So let me get this straight. Kid wants Herod’s respect but if Kid wins, Herod will be dead. That makes sense.
@michaelborden3632 ай бұрын
That's why the kid missed, he didn't wanna kill his dad. Or it's a part of the reason he missed.
@KanekiKen-lm1dl2 ай бұрын
I mean look at Kid, he didn’t die instantly. He was probably expecting Herod to lie there like that, and with his dying breath finally show respect to his son. It’s fucked, but he knew that was the only thing Herod understood.

@@KanekiKen-lm1dl what good does that do you if you’re dead. And if he won, then Harrod would be dead and wouldn’t be around to respect him.
@WNShadow8142 ай бұрын
@@steve-on3234short of a head shot most guys didn’t die instantly. I think kid wanted to win the draw and prove to everyone he was faster and better. Than walk over to his dad who would be lying on the ground drawing his last breaths. Kid hoped that his dad would acknowledge the kids skill declare that he truly was his son and he was proud of the man the kid had become and then die. Kid is legitimised by his dad as his true son and heir inheriting his fortune and ownership of the town and can then as the new boss end the tournament. He gets the respect, the cash, the power and the name. Unfortunately Harod didn’t get the memo. Harods wife was unfaithful with a farmer so Harod killed his wife and the other guy. It also sowed a big seed of doubt over the parenthood of his son so he never respected him and told him repeatedly that he was inferior and had the hands of a farmer. Someone like that was unlikely to ever declare the kid as his biological son even in death. Makes the kids game plan an unrealistic act. He’s not the first to do something extreme looking for validation from a parent and won’t be the last
@williamrose7184Ай бұрын
The respect is earned as the man is dying. Do you understand now?

U can win and not kill someone. It literally happened in the movie when the kid won against the Swedish champion. He shot him in the arm and leg and the guy gave up.
@alexsolomon79912 ай бұрын
Yes but you forget the scene n the movie just before the duel with Keith David's character when Hackman changed the rules to make all duels to the death. And one of the reasons he made the change was that David's character had been specifically hired by the townspeople to assassinate him. So even if DiCaprio's character was his son there was absolutely no way he could back down and lose ..or let his opponent live....or he would lose all control over the townspeople.
@doctormalleycatАй бұрын
@@alexsolomon7991 killing your opponent was legal already he didnt have to make it mandatory to kill keith david he could of just killed him anyway to win the tournament he could of spared the kid but i believe he thought the kid was either good enough to beat him or he wanted to fight court so bad that he had to shoot to kill the kid to fight court because he couldnt risk taking kid lightly in an actual gunfight he had to win the fights to get what he wanted
@GustavaeАй бұрын
@@doctormalleycat It wasn't that he made it legal. He made it mandatory. "If you try to leave town, my men will kill you. If you refuse to fight, my men will kill you. You had your chance to quit, now it's gone." He didn't want people messing with his game. He wanted to be the last man standing. Nobody is allowed to leave the other alive after that.

I wonder how a movie so dumb could have become so popular. The last thing people in the Frontier wanted was to be shot dead by a better shooter. So high noon-style duels were extremely rare and if a guy had a cow with someone else the preferred to deal with it was to get a drop on him and get over with. Sometimes he failed, the gun didnt work and he ended up on the wrong side of the equation, but in general they tended to pick this method, as the guy who killed Bill Hickok. This dumb movie instead pretends that everyone who thought he was a good shot was just waiting for an occasion to go Gary Cooper.

Man I have to rewatch this. Haven't seen it in years. Leo must have been 15 or 16 here. Gene Hackmans best performance for sure. How cold he was throughout but him saying, "It was never proved that he was my son..." While Leo reached out his hand toward his dad, was cols as ice. 😮... I just wish that in ALL the westerns Hollywood was making back in the 80s and 90s, they were more accurate. They were always SO CLEAN. Every one of them, clothes were clean, starched and pressed. Hell, even the random farmers and people on the streets are always clean lol... Luckily Quentin Tarantino cam and did Django and more accurately represented the nasty, dirty, disease ridden times.
