Verbally explaining this and getting people to understand it seems difficult but seeing the written example and explaining makes it 10x easier.

I am currently taking a locksmithing course with foley belsaw and I found this at first to be an absolute nightmare of a concept. the written number charts were confusing and the explanations were hard for me to understand just written. I found myself re-reading the same long winded explanations over and over trying to get it! this video made me realize that this is actually much more simple than I thought and I now have a much better understanding of the progressions and the math involved and It has really helped me get through those parts of the course!

Great explanation PJ, I appreciate your going through all that. Took me a couple of views to understand the bit at the end (20:55) about using smaller top pins for chambers with master pins but I think I understand - it’s because normally (in your example) with no mastering, when the lock is used there’s only a spring and .200 top pin, but with mastering, depending on which key is used (change or master) the master wafer might *also* get pushed up into the bible with the top pin, which the spring wasn’t really designed for and which causes excess pushback when inserting/removing the key. At least that’s my take on it 😊

Hey PJ- This must be a more advanced step? I don't even know what your talking about at square one. Lol Where should I search for a problem that would require Master Keying? I guess I need to know what that is to begin with. I'm a dummy..but you are making me smarter! Thanks

A true master key system is required on places like Hotels and Resorts as well as places with many employees that should only have access to certain locations. A true understanding of Master Key Systems is needed to lay out a property such as the Venetian resort in Las Vegas and Macau and Singapore. Yes, the guest rooms are all electronic locks, but the back of house doors are all still mechanical and tracking every key issued to employees and outside contractors. Why? Electronic locks are for tracking guest room entries so the casinos do not have to pay out robbery claims, but are easier to bypass than mechanical systems. Some doors are accessible by Housekeeping, some by Engineering, some by Security, Food and Beverage, Marketing etc. Each department is issued a master level key to their area and those areas area also have their individual keys. But the Theoretical Master will work everything. Sub-masters are automatic once you have chosen the parameters for your master key system. If you understand the entire system you can choose a sub master down to fitting only four patterns, where a column master fits 16 patterns in a Column down the system. A Row Master fits 16 patterns in a row, etc, you can find more sub-masters than usable change patterns in a master key system.

Good video. You had me right up until you introduced the sub-master key. What is the sub-master and how does it work? Does it work any of the locks except for the ones keyed only for the Master? Everything I read on-line about it was just confusing. Help from anyone would be appreciated.
@kurogane2x Жыл бұрын
A submaster works under a grandmaster key. Basically imagine the submaster as masterkey A and all the change key under it are called a1, a2 and so on. Now imagine you have a couple of submaster key (a, b and c) all having their own change keys that only the specific submaster can open, meanwhile the grandmaster key can open everything.

I am learning so much from you. I appreciate your effort because I know you must be a busy guy. I have a real passion for locksmithing, and am trying to learn all I can. I do have one question though; in your example it looks like the #1 key cuts would be shallower than the master cuts. I watched another video (not one of yours) that said your master key cuts should be the shallowest because otherwise a service key could be cut to fit the master. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.
@clksupplies3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you want to have 1 cut on the master key that is the shallowest depth available-PJ

Somehow I missed seeing both your videos on master keying. Anyhow, I'm still in the learning process but have master keyed a small number of Kwikset locks and I purchased your master keying kit for schlage that provides the master key, user keys and chart. I don't care for those Schlage f-series. They don't seem like good candidates for master keying. Are they a problem to m.k. or could it be my lack of experience? Thanks for this series of videos. Hopefully I can download the info at the provided links. #Lockboss

Ok, I've found a spec sheet for Schlage locks that calls out a .200 top pin for a bottom pins 4,5,6. So if I add a master 2 to a 4 I'll get a functional 6 and I think that should be good with the .200 top. Do I have that right, #lockboss?
