An old cop once told me about this incident from his rookie days. He and his training officer had to "subdue" some agggressive thugs. So he starts fighting one guy -- they punch and wrestle, bounce off a wall and a car, roll on the ground, etc. Finally, he gets the guy cuffed and stands up - gasping, cut, bruised, one sleeve torn off. Looks over at his T.O. ... and the older, smaller cop is leaning against a wall smoking a cigarette, cuffed thug at his feet. "Why didn't you use your stick, boy?"

This is good stuff- I like using a six foot bo staff when I’m hiking out in the woods but more and more I’m gravitating to a five foot stick for woods AND city walking. I have a 60” length of oak I use for the city but I will be upgrading to hickory soon👍🏻

Hi, I’m watching this from my home in Dublin, Ireland. As an Irish man every home normally has 1 or 2 near the door. It’s called the Irish dreamer…because if your unlucky enough to have it give you a kiss then your off to dreamland. Slainte. 🇮🇪😎

Donnybrook Fair was notorious about 200 years ago. Always a riot , always rough, always great fun . It's now a posh suburb of dublin . 2 million dollars for a house there . The bank will hurt you more than any shilellagh can.

Thanks for the video. Years ago, I did a bit of flat-water kayaking. I ended up taking two courses in kayaking techniques. Much of the instruction was in self-rescue, but they talked about some regular paddling issues. One point the instructor made is that a kayaker should always paddle from the core. She said that all of the power needs to come from the abdominal muscles with some coming from the lats for stability.

Hi Matt. Sorry i missed class just by a few minutes. Getting more sleep to help shake this bug. It's amazing how hard the blackthorn shillelagh can strike, due to the density of the wood making it so hard but deceptively light, and not relying on weight. Of the woods hickory oak and blackthorn, for the diameter size, i believe shillelagh strikes the hardest and is the most durability. Each type of wood has its strength, but in my humble opinion, blackthorn seems to have an advantage over the others for its size. Doug.

I have one of those. They are heavy, but I enjoy walking with mine sometimes. The one I have has prominent knobs to simulate the branch stems, and they are too prominent to allow one to use many of the techniques. That would still be effective for hitting an attacker, particularly a four-legged attacker.

As a retired police officer, in my opinion, the only issue a person might face with the use of a walking stick, could be the manner in which it is made and how it is used. Example, a baseball bat. If a person has a bat laying on the front seat of his car by itself, and has to use it for self defense, then issues might be raised. But if the bat is going through the wrist strap of a baseball glove, laying on the vehicle's rear seat, then the perception of its use is playing baseball. The bottom line is what is an item designed for, how was it used, and the intent of the user.

@@jimmybutler3728 Jimmy, many times people get their perception of the judicial system is by watching to much tv. In my state, most people aren't aware that if a person files a civil suit against an officer for false arrest and loses, the officer in turn could counter sue the person for malicious prosecution against the officer.
