Woolly socks (preferably made by your grand mom) against the skin, then layer of something to keep the warmth in the woolly sock at the skin. That works well down to -10 or even colder before it's time for proper winter shoes with the same sock tactics. :) Blood flow is crucial, so keep moving. Cheers from Finland!

Good on you for mentioning Limes disease - my girlfriend has got it from MTB and it has really messed her health up.

It's most important that we read some info on ticks. There is a lot to them and they are not that scary, but the disease is TERRYFYING, so do not underestimate. Most important: they climb undergrowth up to 120cm high, so legs are most at risk, high grass area like wild fields: AVOID. Blind exploring into animal routes and habitats-ticks will be present and abundant. SECOND: they are tiny, period! Our skin is a challenge for them to bite through, unlike mosquitos needle. It actualy takes them about 24h to bite through the skin and risk of disease is low till that point. You can really let a tick ride you home and remove him in good light with good tools instead of messing him up. THRIDLY: a self tick checkup and good habits after every ride are the most important, more so if you've been riding through trails with tall grass etc on both sides slapping your lower legs. Animals use those trails too and so ticks are waiting there too. On arrival home also do not undress and throw clothes on your bed or chair, ticks can "drop in" to your sitting/slipping area and work on that skin overnight or game session. Undress in the bathroom. Washing with fairly abrasive "soap sponge pocket" (they used to be popular, still circling around in various forms) might actually rip a tick away because he is not well ancored yet, with no harm to us. But visual checkup is key and educating yourself is key also-about ticks habits, preffered habitat conditions, and removal(worm winter=more ticks). If you're bad with tweezers, buy springloaded tick removing tweezers for animals, magnifying glass for inspecting pulled out piece. NOT the mini crowbar for ticks-it's mildly effective and twisting tick is not recommended. Also shake your clothes vigorously above a bathtube or shower "tray" in hope you can shake of ones that did not found skin yet.

@Bob Longhorn Might be random, but very interesting. I'm guessing we affected the numbers or got quite a few spieces like those lizards to extinction already, that were balancing Lime disease at source and now we suffer for it. My uncle got infected recently just before retirement after life as a forester/ranger working for national forest :-( I also chatted online for some time as a teenager with a girl that needed to talk, she had it too. It was so depressing after some time, to hear the suffering she was going through, I broke contact. Not proud of that :'-( . Check yourself up people.

@Bob Longhorn never thought of it. It's crazy how much we suck and how many things are there to fix. But humanity doesn't do compromise well, so I'm not hopefull. Based on Attenborough's recent documentary on Netflix, i give another 50 years to our planet. Newborn now, will not live to retirement. But no one cares or wanna hear that, so documentary ended with politically correct "it's gonna be fine" @lime yeah it can be different for everyone, you never know what package of terrible symptoms you gonna get.

I use flat pedals, especially during the frigid Chicago winters. The key to warm feet is layers. Wool socks, and if it's really cold I'll double-up the socks. Often I'll tuck in the leggings in between the layers of socks. Then shoes over the socks. Then I either use snowboots over the shoes, or some other layer over the shoes to keep the air from reaching my feet. The idea is to create a layer of insulation and air around my feet. The worst things for me are to let the outside air seep in, or to offer a way for the cold to get transferred in to my shoe -- I picture cleats and screws as a reverse heat-sink, offering a direct channel to my feet, therefore no cleats.

I’m glad you talked about insect repellent for clothes. Many years ago, I made the mistake of putting DEET on my Lycra tights. Bad idea! DEET melts the Lycra big time. And you really do NOT want to get Borrellia from a tick bite; it will ruin your life!

Cleat position was the single hardest thing to get a grip of for me, i kept getting knee pain on longer rides. I twisted my cleat about 1mm and the knee pain went. Also Shimano Multi release cleats (SH56) made life so much easier when starting out.

I think HT Components pedals should be mentioned as well, when taking about the major clipless pedal brands. People like Gwin and Pierron use them quite successfully in Downhill, and of course Schurter and Courtney in XC. Cheers guys

For the silica beads you used in making the boot / shoe dryers just by the clear bead cat litter it is exactly the same stuff but much cheaper as it’s use isn’t for “water absorption” in particular.

Great vid, as always very informative, i ride my fatbike with flat pedals in the winter. I am in Quebec Canada, so minus 10 to 25C is common. I put foot warmer (little hotties) on top of my foot, on my Ski socks in my winter hicking boots. At -20 C i can go 2 hrs and my toes keep warm. I find that with the wind and the fact that my feet are not as stressed that when i am walking the extra Heat is needed

I recently retired my shimano M087 after around 10 years of use. They haven't seen huge mileage, but 1 regular commuting winter in sunny UK ;-p (snow made an appearance that year and so salt probably too) and some touring/MTB mostly in Poland. Always used blue threadlock and never had stripped a bolt. Cleats been swapped once but were touched coupple of times, not due to loosening. Luckily the bolts are standard, so if you have the skills, you can buy stainless and trim them to length if worried about corossion, I never did. So use threadlock and don't carry spare cleat bolts x5 ;-p ;-p ;-p (Never lost one either)

Hi, Need some help with tyre pressures when riding in mud.My bike moves around so much in mud it gives no confidence.I am slightly over weight so run 30psi in both front and rear.My tyres are Maxxis Minion DHR II on the rear and Highroller II on the front....thanks 👍👍👍
@peter-zs4ml
@peter-zs4ml 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the width of your tire and your rim. Then there is the stiffness of your sidewall. And how aggressive you take the corners, or how rough the terrain is. All these factors will dictate the pressure. No single answer.
@keirfarnum6811

Some types of mud are going to be slick no matter what you do with your tires. That’s part of the challenge of mountain biking. I used to live in Alaska and the mud was comprised of volcanic silt that got really slick when it was impacted and wet. Sometimes it was like riding on ice. And during winter, there were places we rode where we encountered ice that was melted by running water that was rippled and so slick, it was impossible to stand on without crampons. Even studded winter tires wouldn’t grip. Flat ice wouldn’t have been so bad, but with wet bumps and ripples, the tires just got pushed everywhere (I was the only one who could stay upright). These challenges are what make mountain biking fun though.
