CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Roy (Richard Dreyfuss) has a mental breakdown at dinner with his family.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg followed Jaws (1975), his first major box-office success, with this epic science fiction adventure about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) is an electrical lineman who, while sent out on emergency repairs, witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Neary's wife and children are at first skeptical, then concerned, and eventually fearful, as Roy refuses to accept a "logical" explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his job, his home, and his family to pursue the "truth" about UFOs. Neary's obsession eventually puts him in contact with others who've had close encounters with alien spacecraft, including Jillian (Melinda Dillon), a single mother whose son disappeared during her UFO experience, and Claude Lacombe (celebrated French filmmaker François Truffaut), a French researcher who believes that we can use a musical language to communicate with alien visitors. Lacombe's theory is put to the test when a band of government researchers and underground UFO enthusiasts (including Neary) join for an exchange with alien visitors near Devil's Tower, Wyoming. In 1980, a "Special Edition" was released. While its primary selling point was the addition of scenes inside the alien spaceship, Spielberg claimed that he also cleaned up some choppy editing in the second act.

Not sure how many times I watched that Simpsons episode and had no idea it was a spoof until 10 minutes ago, while watching a KZbin video of the first million dollar winner on "Who wants to be a millionaire", one of the questions was about making Devil's Tower out of mashed potatoes on "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Then it clicked. I had to find this clip.

There's always something very emotional and heart-aching about this sequence. The way how both Roy and his children are crying, it's showing how Roy knows that his behavior and obsession are affecting his family in a way that's tearing them apart; but he can't run away from the vision that's been given.

God the acting in this scene is incredible, especially the sons tears, it’s not overly dramatic, it’s just confusion and sadness and overwhelming feeling of seeing your father not be himself and unable to do anything about it. Child actors these days just over act almost airbrushes, this is just subtle and impactful.

He's not overacting, if this was really happening to you, your reaction would be extreme too. It's when actors don't really go there in that confusing, insane place in this sort of situation, that it's UNDER-acting. We are acclimated to these scenarios so much that we have lost touch with what the real deal would be like.

Comedic references from other things i just learned as a 35 year old that they are references: Homer making a circus tent in season 6 ep 15 'Homie the clown', George messing about with his mash in the movie 'UHF', and possibly the most striking as the character is also named Roy, IT Crowd season 4 episode 4 "Italian for beginners" where he is making a water park scene out of frustration finding out how the heck could it catch fire and kill anybody.

I don't know Hardy is good at playing a crazy person as proven with Fury Road and he is no stranger to Aliens due to Star Trek, but I just don't see him as the family man gone mad type. He's more of the badass hero/villain gone mad. Though he does take dedication to his roles so odds are if he did play Neary, he'd probably spend a week trying to make mashed potato art.

Either an on spot performance after reading the script for this take, or he just pulled it off because of his own personal struggles with bi-polar. Aside from the fact that I’m pretty sure Dreyfus was just portraying the character he was cast to play in his best thespian performance I could also say that he was fabulous at it due to his own struggles with Bi-polar disorder. Either way he performed spectacularly. He also performed well in Jaws and many other films but I truly believe Dreyfus was just great at adapting to his role and researched the elements and effects that said character suffered from. But I don’t personally know Richard, so I can’t really say with any amount of certainty if my presumptions hold merit. I will say that in “What about Bob”, he played a fantastic…”at the end of his rope, self loathing and greatly underrated and underestimated, Brilliant psychiatrist who finally wrote a book that was worthy of accolades from not just fellow psychiatrists but recognized enough for a TV interview on prime time television”. But his methods had unwittingly changed the life of a sociopathic, Tourette’s laden individual, who somehow managed to gain entrance into the most personal aspects of Leo Marvin’s life and gained the trust and admiration of his 2 children and ( presumably ) naive wife with a heart of gold. Despite Bob being as harmless in all reality to that of a 2 month old kitten, Leo convinces his family that Bob is a great danger to himself and the rest of the family. Despite all of this he is still dealing with the past family who owned the beautiful house that the Marvin’s now called their summer house and are at constant ends to see anything if not everything befall Leo in any and all aspects of his life. The prior family take much admiration and appreciation in Bob for any Ill gotten words that may have been made against the Marvin’s. I’m sorry….. I don’t know why I just inked several paragraphs of material pertaining to the movie “What About Bob” , when that was actually not relevant in my original comment or so I had started. I apologize and I will now tighten my lips to any and all mention of anything that is not relevant to the discussion and topic at hand. Actually, I am going to be making dinner now for the family, so sorry for any unnecessary and inconvenient readings that were totally unrelated to the original topic at hand. ☹️. SORRY

Someone made an excellent thesis for how this movie is about communication and trouble communicating. Starting with the investigators needing a translator to talk with the Mexican witness. Then the lead investigator hires the translator to communicate with English-speakers. Here Roy has trouble communicating with his family, and they with him. In a deleted scene the father can't hear his son talking to him. The eldest son soon has a temper tantrum as his father is going crazy. And of course the aliens are trying to communicate with the humans using music, and finally hand signals. Although from an interview Spielberg said he chose a Frenchman to alter the trope of a German scientist investigating and explaining the aliens' intention. If he'd chosen a natural English-speaker as the lead investigator, they might not have had the translator character and the thesis would fall apart!

Dreyfuss was on a real roll then. Then after 1989 he pretty much became MIA for the most part. Every time I look at mash potatoes since I think about ole Richard, and Devils Tower Wyoming. I have gotten old too.

I find meatloaf to be a more appropriate medium for modeling a laccolithic butte. Garnish the plate with a little parsley, and you have the trees at its base.

One of my favorite scenes in film. True, Richard Dreyfuss is a legendary egomaniacal jackass, but he was good at his job.

I guess nothing on TV in 1977 at dinner-time. Another video asked whether kids like these really were excited about _The Ten Commandments_ coming on TV, and most said "Yes."
