A massive cleanup operation is underway in Baltimore to remove the wreckage after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Tuesday. The Navy is providing at least four cranes - including the largest crane on the Eastern Seaboard - to help with the efforts.

I wasn't even home (in Baltimore) but when I got back in town Thursday and saw the exit for the Key Bridge closed and blocked off, it felt so unreal. Even on Google maps it says temporarily closed. Seeing the bridge gone is crazy

There needs to be an investigation first. Why is this so difficult for people to understand? Investigation first, then fault is assigned. Then they are sued. There's probably already suits being filed against them. Get in line. The government will want their money first! Then anyone physically or economically harmed by the accident. Class action suit.

Insurance/Sueing for damages for something like this takes a LONG time and is not garrentied in US courts. It is a major port and highway and needs to be cleaned and fixed immediately and can't wait for an insurance payout when thousands of jobs are on the line and causing major shipping lane disruptions.

Because no ship is insured for a $2 billion dollar bridge collision. That's why. This collision will impact insurance rates on vessels from now on.

first it would have to go through litigation which could take years eventually the insurance company will pay for it but you have to understand just who was in charge of the boat at that time that would be the harbour pilot WHO is not employed by the company who owns the boat and since this KEY bridge (say so right in the name) is so instrumental to the GDP of 'murika its been decided that the gov pay the bills associated

Because insurance companies take a long time to pay out, but in order for Baltimore's economy to function they need to to be built back as soon as possible. When the insurance company eventually does pay I believe that it will sorta "cancel out" the taxpayers dollars.

The ship is insured by Britannia Protection and Indemnity Club and they will have to pay the City and people who died. That will probably have to be after the clearing of Debris is done and the actual cost it took for the Crane and the workers is done in addition to the price to rebuild is quoted. The expected pay out by that Club will be about $1.2 Billion when its all said and done.

If you ever did insurance claims then you’ll understand that it takes weeks to months to process. And there’s a high likelihood that this specific claim will be contested in the courts to delay payment. Maryland also is losing billions in revenue and is endangering tens of thousands of jobs that depend on the port being up and running. Not to mention the bridge is apart of the interstate system. To prevent more loss of economic activity and potential layoffs the government is scrambling to rebuild the bridge. A good analogy of this is someone breaking your walls in your house from the outside. You will of course submit an insurance claim for the other person to pay but in the meantime you need to rebuild the wall ASAP to prevent anyone or anything from getting in. You will get paid in the end but you can’t wait for insurance and legal battles to end to fix your house.

Insurance from the shipping company "may" pay out, but only to a point and could take years. This bridge collapse also could have been prevented if Baltimore upgraded the bridge to moden standards and put ballards in front of the bridge pillers but decided againced it as far as I could tell. It is a major port and roadway that needs to be fixed immediately and can't wait for insurance payout.

@MrTk6969 I mean modern bridges have bollards in front of the pillers so ships hit that instead of the bridge. Most major bridges have built after the 1980s have them since a previous ship crash that killed 60 people back then, but the city never installed them due to them not believing the cost of the ballads was necessary because the risk of an accident is so rare.

@arcadeportal32 well that's the problem because the bridge isn't even the city. It connects Anne arundel and baltimore counties. The state of MD own the bridge. Also the key bridge basically splits the port into 2 sections so it really doesn't have that many ships going under it. If any money gets spent on upgrading a bridge it will be the bay bridge since any and all port traffic will have to pass under not 1 but 2 ( an east and west span) bridges that are each over 5 miles long. And about 200 feet high. From road surface to water .

The ship was trying its best not to hit the bridge , im sure the driver of the barge was in panic mode trying everything he can to steer the boat not to hit the bridge , even if a horn went off, you think the workers are going start running ? A report from credit rating agency Morningstar DBRS predicts the collapse could become the most expensive marine insured loss in history, surpassing the record of about $1.5 billion held by the 2012 shipwreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off Italy. Just like the titanic disaster, I'm betting after this disaster, they will enact maritime laws requiring all ships to be under tug boat control when they are going under bridges. We can't afford this to happen again. As far as cleaning up the mess, I’d think maybe taking off chunks with cutting torches. I don’t have a clue how they would get the stuff off the bottom.

