in this video) I suggest using 1065 Burmans Silicone. It’s 1 base to 10% catalyst. It holds up for years and captures every detail. A little more pricey but worth the quality. The cure time is roughly 12 hours depending on the environment but you will have enough time to evacuate (de-gas) the product. I also suggest doing a “high pour” when pouring your silicone to avoid air bubbles. Hope this helps!

Bob, I have a friend that was stick welding while wearing his wedding band and accidentally touched the stinger to the top of his ring while the underside was sitting on the welding table. It was glowing red hot instantly. He had to run to the sink and cool it before he could clip it off. Just another good reason for QALO.

Nice hold! A couple of tips for next time you make one of these: Someone said to carve foam rather than clay for more evenness in texture. Foam is great and delicate and not all foam is the same. I never used clay on smaller holds, just larger hollow-back holds. If you do go with foam, make sure to carefully glue down the finished form to an even flat piece of cardboard so the silicone doesn't get under the mold and float the foam piece. Foam can be really unforgiving, but so can clay. You could use a more malleable wall-material to help save on silicone use. I've used metal air-duct tape, doubling up pieces to build up the wall, then folding-in the tape so the thickness of the silicone is reduced to maybe a couple of centimeters around most of the hold. For this same reason, you will want to make sure to pour enough silicone so that you cover the form you're molding by a couple of centimeters, as well. Not too thick so the hold is impossible to pull, and not too thin you wreck your mold. You'll want to check to for dust, hairs, or string before you pour because they can cause tears in your silicone after it's set, so that when you're pouring urethane, you don't get major deformations in your hold you have to sand off later, or scrap the hold. Also, tears in the mold mean the silicone doesn't last as long because the stress of pulling the hold from mold will exacerbate any damage in the mold. One more thing, when setting your silicone mold, make sure it's placed on an even surface. You'll avoid a lot of sanding the hold to make-up the difference, which can diminish or eliminate entirely complete features of the hold.

if you are running out of silicon or mold material, you can just add pieces of wood or whatever you have handy on the outskirts of the mold where it won't touch the buck. this will raise the silicon level by filling in areas that don't matter.

For the wedding band, I think they are a good idea for anyone that has to use their hands a lot, not just those who work with tools. I know someone who had his finger ripped apart by his ring getting stuck in a volleyball net while playing a competitive match. The finger was ripped in such a weird way that they decided to not even try to place it back and thus that teacher now is missing a finger.

I bought the Qalo ring for the exact same reason. Almost lost a finger with a class ring once. Also, be careful when mixing clays and silicones when making molds. I believe air dry clays have sulfur in them which can inhibit curing in certain types of silicones. I think it's the platinum cure silicones. There are sooooo many variations of silicones! Thanks for posting this! Great vid as always

Something I did in the past is mix sand into the epoxy before casting to lower costs (and also give the hold some texture). It comes out heavier, and you have to be careful not to add too much sand or else it would just fall apart, but sand is much cheaper than epoxy, so it could be a nice way to save some bucks if you're on a budget.
