My old grandad, he was born in the late 1800, he worked in his own woods in the winter pulling lumber with horses, it is easier when its snow. He never wore gloves. And the Scandinavian winters are cold. Maybe it comes with adjusting to it, being out in the cold makes you notice it less. But it comes and bites you in the behind when you get old with all sorts of ailments in the bones and joints.

Important safety tip: don't ride in a cloak or cape with only a single closure at the neck, as many "costume" type cloaks have. If the cloak slips to one side while you're horseback, and your horse proceeds to step on it, you can easily get choked. (Don't ask how I know this...) Also, I didn't sit on my cloak, as this rider did, but allowed it to drape over the cantle of my saddle and my horse's quarters like an English hunt-field "rump rug". Amazing how it trapped the horse's body heat and kept both of us warm. Big kudos to you for patiently taking training opportunities with your young horse in the field!

My colt attempted to kill one of our goat kids. My parents were pretty upset with him. He had got the kid down and was pawing him. He broke the kid's femur and jaw. Thankfully the kid survived and is doing ok now. Our dog helped correct my colt later since he was inclined to go after more sheep and goats once he learned that he could dominate them. The colt is a gelding, but he was in the terrible twos at the time.

I just found these videos today and I love them! As a rider myself for many years, I found that in winter simply being astride a horse will keep you quite warm, because their body heat rises. We had a big Friesian a while back and he was an absolute furnace. He'd kick off so much heat that even on the coldest day, I had to take off my coat and sometimes even my sweater! I'd completely forget about the weather until I dismounted, then be like OMG brrrr when did it get so freezing cold?! lol

Great vid. Talos made me laugh when he bit your cloak. From what I've read in historical books, winter travel was avoided unless absolutely necessary such as answering summons from the king. As to the glove issue, I think you're right the rider would have wrapped up in the cloak. Those riding in a wagon or carriage would have worn gloves since they didnt have to hold reins. Loved seeing Talos do the Spanish walk.

From my experiences with cloaks, especially the long travel cloaks, I would assume it possible they just grabbed them with both hands, thus holding them in place and keeping their hands warm at the same time. If you get used to it it's quite impressive how much can be done with the hands while having a cloak wrapped around them.

First, you need to have some ties for your cloak. Second, keep your mantel or hood up over your head. Fur hats must have been a thing. Third, give me your palm and hand length size and I will spin and knit or felt or sew some fingerless mitts at least. A bit of leather in the palm would be good for reins. In real cold weather shearling mitts would offer wind protection. Hides and skins best for wind protection. Would be happy to collaborate. As a master handspinner.

You should do a more in-depth video on Medieval cloaks, if there were differing styles, their uses, and anything popular media might get wrong about cloaks.

@@chiaroscuroamore They are so cute when they do things like that. My horse is super curious and just has to check everything out propperly. Including figuring out how to open the latches on all of the doors in the stable, it is annoying. But she looks so funny when she works on using her lips and tounge to open a door 😂 (the horses can't get into any feed by accident because we have all of their food on the stable loft)

A bit later gloves become a mark of nobility - they mean one doesn't have to work with one's hands. That's why in the Renaissance nobles in portraits if they're not wearing gloves - they're holding them, or they have them somewhere nearby. Dumas and Rostand even use gloves as plot points on various occasions in pieces set in the early 17th century. Not yet true in the Middle Ages then?
@ModernKnight
@ModernKnight 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure about that in the Middle Ages. Hawking gauntlets were a thing when riding, but to protect against the hawk’s talons obviously. I’ve just not seen any evidence of riding gloves in this period. Who knows?
@lauravivanco
@lauravivanco 4 жыл бұрын
@@ModernKnight I've found an article (on JSTOR) which describes the gloves in this image (Piers Plowman, Bodleian MS Douce 104) as riding-gloves: "The figure on folio 19r could be Reason, but the riding-gloves would be just as appropriate to Peace, who mentions his horse in the adjacent complaint" www.jstor.org/stable/3733913 The illustration of the allegorical person wearing the gloves can be found here. He's clearly fairly well off, but isn't riding a horse: www.luminarium.org/medlit/msdouce104f019r.jpg Via www.larsdatter.com/gloves.htm I found a photo of Henry IV's leather gloves, which actually look quite similar to the ones in the manuscript illustration: www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc-carlson/histshoe/redfern/GLOVES/plateII.htm
@lauravivanco

Oh, and apparently brown leather riding-gloves were found in the tomb of Richard II: books.google.co.uk/books?id=t1SFAgAAQBAJ&lpg=PA61&ots=yTGiuo9cXn&dq=%22henry%20iv%22%20%22riding%20gloves%22&pg=PA61#v=onepage&q=%22riding%20gloves%22&f=false That's also mentioned in Herbert Norris's Medieval Costume and Fashion, which has a section on medieval gloves: books.google.co.uk/books?id=xiqahsJPHSgC&lpg=PA92&ots=ChAdhbEIj3&dq=%22henry%20vi%22%20%22riding%20gloves%22&pg=PA89#v=onepage&q&f=false