I read that tug boats released the ship after it was clear of the port. It seemed like all was well. I believe it had a U.S. pilot still on board. (2 pilots.). Local. or special pilots must be on board while maneuvering within US waters.

They were under tug boat escort, but it left before it entered under the bridge, which I understand was a no no. Human error is what caused this.

@@dianealbrecht496 Not a no no. All they were required to have was the pilot. The bridge was very badly constructed; there should have been reinforcements round the bridge to protect it. This has been known since at least the Tampa bridge disaster. No excuses.

A problem which will likely require computer modeling to examine & document the current stress transfers which keeps supporting it in its present configuration, in order to safely disassemble and remove it. Can't just "chop it up", especially tricky will be the sections collapsed in the deep water shipping channel, and given the environment of where it is, safe work of this nature will be have to be restricted to stable weather conditions as well . . . a real mess.

I think its kind of like a rescue of someone lost in the woods. Is it their fault for being there? Yes. Is it their fault they got lost? Kind of. Was that their intention? Probably not. Their rescue will be paid for as long as there is no evidence of it having been done intentionally or frivilously. This whole thing will go to court and be there for years, that's where it will be determined if the company did something wrong. Just having a ship lose control due to a loss of power isn't necessarily a crime, there maybe be negligence at play here, and generally a lot of factors that will only mean delays in rebuilding. Having a cost of repairs is also really handy when you're going to court as it shows just how much the damages cost.

Common sense is way too simple in a complex and messy world. The bridge was very poorly protected against a collision, and that may be a factor. This will take years to negotiate and litigate.

A) It was not 3 trillion, but 1 trillion; and B) that's to be spent over 10 years, so they are spending $100 million a year for the next decade. That's peanuts for a country the size of America and the amount of infrastructure it has that needs maintaining especially when you consider America spends $900 million a year on military.

I'm surprised we haven't heard about them trying to get the VB10,000 heavy lift twin gantry catamaran that can lift 7500 tons, yes 7500 tons! That's what was used to lift the large pieces of the Golden Ray auto carrier that capsized in St. Simons Sound, Georgia in 2019... These cranes they've got in Baltimore are small compared to it

When the 35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed the new bridge opened 14 months later. I don't know the length of this bridge, but I offer what I know of the 35W bridge in Minneapolis as a means to give some reference for the rebuilding of you lost transportation asset.

was pieace of shieeet.. i took it few times , 10 years ago. scariest bridge to drive thru in entire america. WAS! glad it is gone. 2 narrow lanes, very sharp climb angle, which included curve too ,, they built it in 1976 using 19 century technology , and bridge was for port heavy truck traffic. with little hit from the boat it simple jumped off the pillars and we see where it is. That bridge on that hway should have looked like Verrazano bridge or GW Washington in NY> not that .. Another shieatty bridge of that kind is Bay bridge to Annapolis . also in MD not far from this fallen Key bridge. If you ever have a chance take it and you will understand what im talking .

@@zevlove612 We have 2 of these bridge designs here in Oregon. The Longview bridge was emergency closed last year due to drivers feeling the bridge move & shake under them.Inspectors found several critically broken parts!! The inspectors were amazed that the bridge had not failed. Did not like crossing either 1 over the Columbia river. Can`t swim very well!

That's a ugly bridge I've seen far better looking Bridges that are built way better that bridge design was the worst. Me I would not rebuild the bridge I'd make it a tunnel bridge under the water. There won't be any problems ever again, and all ships can move through there much faster without the worry of hitting anything. Tunnel bridge costs more funds though. I see it worth the extra cost upkeep for a tunnel over a bridge is about the same as well. Either way it's 5-7 years to rebuild a bridge so people will have to deal with going the long way around for quite a while.

Because bridges are not tunnels. The construction costs of the Queensferry Crossing (Edinburgh Scotland UK) was £1.35 billion (1,641,378,700.00 United States Dollar). This bridge is a similar length and was completed in 2017.

