Here is the maths behind this trick: In the standard 12 hours' analogue clock, 360° angle for 60 minutes or 12 hours, so, one minute travels by 6° angles and one hour travels by 30° angles as 360/12 = 30°. So that's how we get multiplier of 30 for hours' hand (30h). Now for -11/2 or -5.5 for minutes' hand: Let's take 12:00 (or 00:00), the angle is 0° or 360°. Now after 1 minute at 00:01 or 12:01 = The Angle between 12 and 12:01 is 6° (as 360° by 60 minutes so 1 minute = 360/60 = 6°). But at 12:01 the hour's hand will shift towards 01 by 1/2° or 0.5° angle, so the angle will be shorter by *0.5° (explained below), hence angle for 12:01, 6° - 0.5° = 5.5° or 11/2 (for 1 minute as 00:01). (30*12 - 11/2*01 = 360-5.5 = 354.5 or 5.5 for inner angle) *How 0.5° : In a 12 hours Clock an hour hand travels 30° for an hour and there are 60 minutes in an hour. So in one minute an hour hand travels by 30/60 = 0.5° angle. So for 1 minute travel each, angle will be less by 0.5° from 6° (as angle between a minute is 6°), 6° - 0.5° = 5.5° or 11/2° So 5.5° need to less for each minute travel by the hour hand. Hence the formula is |30h - 5.5m|, ('h' for hour & 'm' for minutes in 'hh:mm').

As explained above, this is an another method on same above principle: = |(Hour's hand no. - Minute's hand no.)| *30° +/- (total minutes *0.5°) (For 2nd part (minutes *0.5°), if hour's hand moved towards minute's hand then value to be subtracted otherwise to be added). i.e; for 07:20 => minute's hand at 04, so = |(7-4)| *30° + (20*0.5°) = 90° + 10° = 100° and for 01:20 = |(1-4)| *30° - (20*0.5°) = 90° - 10° = 80° Use decimals for inbetween minutes, like 3.8 for 19 minutes, 4.2 for 21 minutes etc.

Here is the maths behind this trick: In the 12 hours' clock 360° angle for 60 minutes or 12 hours, so one minute travels at 6° angles and an hour travels at 30° angles as 360/12 = 30°. So that's how we get multiplier of 30 (30h) for hours' hand. Now for 11/2 or 5.5 for minutes' hand: Let's take 12:00 (or 00:00), the angle is 0° or 360°. (30*12 - 11/2*01 = 360-5.5 = 354.5 or 5.5 for inner angle) *How 0.5 : In a 12 hours Clock an hour hand travels 30° for an hour and there are 60 minutes in an hour. So in one minute an hour hand travels by 30/60 = 0.5° angle. So for 1 minute travel each angle will be less by 0.5° from 6° (as angle between a minute is 6°), 6° - 0.5° = 5.5° or 11/2° So 5.5° need to less for each minute travel by the hour hand. The formula |30h - 5.5m| is simplified. If expressed as: = |30h - (6m - 0.5m)| or |30h - 6m + 0.5m| 30h: The hour hand travels 30° in one hour, =(360/12), as 360° in 12 hours. 6m: The minute hand travels 6° in one minute, =(360/60), as 360° in 60 minutes. 0.5m: The hour hand travels 0.5° in one minute, =(30/60), as 30° in 60 minutes. .

Why we take only 11/2
@-SankarNarayananK
@-SankarNarayananK 10 ай бұрын
The difference in angle between the hour hand and the minute hand during 1 hour is 55 degrees. So it makes sense to use 5.5 which is equivalent to 11/2 for finding the angle covered by the minute hand (It should be noted that an minute hand will cover an angle of 360 degree for a period of 60 minutes which means every minute the minute covers an angle of 6 degree, whilst the hour hand covers an angle of 30 degree for the same duration covering an angle of 0.5 degree for every minute). So the difference in angle between the hour hand and minute hand for a minute is given by 6 - 0.5 which leaves us with 5.5. So 5.5 (or) 11/2 is the factor that we ought to use for finding the angle cover by minute hand for a specific period of time.
