"High 85. Wind gusts could reach 150mph." Yeah, that sounds like a great forecast...

150MPH winds...damn, that's pretty darn fast if you think about it. O_O
@alemarion7 жыл бұрын
Katrina had winds of at least 175 MPH
@craigc.70047 жыл бұрын
That was over water, in fact in a couple spots the gusts may have been over 200 mph (sustained 175 mph around midday). Even if Katrina made landfall with 175 mph winds, it would not have produced those over land, except for perhaps a sandy barrier island. Friction would have knocked it back on land (but make no mistake gusts of 130, 140 mph can still do extremely devastating damage).

If you read the actual emergency reports it was literally saying the winds will be strong enough to throw kitchen appliances into the air. I’m talking fridges and stoves. That’s how strong the winds were.

I think the name is "Eye Of The Storm" by Stephen Arnold Music, but we call it the 2005 storm alert music.

Years of therapy has finally made me accept that the brief time I can see the text of a Weather Channel red warning alert finishing, while I await the dreaded beeps of doom, is by a wide margin the most excruciating torture ever endured by man.

Too bad TWC replaced it. This tone will always be the more effective one.

Therapy is a scam ultimate solution use common sense
@Kurzov Жыл бұрын
As I recall, the reason for the change to the current TWC "alert crawl" was some kind of law regarding making similar "crawls" / weather alert messages more accessible. Though I'm not certain of that.

Dj0287 Just to see one of the most devastating and iconic Hurricanes in world history on a Local Forecast where it states"Winds could occasionally gust over 150MPH" is something we may never see again on a Local Forecast.
@Dj02876 жыл бұрын
Well that was one reason why I posted it. The other reason why is because everyone I talked to about Katrina not from here would always say..."Oh I thought Katrina hit New Orleans" and I wanted people to see that we were the ones that was actually hit with the strongest part of the hurricane. I still have the original recording from that day on VHS.
@JavierSanchez-dq8ie6 жыл бұрын
Dj0287 That's a good point, most people think that New Orleans was the worst hit when that is completely false. New Orleans got the weaker western portion of the storm and they only faced Category 1 like conditions. If the levee system worked New Orleans would've recovered quickly. Mississippi got the worst hit with 25 foot storm surge and gusts over 150mph.
@Dj02876 жыл бұрын
Yep trust me I know I live in Gulfport. But it's good to know that someone that doesn't live down here knows what we went through compared to New Orleans.

For LGemini: What I would have put there if I was working for TWC would be "Hurricane [name of hurricane here (in this case, Katrina)] and instead of a heavy raincloud icon, I would put that animated spinning hurricane symbol; you know what I'm talking about.

Hahahaha. Indeed. Love the total monotone of the voice while predicting the next day's weather. But the rest of the week, it's going to be sunny!

Well I live north of I-10 so they weren't as strong as on the immidiate coast..but judging by the tree damage and roof damage i would estimate 100+ mph gusts probably over 120 mph.

I see that you have cable instead of satellite because the local forecast in satellite doesn't provide any local information, just a map of the country and forecasts for all the major cities. When I get my own place I'm going to install cable instead of satellite so I could get a better local on the 8s forecast.
