I met Lyle when he was 16 at the Shell Lake Wisconsin jazz camp. Played in the UWEC jazz 1 and a 7 piece rock band called Community for a few years. He then went to NTS via a short stint in Green Bay. A dear friend and always an amazing talent. Pretty good trumpet player as will. Sad day.

Un dono. Questo brano è un dono! Ho la pelle d'oca. Penso all'artista, Unico. Ma rifletto sull'uomo, Grande! quando con la sua musica riesce a "perforarti" l'anima facendoti viaggiare al suo interno, Il talento si unisce ad una grande sensibilità. Grazie Lyle per aver visitato il nostro pianeta. A gift. This song is a wonderful gift! I'm shivering. I think of the artist,Unique. But I reflect on the man, Great! when with his music he manages to "perforate" your soul making you travel within it, talent joins a great sensitivity. Thank you Lyle for visiting our planet.

Lyle, I never found more beauty in compositions, than in yours. There are MANY artists out there, some of them GREAT, in a musical way. But, please excuse, that I find your musical heart as the greatest under our sun. It shifts the meaning of music into a soul like realm. Which is, what all musicians try to achieve, but only a view do. And under those view, you are my master. You did so unbelievably well.... As long as I exist, you are alive, too... That is my promise to you... I will tell everyone, who was the guy which filled my eyes with tears, because of musical beauty. And by knowing, that I will never say that to another person in my life, again: Thank you, Lyle, for EVER and a day!

...It is my humble belief that The Great Power selects certain souls to be amongst us for a specific purpose...These Souls act as beacons for us...We go torward them to learn of Life...We seek Love, Happiness, Kindness, Generosity, Compassion and Understanding of why we are here in this Life...Perfection is beyond our ability as a Human Being...Striving for it is in our Soul...Lyle Mays was one of the Souls sent here with such a marvelous purpose...This piece of music could only have been created with Love and Purpose...In in are many folds of Life...Each containing some type of explanation...These souls are, generally, found in the Arts...This is where we go to find explanations and definitions of the mysteries that confront us throughout Life...These Arts allow a "Oneness" with ourself...We need nothing more than what they present to us...I am certain that Lyle had no concept of the belief I present here...That is understandable because what he did, he felt, was exactly what he was supposed to do...People, as they should, applaud his talent, mastery and innovation...I prefer to be thankful for the insights of LIfe I have gleaned through his music...The Soul of Lyle is now Home...He has completed his task...He has opened doors and shed light on many things that perplex us...The contemporary World (November 2022) is a harsh place...Seemingly devoid of all the facets which we seek...History is replete with such times...I think, however, that there were Souls tasked with being beacons throughout History...Souls who acted for us through their ability to show us beauty...Human development is a slow, slow process...Two steps forward...Three steps back...What these beacons have done is to give us hope, strength and resilience in developing ourself...What we call Life goes on and on...Love and Understanding have no limits nor boundaries...Death is merely a point in an endless journey of development...I learned certain aspects of Life as a nineteen year old Army Infantry Lieutenant in Vietnam...Badly wounded in the late Spring of '68...Fourteen months in the hospital getting put back together...I am a Seeker who looks to understand something of this amazement called Life...These beacons, such as Lyle, refresh us and push us forward in our Journey...So much beauty in such an act...It is the beauty which eludes us...We think it is one thing...I think it is everything..."...I am certain of nothing...Except the holiness of the Heart's affections...And the truth of the Imagination..."(Keats)... Hi, I know its been 4 years since you left a comment on Lyle Mays, Close to Home, song but your comment truly hit "home". I have followed the Pat Metheny Group since I first saw them at Northwestern College in Evanston, IL back in 1979. The white album is my favorite. Having played keyboards, I tried to emulate San Lorenzo. It took quite a few years for me to comprehend (barely) the incredible talent in Lyle and his phenomenal keyboard abilities. I agree with you, a gift from God. In the early years I really felt there was a spirituality to both Pat and Lyle in both their playing and solo projects. For me, Close to Home, checks of the box. In 1989, I became a born again Christian in Jesus Christ. I used to pray for Pat Metheny all the time. His closest apparent assimilation was when he came out with his album Missouri Sky with Charlie Haden. Charlie's son, Joshua, wrote a song called "Spiritual" and was the last song on the album. He dedicated it to Jesus. Sadly, around 2010 and later, Pat railed against Jesus and Christianity. He is at best an agnostic. I know Lyle had Christian influence as he played organ at the church his parents went to when he grew up in Wisconsin. However, I had the opportunity to listen to an interview he gave with Richard Niles and it seemed he expressed disdain for anything related to faith. Of course, I was so saddened when he passed. But all will. It's just a question of time. However, the most important thing to know is where will we pass to after physical death. Jesus has not only the answer but He is the answer. Blessings!

An incredible musician, I had the pleasure to meet him once at the Miami Night Center back in 86 during a tour with the Pat Metheny Group. I congratulated him on his first solo album which it meant so much to me. At the time, I was having a hard time trying to find my way, but there was this special music and especially this song "Close To Home," although it didn't have words, it still had some melancholic melody that was so beautiful... and it did opened up my mind and soul where I was able to go deep within myself and allowed me to mediate. At the end of the concert all of them came out and before going to Pat, I went straight to Lyle since I wanted to tell him what his album meant to me. He was pleased to find that there actually were people who really paid attention to his composing and playing; a real nice guy. One of the most precious things about Lyle was his incredible crystal sense of melody..... trait impossible to replicate which is why is so special. R.I.P Lyle, I will always remember you and your music.....it really changed the way I listen to music.

A composition like this can only emanate from a highly evolved spirit. Lyle was that type of being. A near flawless musician, composer and arranger that always had "the magic" at his command. And command of the instrument he had. I remember thinking "who is this guy?" upon discovering him in 1983 ... We can all be thankful, we got to walk the Earth at the same time he did.
