I remember seeing this video as part of a Toonami block on Cartoon Network alongside some of Daft Punk's anime videos from the DISCOVERY album, and I distinctly remember those videos opening my mind wide open at the age of 10. Truly a formative moment in my life.

I grew up seeing the music videos on Toonami, but I only saw the full movie a few years at a (probably unlicensed) screening at an art museum. It's definitely worth a watch.

The latter, apparently. "Interstella 5555" is a 2003 anime film made by anime legend Leiji Matsumoto in direct cooperation with the two members of Daft Punk, who also funded the whole thing. You can find the entire movie on KZbin in pieces, but I still recommend watching it in proper movie form. It's genuinely good, and it has one of the greatest anime soundtracks of all time!

Strobelite was sort of a weird spin off video, the characters are 2D again in the rest of the recent videos. Also, not mentioning Studio Killers in the lineup of successful "fictional bands" is a crime.

The only thing I would change about Del's design in this is the lips - technically it does count as a throwback to animations from the start of the industry, but the minstrel element could stand to stay back in that era. Otherwise, he's one of the most fluidly animated creations I've seen (see also: Jump The Gut) Did you guys manage to see the 2D-animated Humility or Tranz? Those are the music videos that came out after the Noodle-catsuit-nightclub incident, and Murdoc has been replaced with a suspiciously similar green counterpart...

i think the use of all the CGI in the later gorillaz music is supposed to reflect the band's made-up cannon. like, in the backstory of the band, they sorta drift further and further apart and switch members around and stuff (you'd have to read the books and all the other media they put out to follow that all). i think the weirdness and disconnect from the earlier videos is meant to sort of be a statement on the band becoming more mainstream and homogenized, or like a statement on how a weird, unique sound slowly becomes more and more pop

Yeah, most people state side only known them as Simon & Milo and because of their contribution to Get A Clue. I remember going into a record store and finding the vinyl single for Sucks To Be You and wondering why Simon and Milo were on the sleeve cover for some band called Prozzak lol. That being said, I think their third album is HIGHLY underrated and feels like a solid attempt to be taken seriously, rather than a novelty. Just Friends is a great pop tune.

Definitely agree with y'all with how weird Strobelight was, but people ought to look at some of the more recent 3d animation they did with G-Shock. It's a lot more stylized, and the entire thing is CG, rather than some funky dolls dancing in the real human world

25 years? For the really well initiated it’s coming up on 19 years. For the casual observer, 18 years since the debut album dropped. So disappointing Gorillaz morphed into Humanz and then The Now Now. Peak Damon Albarn ends in 2006.
