Hi Jay, have you noticed the tracking data randomly disappearing? I hit command+z to move back a couple steps WELL into the work flow, WELL past having tracked the clip and consequently wiped out all tracking data on 3 different masks I was using. Follow up question. Is there a way to use the magic mask to track a single frame, then apply that mask to the entire clip? Thank you in advance.
@markwillis25394 жыл бұрын
Reading the comments, I also am wondering how magic mask compares to greenscreen. It looks like I may have just wasted money purchasing a greenscreen. I can certainly see some advantage to using the magic mask, such as wearing something green during a shoot. What would be the advantage of using a greenscreen over using magic mask?
@JayLippman4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Green screen is great for replacing backgrounds, but that's pretty much all their used for. Magic Mask can be used to replace backgrounds, clone, color grade people and animals separately from the rest of the scene, and basically anything else you can use power windows for. That being said, I would say that when it comes to replacing the background, green screen might actually be better than magic mask, because you don't have to do any tracking.

Jay, do you think the Magic Mask can handle very close colors, for example, in the video you are wearing a dark black top. Do you think the Magic Mask can handle the distinction between that black top when you stand in front of a totally black background in studio conditions? That's the scenario I need for my videos, and I need to know if it can handle that, for me to decide whether to buy the Studio version.

Thanks, friend! I am so surprised to not see this in the fusion page! Also, what is the benefit (other than the very cool "Magic Mask") over just creating a power window in the color page? Seems like if the backgrounds doesn't do anything odd that masking with a power window far away from the subject wouldn't matter much.
@JayLippman4 жыл бұрын
Tracking is the biggest benefit. Tracking works so much better with magic mask than it ever did with power windows. Thanks for watching!

What is a master timeline? If i set up a new project is it there by default?
@JayLippman3 жыл бұрын
A master timeline is a locked timeline that contains all of the files in your project, and links to wherever those files are used throughout the project. So if you grade a piece of footage in the master timeline, that grade will show up in every clip made from that footage throughout the entire project. It's not on by default. You have to turn it on in the general options section of the project settings.

Do you think the magic mask is good enough to use in place of a greenscreen? 2nd question: I do have studio but was waiting for the kinks to be worked out before I upgrade. Do you still find it stable enough on windows that it's worth just pulling the trigger? I won't hold you to anything, just wondering about your current opinion (I know in your previous vid you mentioned it was okay)... Thanks, man!
@JayLippman4 жыл бұрын
I haven't really had any stability issues, but I think that has as much to do with your system as it does with Resolve. As far as green screen is concerned, I think that while Magic Mask has more versatility, green screen is better for what green screen is actually used for, which is replacing backgrounds.
@AlienDrones4 жыл бұрын
@@JayLippman Thank you sir. 😎
@JimRobinson-colors4 жыл бұрын
Jay, although that all works and your lesson is actually how to use the magic mask, you have a situation there where the two people don't intersect. New users should be aware that if you put one clip on top of the other, the easiest and fastest way would to be to just put one on top of the other and crop the top clip from one side or the other. So good lesson on the mask but not really sure if it was the best example of actual use. Blurring a background of using some exposure techniques on only one subject might have been a better real world example. Good acting though, if I didn't know your personality, I might think that you had a twin brother.

The classic Clone effect is a great way to show-off the Magic Mask tool... but it raises more questions about what other new and things it can do that old power windows can't. I guess the main benefit is the really good and easy tracking? (Tracking Power Windows is such a hassle)... I'm guessing the bright red hoodie was chosen to also help with that? Anyway great vid.. exciting time to be a hardware/cinema/gaming enthusiast I'd say....!
