Current taxonomy of the colubroides is a bit of a mess, but from what I have researched, there are at least 15 families, which is more than you presented in the video. Additionally there are 2 families you left out in this video completely, and those are Xenophidiidae (2 species of spinejaw snakes, both in the genus Xenophidion, which are endemic to Borneo and peninsular Malaysia) and Bolyeridae (contains 2 genera, each with 1 species. The type genus, Bolyeria, actually went extinct in the 1970s, with the other genus, Casarea, being vulnerable. Why is this family vulnerable to going extinct? Well, it is because they are endemic to Mauritius, and island species tend to be more prone to extinction than mainland species. So they will go the way the dodo!). Both of these families seem to be closely related to the boas, though there is some debate weather they actually belong to the Booidea superfamily. Speaking of Boids, the other booid families you mentioned in the video are currently classified as subfamilies in Boidae.

I once had a thread snake that I observed for a couple days before releasing it back into the wild. My wife thought it was an earthworm. It's eyes were underneath transparent scales. I would say that being a subterranean critter that survives by eating ant eggs and on occasion termites. I found it crossing a road on a rainy night. If I had continued to drive I probably would have run it over and I actually did not notice it while I was driving. The only reason why I noticed it was because I was in a squad car at the time and I was about to write a repeat offender a citation I suppose that little snake saved that person that night

Oo alligators got reclassified? I'll have to look them up, but not really shocking when one stops to think about it. Crocodilians predate the dinosaurs so lot of room for diversification there even if the body form converged again more recently.

I can’t express how much this video means to me. I’m autistic and my special interest is snakes so I love collecting information about them but I’ve been struggling to understand the taxonomy side of things. The only place I could find comprehensive information was in academic papers, but because I’ve never studied zoology I would usually end up completely lost. Once I found a blind snake in the carpet in my room, thought it was a worm at first. No idea how he got there. I names him Ol Worm and released him into the back yard. I took picture of course, and sent them to a herpetologist. They told me what kind snake it was and told me that owls will scoop them up and put them in their nests. They eat parasites, and owlets in a nest with a little blind snake buddy are much more likely to survive to adulthood! Nature is amazing :)

Great vid! I have a snake question I’ve been pondering: what happens if a snake eats a venomous snake? Let’s say a king snake like a Leonis would eat a Western Hognose. Would that cause harm?

@Zoo Tenance no I believe they are immune to other snakes venom so they would be fine. I have a California king snake so I did some research and everything says they would not be effected by another snakes venom.

So, here in Florida, when doing yard work, from time to time I find what I've always been told are glass snakes. They are highly delicate and even just moving them out of the way seems to kill them. They are very thin and short and look like a little string of mercury. They hang out in sandy areas and under decaying leaves(as this is where I tend to find them most often, sometimes in the water meter box) They do not seem to have any eyes. Next time I find one I'll have to take a picture but they really are striking in how they shine.

Could they be Brahminy Blindsnakes? I saw those when I lived in Florida. About the size of an earthworm, but shiny grey silver instead of pink or brown? They’re another invasive species apparently and that’s why nothing else looks like them. But I don’t think they’re harmful to the environment like some other invasive species. According to Google, they’re also called “flowerpot snakes”.

Oh, and just an FYI, “glass snake” is also a common term for the glass lizards that live in Florida (and much of the rest of the South). Since they’re legless lizards, it makes sense that they’re colloquially called “glass snakes”. So the common names can be confusing.

So pretty and shinny and when I have transferred them to a container to move them, they always seem to die, even when I don't even touch them directly. I don't know if it's just the heat of the sun(I am not putting them in a container with a lid or leaving them in the direct sun, it's just hot in Florida) or what but, it always makes me sad because I can't ever show them to anyone and say, "Hey, look at this living mercury I found."

One episode could be about the evolution and diversity of heat pits, another one could be about jacobson's organs and forked tongues, another could be about snakes lacking external ear holes and what they still have in their heads for hearing, another could be about spider eyes and how they experience their world mostly through vibrations, another could be about compound eyes in insects! I'm much more of a tortoise guy myself. I had one as a kid because they were tather cheap and my family didnt have time to provide for a dog or cat before he grew too big (he wasn't even a Sulcata, just a normal Greek tortoise that must've had some giants for parents). He's living happily on a reptile reserve now.

Hey Clint! Out of curiosity, would you be willing to do a video on Schlegel's giant blind snake with the pet rating thing? Not advocating they should or shouldn't be, I just know very little about them/they seem to be bigger than most blind snakes/the blind snakes intrigued me a lot when you talk about them here. Tbh the jaw structure relationship with feeding also made me curious about diet and logistics there. I assume they're not like a crocodilian in the sense of 'dangerous and don't do it' but could also fall under 'fragile health and don't do it' or 'expensive and don't do it' or 'housing one happily is beyond you and don't do it'. No actual plans there for me. Just wondering because they're pretty different from most snakes shown, and bigger seems easier to handle in theory. Bearing in mind they're burrowers.

Hey Clint! I think it’s safe to say with my 6ftx2ftx6ft enclosure that I’m one of the few people that are right for a green iguana! Those little guys are still a lot of work but they’re really fun to keep once they trust you! My whole family loves my little guy.

I absolutely love your videos. I had no idea that there was this much diversity in snakes! So cool! Getting to visit your reptile house a few weeks ago was just awesome. Seeing my kids get to interact with the reptiles and learn made me (and them) so happy! As for "if you're in to that kind of thing" um, yes!! The bleeding from the eyes "as if possessed by a demon" bit made me laugh 🤣
