@@artesran One of my favorite Hackman stories is from Dennis Hopper about Hoosiers. It was one of those scripts that he did not read, and he bitched and moaned the entire time about the first-time director David Anspaugh (who later directed Rudy). There is a scene midway through the film, during a game, in which he and Hopper are laughing on the bench. According to Hopper, that wasn't in the script. As they were shooting the scene, Hackman turned to Hopper and said, "We will never get another role after being in this piece of shit." However, Hopper added that when Hackman saw the finished product, he called Anspaugh and said, "How the hell did you manage to make that movie from the mess you shot?" and ended up being proud of his work on the film.

Hackman initially did not want this part, as he was tired of being in violent films, but was convinced by Eastwood that the tale would make a statement against violence. The final film is somewhat of two minds on that, but it's emotionally powerful with brilliant performances, including a great one by Saul Rubinek.

I dont think its of two minds on the topic at all. Everyone loses. Violence costs everyone everything utterly and completely. Its costs everyone their lives except for William Munny. Munny's price is far far higher. It costs Munny his soul and his redemption. Munny is the Unforgiven.

Gene Hackman's this kind of actor: When responding to some prodding, egotistical director he once stated, "All I need from you is how how fast or how slow.." So, yeah...he knows the essence of what makes a character, and the writing is the meat and potatoes of any theatrical endeavor.

When the film was done being edited Clint had David Peeples in for a viewing. He thought other people would be there. It was just him and Clint. When the movie was done he was crying. Clint hadn't changed a word of what he'd written. That's so rare.
@Ruylopez778
@Ruylopez778 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you know already, but I heard that Clint said every time he tried to change something he just made it worse (so he had the humility and insight to make the best creative choices instead of trying to force his ideas onto the script for the sake of it). I also heard that his former screenwriting partner discouraged him from reading the script, and when Clint did read it, he wanted to keep it until he was old enough to play the part. I may be wrong, but I heard that Clint likes to be economical and get most scenes done with as few takes as possible, and has shot some of his movies in sequence. I feel like Eastwood's directing style is just to let the movie speak for itself and not overdo anything. Sometimes the economical, less is more, is the way to go.

Yes! I think of this all the time - he and Dianne Wiest absolutely nailed very very difficult roles, making the repressed Republican parents endearing and funny and loving. They could’ve easily come across as ‘villains’ in a film where their presence was the source of conflict. But instead many of us were lovingly reminded of our own parents again and again.

I saw him in banning marooned and under fire. He could've won for every one of those performances and I wouldn't hate him for eating crackers! When I go to a Hackman picture. I expect gravity. I expect brilliance. So far in 55 years (!) Eugene has never ever let me down! To a life well done. No wonder Dustin Hoffman says Gene is his best friend forever. I believe him!

+Λαυρέντιος Ψαροκάηκας Absolutely. A LOT of entertainment should take a lesson from him (and Meryl Streep--another WILDLY successful and gifted artist, but yet so modest, gracious, and kind). Class acts, those two (and there are actually a few others).