1,000 ton crane is quite IMPRESSIVE! I’ve worked with 400 ton cranes and they are impressive. The biggest problem is getting the loads centered. There is no measuring. You can guesstimate but fine tuning will be needed. But the worst part is the MEN that didn’t come home and passed away.😞

The federal government will sue the insurance company of the ship that did this and eventually recoup the money which will be credited back to the federal government, but that process will involve litigation that will take some time, so we need to help now and recoup that money as that process plays out.

To give you a little glimps into Marine Insurance : Ship is insured in two tiers ... by P&I (Protection and indemnity) which covers 25% of specific risks ... and H & M (Hull and machinery) covering remaining 75% of risks . Then there is cargo insurance , each cargo owner has own cargo insured for maritime risks. This case will be a "Long and winding road" ..... before any claim is set , the legal representatives of all parties involved must collect constructive evidence. Because the cargo insurers will probably claim damages to cargoes/goods and delay in contractual delivery in some cases a total loss of goods. Take in consideration other losses i.e. commercial loss to the Baltimore container terminals because of inoperative water ways , charterers Maersk various losses and so on and so forth . Long story short : the smelly solids will hit the fan big style.

The MV Dali was also cited for issues with their Auxillary Machinery by port authorities in Chile back in June. I think they have to figure out what the problem was before you can decide who is going to be suing whom. I'm sure they'll dredge as necessary, since that's something they already do regularly in order to maintain the shipping lanes...

Once someone can be blamed that someone's insurance will refund all the costs made by the government (tax payers). The tax payers will not receive any money because you didn't pay any extra tax to allow the government to pay for this as they reserve money for these things in the emergency response fund which is used in cases like this (and natural disasters).

When they rebuilt the Tappan Zee Bridge on the Hudson (NY) they used a much larger crane called the East Coast Heavy Lift. It was much larger larger than the crane on site in Baltimore. They're gonna need more Heavy Lift cranes for this job.

Now I could be wrong, but I pretty distinctly remember the governor saying “Opening the shipping channel is priority #2, only behind the rescue operation. So far they’ve done the rescue as best as possible. They’ve cleared a non-shipping channel, a second non shipping channel, a third area not in the shipping channel. When exactly does the TOP clean up priority begin? The shipping channel has already been moved back to priority #4 apparently. We at the port are OUT of work. Very soon the economic impact is going to touch the citizens. Nothing is coming in, and nothing is going out. At least make whatever effort you apply be toward the shipping channel.

Before shouting insurance company please understand that the investigation must first establish WHO was responsible for this disaster… if it turns out it was a port employee that piloted the ship to disaster what then? What if there was contributing blame on part of different actors eg vessel mulfunctioned plus pilot and captain error…

60 million was giving as a down payment from the federal government. It will cost 400 million to 1 billion to build a new bridge. Our economy is hurting even when many cargos are crossing over! They are not building a new bridge yet. They are clearing debris which is blocking the divers from getting the other 4 men. They have not issued a contract to design the new bridge. In addition to the debris in the water there is some debris on the land. They are trying to get the port open so that functionality can resume.

@@TrueFactsDrop they are a long, long, long way from rebuilding. Months and months of clean first. And while the clean up is going on the investigation is also going on. NTSB said it usually takes between one to two years to investigate. It might be investigated in segments, like do as much on the ship before it's moved. But they also need to investigate the fuel with samples being taken from the ship and also the supplier. They also need to see if any other ships had problems with the fuel, including communicating with ships who left earlier in the day. They have to investigate the bridge debris in the water. This is much harder to do.

Too many agency's, it will take them weeks just to agree on where to have lunch ! They need one manager and several asst's. The priority after the men are recovered should be to get the channel open. That way shipping can resume.Tug boats stationed to assist ships thru the area of the bridge. Until the log jam is relieved. In the mean time as much shipping that can be absorbed elsewhere should be encouraged. What trucking that used that section of 695 will have to be rerouted on the western side of 695. Hopefully the rebuilding will take into accoont future traffic needs of not only the vehicular traffic but also possible rail line over and larger ships under.

