Whether you like Bill Clinton or not, you've got to admit his debating skills are extremely impressive.

Nobody, but nobody could take a complex issue and bring it down to terms rural or small town Americans digest and never for one second, appear to be 'talking down' to them. He had a real knack for explaining in a few sentences what other politicians, pundits or academics could not. By the time he was done 'explaining' and then spiinning, a farmer, a housewife, a waitress and a college student were resting in the palm of his hand. There are parts of this country, where as a presidential candidate, the only democrat you'd want to send with your message, was Bill Clinton.

Brian Turner spot on...I'm an Arkansan & a democrat. Bill is a genuine guy despite his well documented flaws. He genuinely likes people & can relate to a broad spectrum of peeps. He wasn't an " Old South" type guy that puts on an act in public so as to seem inclusive & progressive to garner the Black vote, only to revert to their racist country club ways when the lights go out & the liquor is flowing like a lot of sleazy southern politicians do. He loves all peeps, especially women :-) IMO & speaking with my friends who are black I feel that a lot of black folks have the ablity to sense it when a politician etc is being genuine & really cares about their personal & collective interests.

The key thing to understand about this clip is that the question was about how the candidates had been affected by "the deficit". Bush, because he'd spent so little of his life with ordinary people, took that at face value and went into "ornery patrician" mode. Clinton, on the other hand, realised what she actually meant by "the deficit" was "the bad economy", and so answered that question instead, with his trademark empathy and rhetorical skill. That was pretty much the ballgame, right there, even if it had been a two horse race.

@@realUlfricStormcloak I mean Trump and the Republicans broadly are directly responsible for the corporate looting of the American people, so yea you can definitely assign blame pretty directly. For instance, really the only achievement of the Trump presidency was the trillion dollar tax cut for billionaires that was paid for by literally taking that money from the American people.

If that’s true - and I agree that it is - what does it say about Clinton’s 8 years in office? Didn’t he have nearly a decade to turn this around? Hell: what does it say about ANY American politician, who always run on the platform of “things suck: I’m gonna fix them.” After a while, you realize the record is skipping because there’s a *crack* in it.

@@spb7883 Well a president's role in policy and actual lawmaking is extremely small. Congress writes laws. But I take your point. The real issue is the actual structure of government. Mitch McConnell may be a soulless monster, but he's also intelligent and responding to the incentives created by the system within which he's acting. The republicans realize that greater voting power and democracy in general is a threat to their power. They've become entirely owned by the corporate powers that fund them. So they work to funnel money to the billionaires that own them, and enact dangerous policies to benefit them. And they work to decrease the effectiveness of democracy. Through defunding education, gerrymandering, stacking courts to favor anti-democratic suits, etc.
