that and combination of pvc pipe keeping the water and grease warm, until it hits the cold cast iron, the water and grease cools quickly and solidifies. cast iron and steel pipe worked much better with high flow toilets, draining full sinks full and long rinsing of dishes with hot water, not to mention people taking baths and draining the full tub. now everyone uses a dishwasher, showers, has low flow toilets and all faucets/heads are restricted flow. gee what could ever go wrong there? oh wait, yep, we're seeing it besides the ancient age of the plumbing causing issues.

Doncha just love it when one trade screws up the other, like pipes directly in front of the electrical? There's also sewer pipes right where the laundry appliances were originally located. Hey, at least YOU had room to work, right?

actually, from the quick glimpse, the location of electrical panel and plumbing seems to appease code requirements for clearance space. lol the plywood looks to be cut to the "minimum allowed clearance width" and the depth is probably ok, with the few smaller overhead drain lines.
@rupe53
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
@@throttlebottle5906 ... probably time for a tape measure, but an eyeball says it's tight. Code says "mount on a flat surface" but doesn't specify the actual width of any wood. Code also says you need a space 30 inches wide with nothing else besides electrical within that space. (no plumbing or gas lines) Last but not least, there needs to be at least 30 inches between the face of the panel and any obstructions. IOW, room for someone to stand / work without clunking your head or elbows. I'd say that last spec is rather tight, which is why I made my original statement.
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 Жыл бұрын
@@rupe53 a breaker panel requires thirty inches clear width and three foot open space in front of it measured from the wall and floor up like a large rectangle cube. it can be placed anywhere within the 30" width. the plywood appeared to be cut at 30" width and the pipes above appeared to be 36" away from the wall by my eye. still it's via video but, but that's likely an inspected and approved install.
@rupe53
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
@@throttlebottle5906 ... at 1:30 or so there's a drain trap directly in front of that left panel. It's close enough that wires are going around the pipe. After the 7:00 mark there's a slow scan of the same panel that looks like tight quarters to me. Seeing as that's a breaker panel (and maybe a sub panel) it was likely added well after the pipes were in place. Just my opinion, I could be wrong on the exact dimensions.

Some amateur handyman pipe repair in that soil line. The 4" cast iron could have been replaced with 3" PVC all the way from trap and would have better flow.

code dictates that, you may not downsize any drain line, it has to maintain the size of anything upstream. so 4" cast riser/vent through the building, means it has to be 4" pipe or larger all the way to the city/mains. there was clearly a 4" stack going vertical and a n ancient lead bend to toilet, which was also 4".

the problem with those caps is using the correct spanner (wrench) will twist the pipes apart because of the rust build up. Better to break them out and install new ones.