@@kapekodbob where the ships pass is a 700 foot wide area. they even said some ships only have a 1-2 feet of clearence over the bottom of the water, so it's mandatory to clear everything away or some bigger ship might hit debris left there. they already started work, cutting the bridge. the army enginners already scanned most of the area and are calculating what to cut and where to make pieces small enough that the cranes can lift. they have divers in water almost non-stop. the coast guard is trying to see if a smaller passage can be open for smaller ships/boats before the main channel is cleared of debris and Dali ship. you should listen to what the actual people doing the work are saying and not the empty talk of politicians. there's this and other clips which mentioned all they're doing.

It doesn't have to take years to rebuild, The new spans do not have to be steel. They could be prefab reinforced concrete sections made along the shore, towed in on barges, and lifted in place. Also, sections of the collapsed spans should be partially floated by launch airbags and towed out of the way for demolition.

I was a federal manager for 35 years, as a physical scientist, and have lost track of the press conferences and interviews I conducted to inform the public about our projects. FYI the work was ocean surveying a mapping which was called to the front line every time a ship sank (Exxon Valdez), an airplane crashed, (Flight 800, Long Island Sound) or a ship collided with a bridge (Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Tampa Bay, 35 dead). There was no one above me who knew more about the work of investigating a ship channel to determine if it was safe to use by large commercial shipping, certainly no politician who were generally looked upon as bad jokes. I took this work seriously and never even considered that talking to the public was a distraction, a burden, or a task left to others. Taxpayers paid me and deserved to know. When there was no disaster I returned to the mundane work of creating navigation products for use by the maritime community. I feel confident I know what I'm talking about.

Because no ship is insured for a $2 billion dollar bridge collision. But that will change real quick. Insurance rates for container ships will skyrocket by April 1st. LOL

@@gregorylyon1004 Considering the value of the ship is likely in the 10's of Millions, and the value of the cargo can easily reach in the 100's of millions. I think the coverage might be there to at least pay for some of this.. I guess it depends on what sort of insurance the ship and the company operating the ship have.

Cleaning up the wreckage is critical and will be done in a week or two, the port and shipping can be restored. The bridge is NOT critical, it is a minor convenience that saves trucks 30-45 minutes of driving time and a total of about $10.

Maybe they can build temporary ports on the outer banks of the river,just so cargo ships can unload and supply chain can keep moving. Just a possibility.

Would someone report on WHY the construction workers were at that location? If a Mayday call went out early enough the have traffic stopped on the bridge, then the word was out that the Zamboni was coming. Who’s responsible for either not getting the message to them or ordering them to stay put? How much time went by between the Mayday call and the collation? None of the many report I’ve seen address these questions. Happy to receive links to related articles and videos if anyone knows of any. Thanks

The last traffic went through just seconds before the ship hit the bridge. You can hear in the records that the police officer is saying to his colleague who is on the way that there are construction workers on the bridge and that he will drive there as soon as his colleague is there to keep traffic off followed a second later by the words the bridge is down. There was just not enough time and it is a miracle that two of them are alive.

+ One way to secure “LALI” from flipping sideways loosing all cargo is to chain or strap tight 2 ( or more ) long vessels ; 90 degrees ; one on each side of the LALI ( parallel to where the former bridge was ) , maybe towards the third rear part of LALI using ( 4 or ) 6 chains each vessel : 3 on top & 3 on bottom that divers would weld D hooks for … They could be used for towing it later . Preferably done before touching debris on the ship .

This was done intentionally.they got to conclusion that this was an accident less than 24 hours yet we don’t know the history of the crew we don’t know any details about technical issues and if you watch the video they had enough time to get control of the wheel and why there’s no emergency in case when the power goes off ? And how come no one is get arrested for it

The government will cover the cost in the short term to make sure it’s rebuilt as quickly as possible. The government will be reimbursed when the insurance company and any other liable party pays out. Please thing about things for more than 5 seconds. 🤦🏻‍♂🤦🏻‍♂🤦🏻‍♂

Well the one responsible is the refining fuel plant that supplied the fuel for said ship. The fuel was bad and they had to purge the bad fuel to get the engine restarted.
