Hello from India. Thank you sir for sharing such valuable information. I was researching on various methods and sources to obtain more plants for my orchard, but buying them has become extremely expensive. Add transport and labor costs to that and it is simply too expensive for a small farmer like me. Once I discovered air layering, I shared this idea with fellow farmers (so they could also save money) who are more experienced than me, but they said I was stupid to think a new plant can be made out of an existing one. This video not only gave me the science behind the method, but also showed a way for me on how to expand my orchard with almost no cost. You have changed the way I will farm for the rest of life. Thank you sir from the bottom of my heart.

I have used many different methods and styles to air layer fig trees and always thought that they took so long to form roots. I tried your method just as you have shown and I am ecstatic with the results and to form roots in less then 1/2 the time of every other method. It actually took 4 weeks tops and the new trees were in their pots! Great job Sir Charles.

Excellent video. I particularly appreciated three things about it: (1) the concise summary of exactly what materials you need up front; (2) your use of simple, easy-to-obtain items whenever feasible (a plastic bottle; string; aluminium foil) rather than expensive, "professional-grade" materials; and (3) your clear and succinct explanation of the plant biology (auxins from the top; cytokinins from the bottom; and the logic behind cutting or scoring in particular places on the plant to encourage root development). Many thanks.

My father in law had the most colorful beautiful crotons. When husband and I bought our first house, dad came by with 20 potted plants. We were like no, you don't have to give us another expensive wedding gift. He smiled and told us he started those plants for us when we got married 4 yrs previously, Several Christmas palms in sets of 2, 3, and 4. Most special a dozen crotons all 2 ft tall or better and a rose bush taken from his mother's rose 40 yrs previously. Yes, air layering works. He used tin foil to wrap up a bit of dirt in sphagnum moss.

Instead of using a razor blade to cut through the cambian layer, I achieved the same results by using a pipe cutting tool typically used to cut copper pipe. It has a single circular blade that when you tighten up around the branch, the blade sinks in to the depth that you desire. Simply rotate the tool around the branch. Open up the clamp slide it to the next position and repeat the process. You will have to make a vertical slit connecting both lines in order to remove the section of cambian. Easy cheesy🌳

Rob. Today everyone is into air laying everywhere you see a mounded tree, in fact it's become a landscape epidemic. When suffocated root system is forced to grow copious amounts of adventitious roots throughout the added above ground mulch soil layer. But like drowning swimmers having no sense of direction, air roots incircle and strangle trunk.

@47 E.B.O, weed is only an annual plant. Not perennial like trees. But sure would be interesting to try cloning your favorite flavor of high.

Thank you so much for this video. I previously attempted to air layer a fiddleleaf fig that had grown so large it was growing across the ceiling and was tipping its pot over from being too top heavy. It was a fail. I think there were so key points you presented which may have made it more successful. My question is what happened to the original fig tree as it looked like there were no lower leaves. Does this process always have to be done on the main trunk and at the top of tree you want to clone? Can you do this cloning on a side branch? Again this was a fantastic video!

old comment, but yes, you can air layer on any woody branch. I like to pull off nice looking branches on my japanese maple tree in my front yard. ive given away so many bonsais to friends and neighbors propagated from that tree.

Fascinating! How many can you do on a tree at the same time w/o stressing it out?

I haven't air layered in decades! Life and earning a living got in the way of my gardening passion. Your demo is excellentI I have a new Dwarf Meyer Lemon Tree (bought this past spring) and will try your method when the tree gets larger. It came with 3 stems close to the root stock. At least 1 will have to go, maybe 2. Though I understand an air layered cutting will grow to it's full size (not dwarf), if it makes it, I'll keep it trimmed to a manageable size. Love your channel and enthusiasm for everything that grows.

I’m doing this with a Norway spruce tree in both neighbor’s and our yard. I tried growing by seed from pine cone, takes too long and not always successful I have a feeling it would be more successful to try to root a cutting and that’s difficult too. Air layering is best and last option in this case.

I wonder where on the spruce you would do it.....

so much interesting information in this video!! last week I was speaking to my 70 year old neighbor and asked if it was possible to clone lemon trees he looked at me stupid and said, "no." lol I guess I might be teaching him a thing or two after watching this ;) have you got any updates of this tree that you could share with us now after 2.5years? Thanks for sharing!!

Hello Steve. I wonder if your neighbor would have said 'yes' to air-layering, as cloning is generally associated as a negative word. If your neighbor does not give you the time to air-layer; you could just take a cutting and likely be successful cloning that tree! And, yes, I'll try to do an update on that air-layer soon!! Charles :-)

Can you do a video on propagating orchids. I have many growing on trees and they produce babies occasionally but I don't know enough about propagating them. Loved your video by the way.

Hello Helen Cooper, I will keep that in mind. My last garden in Boca Raton, Florida had a tree covered with nearly a dozen varieties of orchids that I cared for. I have a few friends that grow them and will try to do an educational video in the upcoming month or two. And thank you for the compliment!!! Charles :-)

If an orchid Kiki (baby) has 4+ roots just cut it off and plant it. Don’t believe they can be air layered but maybe.

Awesome, I have a lemon and grapefruit tree that I’ve been wondering how to duplicate. After listening to you, I’ve tossed the pips and I’m going to clone them. Top marks for how informative this video has been 👍🏼

I am very grateful for all the knowledge that you've shared is nice to watch a KZbin video where it is very obvious that the person has an impeccable knowledge of what they're talking about.

Cytokines are found at the top of the plant and auxins at the root. That is why the rooting hormone used in this videos has a auxin hormone instead of a cytokine. But it was a good video, and informative.
