Me too.. I was 14 when this opened, and my friends and I stood on line at the movie theater on a very cold December night. The only seats inside the theater were within the first 20 rows,. And of course the screen was gigantic and there were big speakers everywhere. We didn't know what hit us. Afterwards nobody spoke, we just gave each other blank stares. The movie was on my my mind all winter, I saw it a couple of more times, and it still leaves me thinking as to what might be out there

It's a subtle twist on UFO mythology that often goes overlooked when talking about this movie. Here, you are given the impression that the extraterrestrials are innocently curious about humanity and human civilization, and simply aren't sure about an appropriate way to communicate or fully reveal themselves. It probably has not occurred to them that their sporadic appearances would cause disruption or make the other sentients worry they were malevolent. They just don't know what to do! The communication via tonal scale showed them that the humans had the capacity to potentially understand their way of thinking, and so they were encouraged to be brave and risk landing.

@@bluedotdinosaur I remember reading a novella about human spaceship and alien spaceship meeting each other by chance in nebula they both are studying at the same time. Situation becomes tense as both sides want to do everything they can to ensure their safety and still open paths of diplomacy. It is revealed that aliens have vastly different biology (see in IR-light, breathe ammonia and communicate with microwaves) and similar as well (two genders and only one gender crews for such mission) and technology (use of nuclear technology, FTL spacecraft). In the end both species decide to change their ships and despite knowing value of cultural artefacts (equivalent of novels) they do not exchange them. One of human crewmen, communications officer in the believes that humanity and aliens might be able to coexist peacefully as they are unlikely to compete and culturally they get along as he and alien equivalent told each other dirty jokes during short moment of idleness at the end.

So, if I'm not mistaken there's three types of biological aliens in this movie: the tall messiah-esque alien that appears first, the 'children', and the 'smiling alien' or 'communicator' that shows up last. Unless those last two types were meant to be the same. The last one looks so different, though.

@mysticwolf75
@mysticwolf75 3 ай бұрын
Yes, they were 3 separate species! According to the documentary that's on the Director's Cut DVD, Spielberg explained that he wanted the aliens to represent the diversity of types of beings on their planet, just like there are different human nationalities. It's funny you should mention that, though, because I remember when I watched this with my father as a kid, he thought that the first alien was their leader and was anemic and dying, and when Roy enters the ship, in the special edition anyway, all that light comes down on him inside the ship, and in the next scene, the tall alien comes out - my father thought the tall alien was Roy transformed into their new leader! I never thought so, but still thought it was a possibility until Steven Spielberg set the record straight!

It's really a beautiful masterpiece besdies E.T. What confuses me usually was Roy's wife and kids didn't see him leave with the aliens in the end. If only they were in the ending, Ronnie would finally believe him and even encourage him to go. I know a sequel or a remake might ruin it but what if they made either to have Roy return to Earth and reunite him with his estranged family too?

And the aliens seem to smile the same way we do, which is unlikely. Even our closest relatives, apes, have a different meaning when they "smile". It means that they are angry. A couple of years ago, a Dutch woman visited the same gorilla in the zoo every day because she thought he smiled at her. The frustrated ape found a way to escape and he attacked the woman, who luckily survived.

Bullseye. My favorite part of any movie that I have ever seen. In 1970, a taxi hovered 40 feet away from me, only 10 feet off of the ground for a full minute of itinerary. Plucking Linda B. was a no go. Me? Better luck next time. What do I need, a written invitation?

It was the human stories that did it for me. Yep, the depiction of 'friendly' aliens was (is) gorgeous, but the human wonderment in being there, phew. We're a funny lot, aren't we?

At 0:26 you start to hear part of “When You Wish Upon A Star”. I wonder if that was intentional or, perhaps subconscious on behalf of the composer.

So inside the mother ship was cut out but during that scene (inside), wonder if Roy turn into an alien. After that scene it cuts here where the alien walks out and gives the symbol and smile.

@@acat7798 I don't know what this track is called, but it sounds like the "if you wish upon a star" theme from Pinocchio. That is also Disney's main theme.

Spielberg has mentioned that since becoming a father, the ending seems wrong to him. On the other hand, there are tons of people that regret having children or ghost them after the relationship ends with he other parent.

Roy had pretty much lost his family. Granted, he might not have, if none of the alien stuff had happened. But it did, and his family reacted the way they did: abandoning him. So he wasn't leaving a supportive, nurturing wife and loving children. They left him.
