Close Encounters - Sequence with Two Deleted Scenes

This is an edited sequence form CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND that encompasses two deleted scenes. The music is included in a way that approximates how it was originally scored by John Williams, but adjusting to the footage that exists. If one compares it to the film, you hear how the music was cobbled together from two cues ("The Cover Up" and "Stars And Trucks") to cover the trucks loading and pulling out. Both of these scenes were cut before the movie was previewed but after scoring was completed.

Devil's Tower is in Wyoming. The scenes filmed here were at the old Brookley AFB in Mobile, Alabama.

Lacombe, played by Francois Truffaut, is based on real UFO researcher, Jaques Vallee. I read one of his books back in 90s. Neat guy. Joe Rogan had him on his podcast last week.

That line was not in the script. There really was a dead fly in the little girl's mashed potatoes because they'd been filming all day. She kept saying that and Spielberg liked it so much he kept it in.

I was Just SHOCKED....... Just recently, I saw a "Piggly Wiggly" truck on the highway, in early Sept 23 in SoCal region..... Same Markings, font, background blue banner, and size trailer. IT Totally Blew me away, and of Course I didn't mention it to my family that were in the car with me, and since I wasn't driving, I could follow where that truck trailer was going.....Just SHOCKED!!

I love to see this! The preview cut is interesting to me; I would have assumed that the scene of Roy on the roof would have been in that version, what with it being a part of the version that Williams scored. Do you happen to know what was in the film when the preview screenings took place?

Despite the rooftop scene being scored, it was cut out before the preview. All I know for sure is that the original version of the Neary introduction was in the preview. It was replaced with a newly shot insert for the original release but the preview version was put back in for The Special Edition (and Director's Cut). Also in the preview was a little segment in the opening scene where Lacombe tells Laughlin that he wants him to convey his emotions as well as translate his words. That's the only "deleted scene" in the special features that was in the preview. The others were all cut out prior to that. It's also possible that the first spider-like alien greeter and the final Rambaldi "Puck" shots were not in the preview version, along with several other inserts, but I don't have definitive information handy about when certain changes were made, before or after the preview. Definitely in the preview version was using the actual song "When You Wish Upon a Star" over the end credits (the recording heard in "Pinocchio" sung by Cliff Edwards).

They should have left in the roof platform scene it shows the neighbors all see what a look he is. And it's better than in building the devil's Tower in the living room that was kind of a bit much...

They are 35mm workprint elements transfered in 1997 in standard definition for DVD. They haven't been retransferred in HD since. When editing on a movie is finished, the original camera negative is conformed to the final cut, which is why that always looks better. Quality is not a consideration with work materials, and on this it was already 20 year-old film at the time it was transfered in standard definition and released on DVD with compression.

I think it had the opposite meaning... they wanted something that would scare away even those who might have fanatical beliefs. With some of the other ideas being proposed, there might be some who wouldn't want to leave.

Having our volunteers ready to go on the ship indicates previous communication with the aliens who proposed the trip for earthlings to the alien planet and more should have been done with this subplot it could have been expanded.

Gotcha, but I also like that we're supposed to guess at it - almost as if they'd gotten a reply to Voyager. It gives the audience credit - rare commodity in film.

@@roquefortfiles All the volunteers were prepared to go on the alien ship. Neary had to be gotten rid of he would have blabbed to the TV News had he stayed on earth. LaCombe wanted Neary to go on the trip to satisfy the curiosity Neary had he was compelled to go even abandoning his wife and kids. But the Government Men were happy to see Neary go to another galaxy they got rid of him the easy way.
