I saw you pinning the pattern to your fabric, and I said, "No, no! Do a mock up first!" Then you did. Whew! I can really relate to how difficult it is to sew without a pattern. I recently sewed my daughter's wedding dress without any pattern, and it was the hardest thing ever! Many mock ups were involved. It turned out beautifully in the end, but I nearly pulled my hair out in the process. Like you, I couldn't reproduce what I did if you asked me to! Your pants came out beautifully, too. You could always add thread loops for the belt if you don't want to use regular belt loops.
@Dev-ld4gi2 жыл бұрын
This was so relatable 😅 oddly enough, I find a lot of beginner sewists are intimidated by patterns and would rather just try to make something, and I always tell them winging it is gonna be harder than almost any pattern you can find 😂 even with a lot of sewing experience, self drafting patterns always gives me terrible anxiety 😄

The day I started using tear away stabiliser on both top and bottom fabrics for buttonholes was a complete game changer. Also you can premark the placement on the stabiliser and keep the buttonholes straight more easily.

I had a similar issue when I was copying a pair of pants with the sides not matching. I think for me it was that I made the top edge straight but it actually needs a curve because it's higher in the back than in the front. Once I did that, my seams matched up correctly.

Very relatable. I'm just about finished with a sewing project that is, admittedly, more complicated than I was ready for, and it's such a relief to get it done and have it look pretty good.

I love that you give us all the process with yikes included. What a great KZbinr you are. I felt like I was there with you, celebrating both the wins and the confusion. Learning this along with you is so much easier. It's less stressful, than with those who don't show how it can go so quickly wrong, but find an answer to be fixed. Thank you.

Very comfortable looking! If you do want belt loops later you can use a ribbon instead of fabric to cut down on bolk. Or very thin belt loops in a embroidery thread just to keep the back and sides in place❤

They turned out awesome! The only thing I would change would be to make a double-ended horisontal dart at the back (where the fabric tends to bunch up) which would help the fabric lie smooth.

I loved this project :) Even the belt by itself looks great. If you would like a tipp on pattern matching: It helps to start sewing from the middle of your seam outward instead of all the way from top to bottom. This way, the top layer isn't pushed further and further from where it is supposed to go. A walking foot also worked wonders for me :)

Oh, I was eyeing fabric like that, not long ago. No idea, what it's called, though. Not something, I've seen before! It looks and feels very high end, imo. I would really like to encourage you, to take the leap towards pattern making, btw. I think, you're at a point, where it would make sense. And trust me...once you start working from a well fitting basic pattern... you'll never want to go back to cloning ready to wear or struggling with store bought patterns. The creative freedom and ease of fitting is wonderful.

your pants look amazing. if you are interested in an easy way to avoid clipping the curve of the crotch seam, I sew my outer seams first (so adding in pockets etc is done while the fabric is still layed out flat) then sew the inner seam, and then i flip one leg right side out and shove in the inside out leg and sew the crotch seam. congrats on self drafting though, keep up the amazing work.

Thanks for sharing the occasional reality of chaos when trying something new. You did so well motivating yourself to push through the hardships. They turned out so well! I wonder if you included the back darts in your pattern. At one point you mentioned not needing them because the back fit well. I just wonder if this might have caused the mismatch early on in pattern drafting. Sometimes darts are trimmed, and that would make it difficult to know how much to add to make the original pre darted pattern piece.
@Loepsie2 жыл бұрын
The back darts are quite minimal in the original, I think I just took more fabric to make the pleats in front and it straightened out :) I only traced the front along the center seam of both sides and extrapolated the width of the top from the width of the bottom

Whew, they came out all right in the end! After some real use you will see if the belt stays in place nicely without loops. I think I have some pants with just two loops (one on each side), or you could tack the belt down at the back if that ends up the moving part...
