Great work on your Clivias. I had a big Clivia that had two pups. Because I put them outside the plants got water logged and started dying. I took off all the soil and put the two surviving pups in a very fine dust from a bottom of a bag of sand. That pulled out all the excess water and then I put them in a good draining soil and two years later, they are doing great. They both flowered late winter.

If you can keep the roots from getting too wet and avoid direct sunlight they usually do very well. You can see how much my plants have recovered after changing the soil.

I started with 1 small Clivia more than 35 years ago. I now have 12 huge 7 gallon or more pots filled with blooming .Clivia. All from the single baby plant. They spend the summer outside under 70 foot tall White Pines. They bloom here in my basement every January thru February, under minimal plant light. The pots are near NE facing large doors, and the temperature stays about 50degrees F. In the daytime. They seem to bloom best when potbound.

Yes, when pot bound they focus more of their energy into flowering and less into leaves and new plants. That must be a beautiful sight in winter when there is little else in flower. They are such resilient plants that will last for many years.

Good job in saving these bulbs … I killed mine because the weather here is too hot and wet during summer. Not for clivias. 😅😢😂.

Looks amazing! Are these easier to care for than amarhyllis? I tend to rot Them.
@Gardeningat58N2 жыл бұрын
I would say they are slightly more difficult than Amaryllis, although it depends on where your growing the plants. It is very easy to rot Clivia if the soil isn't well drained and if they are watered too much over the winter months. But in some ways they are easier than Amaryllis as they don't need high light levels in order to flower don't need much fertiliser, are more pest resistant and can handle low temperatures well (but not freezing). As long as you can avoid rot, keep them away from too much light and allow them to get cold over winter they should grow well and flower each spring.

i need to report my clivia because it seems not growing at all. How often do you water them?
@Gardeningat58N2 жыл бұрын
Over winter I only give them a tiny amount about once a month, I pretty much let the soil dry out completely when the temperatures are cold. Over summer I water them regularly, although I allow the top layer of the compost to dry out in between waterings and I never let the compost get too wet.

I love Clivias but I've given up on them because I have the same problem reblooming every year. I buy one in flower, enjoy the blooms and then look after it for a full year. The next year, it sends up a beautiful flower spike and just as the buds are swelling up and starting to open, the whole stem turns brown & mushy and rots back to the base of the plant. I was told the first time it happened that it was a fungal disease, and I was unlucky but the same thing has happened with three plants from 3 different suppliers over 6 years. Any thoughts? I'd love to be able to grow clivia again but am just getting too discouraged by this problem.
@Gardeningat58N2 жыл бұрын
That's not an issue I've encountered before so I'm not sure what the cause might be. It could be too much water, not enough potassium or the wrong temperature. If you try growing them again I would feed them with tomato feed, keep the soil only slightly damp and allow it to dry out well over winter and keep the temperatures close to 10C (50F) for a few weeks over winter if possible. When it comes into flower keep it only slightly damp and around 15-20C (59-68F).

@@Gardeningat58N that's pretty much what I've done before. Maybe I'll try again and see if I have any better success this time. It's just so frustrating seeing so many people getting them to rebloom without effort when I can't!

@@pippas5808 My sympathy. I've heard that if you have a fungus problem thoroughly disinfect pots before using them again.
@pippas58082 жыл бұрын
@@botanicaltreasures2408 each time I used a brand new pot & compost. It's so upsetting, especially as it happens just as they are about to start blooming again! It's been a couple of years since I tried and we've moved area, so maybe the next time I see one for sale, I will try again. I've also wondered about growing from seed, although I know that means a long wait for flowers!
@botanicaltreasures24082 жыл бұрын
@@pippas5808 You might have better success if you increase the proportion of sand in your soil mix. Evidently South African soil can be quite sandy. Maybe cactus soil would work.

Yes, my plants are just starting to flower so I will make an update in about a months time.
