If you want flowers from your Clivia, do this in the autumn/winter season.
I love Clivia, they're an incredibly luxuriant houseplant with thick green foliage. And if grown correctly, they'll grace you with their vibrant flowers in shades of orange and yellow. In this video I'll walk you through exactly what sort of care they need including sunlight exposure, watering, soil substrate, and fertilizer. I will breakdown exactly what needs to be done to encourage flowering. And I finish the video by demonstrating how to root prune these plants for even longer enjoyment of their beauty.

I really appreciate this video 🫡! I've walked past this plant at my local nursery for OVER TWO YEARS but feared it would be too light-demanding for a house plant in Portland, Oregon. I do have a huge south-facing window that may fit its needs🤞. It's great to know about its watering restriction. It will coordinate well with my cactus schedule 🌵. Knowing about the loooong wait for blooms is important. I'm definitely an impatient plant mom, but clivia's blooms seem worth the wait ⏳️. Thank you for this concise & informative video! (BTW, I'm absolutely in love with your plant room💚! What an amazing place to sit and read a book 🪴.)

Hi! Yes a south facing window will be perfect in Portland. I’m really glad you found the video and inspired you to pick one up. I was looking at mine today thinking how STUNNING they look ALWAYS. And coordinating with your cactus watering schedule is excellent. That’s a great way of putting it. Cheers!

I have 4 clivia. The grower I got them from, (years ago,) sent a care sheet with them. He recommended that they be dry and cold during the winter. That has worked for me. But the leaves on mine don't look nearly as good as yours. I'm in Central Florida. I leave them out all winter unless we are going to get a hard freeze. You don't do a cold spell with yours. I may try a different horticulture on a couple that haven't bloomed yet. I got 3 as seedlings and one as a grown plant.

Yes I just leave mine inside all year. In the winter my home is about 62 and summers about 76 so a little variation but not much

I’ve got a really old clivia (15 yrs?) and a 3 yr. old one. Had them outside all summer (cape May area) and plan to bring in soon. I always thought they needed really cool temps in their winter dormancy. I have put in dark garage and that didn’t work. So this winter I plan to just keep in coolest room I have (~67 degrees)
@plantvibrations

The coolness certainly doesn’t hurt, but I’ve found the water restriction is more essential

Another Timely upload :) Just brought inside mine last night (tempts getting down to 50ish here... also zone 7b) Haven't had much luck with Clivia.. they just sit there, not growing nor blooming. Have been told NOT to mess with the roots or will cause a set-back ? Obviously not true after seeing your rough pruning. Re; potting mix. Also advised on mixing 50% orchid bark for FAST drainage. One year I kept the plant on the exterior South side of my home (protected from direct Sun) This year I tried the North side... no improvement ? Made sure the bulbs weren't buried too deep when repotted too. I'd be happy is it would just send up a few New leaves... blooms can wait :) ps. jealous of yours.

Hmm that’s really strange. I leave mine indoors in bright rooms and they thrive! The guy I root pruned has doubled inside since I filmed this video about 8 months ago. I do like the idea about orchid bark, it makes sense to me

Clivia roots are often referred to as tuberous. They are thick & fleshy and store water like a tuber, so that is why they want/need water less often. If we use a typical houseplant soil like he shows here in plastic pot indoors, then it almost guarantees the bottom roots will be rotted like in his video here. They would prefer much more drainage, like adding lots of extra perlite, especially at the bottom, or using an unglazed clay pot which dries faster.

Hello, I live in Ontario Canada and I inherited my mom's Clivia plant, it must be at least over 20 years old. I have had it for the last 3 years and it has bloomed once, in my care. There are three plants in the container. I feel that it needs to be reported but don't know what kind of soil it needs. Could you help me with that🙏

I repotted into a much bigger pot. Should I repot into a smaller pot? Should I separate the two plants in the current pot, or can I keep them together? Also, if I use a grow light in the winter, how many hours are good if they are dormant?
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations Жыл бұрын
If they are happy you may as well leave them be. It’s truly your choice. A grow light for 8 hours should be enough during dormancy
@evanmogen325
@evanmogen325 Жыл бұрын
no need to separate, and a bigger pot is fine as long as they have strong drainage to prevent root rot. It will take at least a year for them to root into a bigger pot and probably wont flower until the year after. 8/9 hrs is fine

I have few clivias in my garden but some tips of the leaves are yellow and dry. Should I cut the whole leaf or just the tips? Cheers
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 10 ай бұрын
If it’s just a couple leaves I normally opt to remove the entire leaf if the yellowing is annoying. You can trim off just the yellow but I never rly like how it looks. Try both and see what you prefer

Hi! I was given this plant as a gift but I don't know how to take care of plants. when I received it it was already in bloom, the little roots come outside the bottom of the pot. I watered once I week since then (two weeks ago) but now the flowers are falling :-( and the flowers are also more soggy ...What could I be doing wrong? The plant came in a plastic pot and I placed it in a bigger pot in indirect sunlight. Thank you!

I don't get why some say clivia need a cool rest when online it says larger plants are known to bloom in summer and fall on top of winter so they clearly aren't getting a cool rest before summer and fall to initiate flowering...

What a coincidence! I am now looking for a new home for my 9 huge Clivias. They all started with one 6” plant 35 years ago. Now they are all very large and thriving. They spend the summer outside and inside under lights in the basement due to many cats and dogs. They have bloomed magnificently every year with multiple large flower heads.

10:01 I live in North Carolina and I was given two large clivia miniata plants several years ago and each winter I have put them in my garage to winter over and they never get watered until they do start sending up the bloom stalks and I notice them. They have bloomed every year, beautifully! But one year I left one outside and it totally died back and I thought it was absolutely dead but that spring it suddenly put up a bloom stalk and bloomed! So, I have moved this year farther south, still in NC and I have decided I’m going to try planting two of the three that I have now outside and see how they do. Mine multiply in the pot so the last time I separated them I got five or six plants and I could do the same thing again now. I love them. They are so beautiful in the spring. Thank you for highlighting them and the great video.
