People were actually free back then. The internet and mobile phones happened when I was mid twenties. The time before was so so much better. I pity the new generation and any subsequent digital slaves. Things like being able to watch this don't make up for it either. Actually going to a record shop and buying the disk was obviously a more meaningful experience.

I first saw these guys in the early 80’s at a free gig at Dulwich/Brockwell park, and was so impressed I bought (and still own) the vinyl-they put me onto Black Uhuru, Stram Dancer, Blue Mink, and most importantly Toots and the Maytals, whom I have travelled thousands of miles to see-I always loved Ska, but it took CE&GS for me realize what I really loved!.,

Back in the day, I used to run a touring PA hire company, And this act was one of my accounts, They never did massive gigs, it was places like dingwalls and the like, I think we did about 12 gigs in a couple of months, fortunatly I was able to get the confidence of thier management and the band and became thier sound engineer for all those gigs, also bringing in a little bit od dub effects in a few songs. The band were very cool and knew thier stuff, but arriving on time and being fit to play was another thing, So all the technical had to be done by my own crew, all the setting up, sound checking etc, so that the band just walked on and did it, which they certaily did to an always packed audience. As a white guy,, being around these type of acts is not easy, as an understanding of culture and the expected output was under suspition, however after two gigs and kicking off so called sound engineers they bought along because they made a mess of it, I was very much made part of the scene with the band, and got the ultimate support from thier manager to do things the way I wanted to, which I'm sure was what they wanted as well, Good sounds and balance on stage, and a terrific dominat bass line out front, with sharp snare drums and tight kick drums, and sizzleing Hihats. I think it must have been around 1983 or 1984 from memory.
