he fell out a tree, or off something in a playground (can't quite remember all the details!) when he was a kid and he pretty much fell on his face. he still had his baby face with a wee button nose, as all kids do, and no one realised the damage done. wasn't until his face started maturing in puberty that it became obvious that his nose in particular had been damaged, as it grew in all wonky.
