As others have pointed out, this style of "Problem? Let's see what we can do to fix it!" videos are awesome. Question though: As a person with ADHD, and multiple projects, focuses, and issues, what is the amount of time you put into this? Is this something you hammered out in a day, or is this something that you bit off in chunks over multiple days? Knowing how long someone with full-time availability to focus on projects takes may make us without that availability feel less bad when we can't get things done as fast as it seems you get them done on KZbin.

When I first got into 3d printing and 3d modeling, one of the first things I did was to accurately 3d model my workspace room, then made a rough model of the furniture and larger Items, then I 3d printed everything and started moving things around the printed models to figure out how to assemble my workspace. Along with a figure that is scaled down to my size. Was a way better method of seeing how things fit together and interact with each other and me, by moving physical objects around, than just moving 3d models around on a screen, or some paper cutouts. Highly recommend trying this as one of your first 3d modeling / 3d printing projects, if you haven’t really tried either before.

Why to put a rail and use preset positions to get the camera wherever needed?

Using an Light sensor along with a motor will make it roll the paper perfectly and if you could ( I have no idea what kind your printer is or how it actually works but I am assuming just a normal printer with ability to print long sheets of paper) somehow use a sensor (hall sensor should work) that will connect to the motor telling it to start when you start printing and adjust speed, will allow you to set everything up when starting to print and roll it simultaneously. It's complicated but if it works, could be a great deal!!

I believe the overwhelming possibility of this design dropping an expensive camera on the floor would prevent the industry from investing in it.. Nice rail system with hand height access Bob bro..

Even if the "thing" you is making isn't a problem we all have, seeing the ideation, prototyping, and troubleshooting is extremely interesting to me. Thanks for bringing us along Bob! Although, when I eventually break down and get one of these cameras, I may have the exact same issue.

Metal fabricator here. Pipe is classified and named with its ID. Round tubing is named with its OD. So next time you need round metal and care more about the OD, get round tubing. There are other considerations like seam vs seamless and grade and stuff as well

Such a cool idea! I’m thinking of making a 4ft square mobile workbench for my table saw and thicknesser. This might work really well to have the thicknesser raise up from under the table saw outfeed part! Could be a great option for benchtop tool storage so you don’t need to lift them out from under a bench, or even have to clear off the top of your bench first!

Somebody hand this man a hacksaw and the frontend of an old bike. *edit* To clarify: the gable and breaks on a bike are perfect for this. Gable stabilizes the thing on the joist, breaks come with a handy 1m or so extension. You only need to add a locking mechanism (aka a ziptie).

Here is a concept you can design into the apparatus. Without regard to edge alignment, there is an easy method to make a roll that isn't wound tightly enough, more tightly wound. The method is this. After the paper is rolled up, continue to roll the roll of paper the same direction that you did when you first wound it up., except without any dowel or anything else in the center. while rolling the roll, gradually decrease the distance between the top and bottom of whatever you are using to continue to roll up the roll. As you roll the roll, the first innermost edge will roll just a little tighter with each rotation of the roll, and the gap between this first, and each subsequent roll, will continue to tighten as the gaps are rolled through each gap and eventually out, and off of the roll, tightening the whole roll with each rotation that you continue roll. Three, or four rollers could be used for this by placing the Roll in the center of all the rollers, and letting the rollers push on the roll from around the outside of the roll.

I like the idea of using a grabby hand toy as a possible solution, having it stay closed with a strong spring and a pull on the handle to release it. No idea if it would work but a fun possibility for those who don’t have a 3D printer available!

Are you building a catalog of 3D models to sell at some point or is there another way to gain access to this model specifically? I'd bet people that you have collaborated with in the past could use this as well for their content. Jimmy would find a way to make it all on the bandsaw, Evan & Katelyn would make of from resin, Joel would oversize it to hold a printer in mid-air. The thoughts are endless 🤣😂

Idea for the system: make a system on your joists similar to how an etch a sketch works (x and y axis). Then attach that with a couple motors and a computer. Then program areas where you routinely mount your camera. Then have buttons that you can press to have the mount move to those predestinated locations. You could also have a manual mode that allows you to move it to locations as required.

I think all the final bit needed is some sort of stop so you don't smash the spring each time. Perhaps just a 3d printed piece that you glue in a magnet that sits on top of the bolt.

Bob, i listen to your podcast with Jimmy and David, i know its a theopy session for you and from my perspective you're wrestling with finding purpose on KZbin and the stuff you make. With that being said i know your branding is "problom solver" and theres a reason for that, you are amazing at it. Let me tell you the second video of your camera stand was awesome to watch, even though i don't even own a film camera, becasue you are in the pursuit of perfection of funtion. All that to give you a recommendation to tear into old projects and make them that 10% better. That would be so inperational to makers that just cant figure out why thier projects are not quite right. No they dont have to be making the same exact thing as you but a funtion can have purpose on multiple things. You have a great problem solving brain and the last bit that turns something good to great , i think, is your niche

You seem to be in a season of efficiency. Finding things that annoy you just a little bit, or could be just a little better and finding solutions for it. It's so cool to see these little projects that can help so many people in so many ways. It's a big change from major projects that garage woodworkers will spend weeks on, and I love it.

I watched this whole thing… and while it works I didn’t want to be negative cuz you have a ton of projects I want, but are over my head. But I kept thinking “what about something like the grabber but with a locking handle” so you use the handle to grab, lock it in, and when you want to remove it…. Release the lock

I was yelling a bit at my screen in the section about springs since all of the issues were easily fixable, but if it works it works, so no complaints here. For the problem of the roller height i would suggest making the holes on the sides slots, that way when the roll gets too large it can just get higher and make more space. For the guides you can also make the screw holes slots so that you can slide them to the sides when not needed. If you go that route I suggest making something to be able to screw the screws by hand, that way you can lock it and unlock it as you please.

Great video, Bob! As a career (non-mechanical) engineer, I love watching your videos and thought process each weekend to solve practical problems. It's one of the highlights of my week, every week. I appreciate your engineering mindset of breaking down the objectives, prototyping, trial and error, etc. I do this as well all the time. I also totally love the over-engineering you often do, because often times you think of things and methods that I never would. In this case, I'd probably just mount some small metal plates all over the ceiling and a strong magnet to the quick release plate or selfie stick. But what's the fun in that? LOL.

Yeah, I was thinking just mount a bunch or steel plates like electrical box covers wherever you may need the camera. Then make a base w the 1/4 20 bolt and magnets and boom. Its not infinitely attachable, but it is infinitely expandable and very simple

Why not use neodymium magnets instead? Would seem much simpler and more versatile way of solving your problem, esp if one doesn’t have exposed joists.
