black bird - Being a " gunman", or hired killer , is like being an athlete . You have to constantly hone your skills . You can`t be out of the game for 10 years and then jump right back at it . It would be impossible for a reformed gun fighter who had been out of action for 10 years or so , to come out of retirement , and kill all his opponents in the saloon , as William Munney did . Was he mentally tougher than his opponents? Yes , but it wouldn`t have been enough . ( Compare Unforgiven to The Outlaw Josey Wales . That character was in action for years . He wasn`t retired , He wasn`t reformed . He was believable , even when he did unbelievable things . )

Everyone will have an opinion about their favorite Western and there are certainly some very good ones. Over my long life I’ve seen my share of them and I feel that ‘Unforgiven’ is one of the best. When I was a young boy and before any Clint Eastwood movies, two Westerns that made a huge impression on me were ‘High Noon’ and ‘Shane’. These are two classic Westerns that have stood up well to the test of time. If you haven’t seen them you should and if you have seen them, why not watch them again. “Shane, come back”. “Come back Shane”. The little boy calls to his hero to come back.
@EthelredHardrede-nz8yv4 жыл бұрын
@@Brace67 "Westerns that made a huge impression on me were ‘High Noon’ and ‘Shane’. " Pale Rider is better than Shane. If nothing else Clint did not wear that ridiculous outfit that shorty wore. Not that Shane is bad, just that Alan Lad as the lead was a silly choice, even barring those clothes. High Noon does not have those problems. Its great. Its even a bit better than High Noon on a Moon AKA, Outland. Ethelred Hardrede
@Brace674 жыл бұрын
Just recently watched the movie again and really enjoyed the experience. The character played by Richard Harris is called ‘English Bob’ not ‘British Bob’ as Eastwood states in this interview. Gene Hackman’s character ‘Little Bill Dagget’ has a sadistic streak in him and displays it in his beating of English Bob, and William Munny and his eventual beating and killing of Morgan Freeman’s character. He believed he was not doing anything wrong in his treatment of “assassins’ and those men of that type. English Bob got the special treatment from Little Bill, not so much as for violating the no guns in town ordinance as for Bill’s low distain of Bob’s character and the reason that brought him to ‘Big Whisky’.

Little Bill was not a one dimensional villain, and William Munny was not a one dimensional hero...but the villain-hero dynamic was still very much a part of the film. The great thing about Unforgiven is played out in the eyes of the writer character, in my opinion. It starts out with the writer hero worshiping who he thought was a heroic gun slinger, English Bob. Then later a much more authentic version of a gunslinger, Little Bill... and finally the real thing, someone so evil his actions washed away all illusion of hero worship and fantasy, Mummy. Little Bill is a great, complex character. Not evil, but does some evil things which he believes necessary, like whipping Ned. He also solves problems somewhat Solomon-like, such as the civil compromise early in the film, where he fines the cowboys on Skinny's behalf. The scenes with English Bob were fantastic. He even self-promotes a little to Beauchamp while tearing down English Bob. He is very human, which makes him so engaging. He ended up in Big Whiskey because he wanted a better pace of life after working the tough towns. He tries to keep order but sometimes (frequently?) uses questionable methods. No one could have portrayed him as well as Hackman
@kenp3L4 жыл бұрын
Little Bill's downfall was saying to justice-seeking Strawberry Alice, "Haven't you seen enough blood for one night?" That, and the fact that he allowed the enterprising Alice to organize and advertise for a contract murder right under his eyes, lead to Little Bill being shot to death on the floor of a saloon an instant after a vengeful rifleman advises Bill that "deserve's got nothing to do with it."

Loyalty, dedication, decency, equity, compassion, empathy, selflessness, bravery, honor, shameful, regretful. Reading through the comments I'd swear people saw a different version. The only one that comes close to having the level of "good" qualities that Will Munney had was the victim and the little cowboys. Little Bill was the total opposite of "good". Disloyal, selfish, mean, heartless, honorless, cowardice, authoritarian, sexist, violent, cruel, murderous. Little Bill was the ultimate bad guy. His so called "justice" was cruel. Will's "justice" was objective and pure with a sprinkle of compassion for the Cowboys. The kid and the writer glorified violence. The writer never learned this error. The kid, the "bad guy", did learn, the hard way. Delilah was angry about her life of patriarchy and was blinded by her anger. Ned's loyalty went only so far, with his wife and with Will. English Bob was a pompous fraud. Yes. The former outlaw turned devoted husband was the hero. The lifelong lawman was the bad guy.

Superb flick. I had a couple of very minor issues that I can't help but notice whenever I see it. Will, Ned and the Kid (can't recall his actual character name) camp for the evening on the way up to Big Whiskey. All three have exactly the same blankets; brand new, sort of OD green blankets. Someone charged with costumes or matching the times (whatever it's called) should have caught that one. The other thing (this one really bugs me) is when Will had just killed 5 men and had is brief chat with WW Beauchamp, he loads up and leaves. All the while, there are 5 dead men there; all of which will have some cash on them. Little Bill and his dead three deputies all have guns of one kind or another which should have been grabbed, loaded and made ready for his journey south. And lastly, there is a now empty bar there. Instead of helping himself to a couple drinks, he should have grabbed a bottle or two for the journey and gone after the till which likely had as much as $50.00 in it; an awesome haul for the times. He also should have grabbed a couple horses since the deputies and Little Bill no longer had a use for them...lots of value there as well.

Up there with the Shawshank Redemption in terms of superior movies. Funny Morgan Freeman is in both.
