Close Call! Major Adrenaline Moment In My First Caterham Race!

This is my first ever Caterham race! A completely wet track at Oulton Park but strangely I wouldn't have wanted it any other way - the race was more exciting than I could have imagined! The Caterham Academy cars are so pure and the driving experience so distilled it's one of the best feelings you can have in a car - this is Caterham racing!

Well done James, the first time I took mine to the track it rained as I got there. Its a stroked 1900cc with dyno 175 rwh. A few Porsche's had come to the track but left due to rain so I was on my own. The marshal told me to take it easy if it was my first time out, I assured him I would and left the gate lightly spinning it in first, hooked up in second and gave it a bit more throttle and ended up facing him sliding backwards up the road in about 10 car lengths from where I started :) The marshal called me in and he turned out to be a professional racer, he grabbed a helmet, jumped in the passenger side and did a free one hour driver training session in the wet with me. So much fun :)

I remember smashing into the barrier in an MK on the first corner at Oulton Park, after hurtling down the straight and watching the rear wheel overtake us. The rose joint had snapped and put us into the barrier at about 100mph. Great fun though

From doing the Acadamy years ago , for wet races if you put 3 widths of tank tape from he top of the screen coming back onto the roll cage , you will keep a goodly amount of the rain off the inside of the screen

Unlucky, you did awesome for your first race in the wet. Oulton is one of my favourite tracks, druids is extra slippy in the wet as you get tree sap off the over hanging trees. Everything is a learning experience and it looks like your picking it up ridiculously fast. Won’t be long before your on top of the podium 😎😎😎

So glad you’ve done this, I’ve often commented on channels for more track days but this is another step. Great to see some telemetry on screen as you’ve done. You say the cars are not the fastest but I’ve found Caterhams one of the fastest cars around a track, that’s including Porsche’s, Ferraris et al.. best at cornering. Also speedo showing 160ish (mph I take it) at certain points... that’s very quick, especially in that rain. Excellent stuff, thank you and good luck 👍
