It's usually just a few instructions for the CPU to do. P@r@m3d!© his list is how a computer will store data in decreasing importance and speed. The cpu caches are notoriously small though. In gaming i can say this regarding vram, ram and hdds. A game stores info in the vram to draw images, the more vram the more detail per frame, if there isnt enough vram it goes for ram, and if that isnt enough then ssd. Thkng is though decreasing speed also dramatically drops fps, and increases time for, well fx just seeing what you have stored on your system. With all lf these it seems there is one golden rule, if you dont have enough then performance is decreased and getting more will help, but if you arent using all of it to begin with getting more wont increase performance

Some open source software is paid for though.. I mean the developers need food on the table. The big difference is that the software code is freely available to everyone who wants to use it. I'm glad you point out the difference between Free and Open software. The GPLv3 (GNU Public Licence version 3) is actually terrible for businesses because of some of the restrictions it imposes onto its users. It's great for small businesses who want their stuff to get out there, but the one big gotcha with GPL is that *it forces you to share the modifications under the same licence*. This is bad because you can't use the modifications for say software used internally in your company and nowhere else, sofware you may or may not want to get leaked. The BSD licence on the other hand doesn't give a shit, you can re-distribute the software with a proprietary licence if you so desire. This is why Apple and Sony can sell their own modified versions of the BSD operating system (PlayStation, OSX, iOS) under a proprietary licence *keeping the rights to their own changes*. So while BSD on its own is FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), Apple's and Sony's variants are not, and that's totally fine. Using the BSD licence over the GPL ensures that you can distribute your software as far and wide as you want *so long as you don't take credit for the parts you didn't change*. The main major advantage of FOSS is the community aspect of it. If you have one small core of developers you have shit you need to make in time, and things sometimes get overlooked, which leads to bugs that may or may not get fixed later. While having a big sprawling community of eager programmers that *constantly* go through and make sure the code is of the very highest quality, you don't get the mess of buggy code that doesn't work properly for months on end because the developers either don't care or don't have time to fix it. If the product's community is big enough, someone will always care.

LayndR I’ll let Linus go more in-depth with it, but the difference between server-side and client-side versions is their purpose. Generally, the server-side software executes operations as specified by one or more client-side instances, then sends the results back to the client-side. Using _Minecraft_ for a simple example, there’s the server software and the client software. The client software is what everyone downloads to play the game; it contains everything that the game needs to run in either single-player or multi-player, including its graphics, sounds, music, game code, ect. The server software contains mainly game code and little else, making it impossible to play the game; that is, unless there is a client to link into it (using the client’s multi-player mode). The server first sends data regarding the world loaded on its side to the client, which interprets and renders it on the client side. When the player inputs actions to the client, this information is sent back to the server, which updates the world accordingly, and relays the changes back to the client. So while the server software hosts the world data, the client acts as a means of interacting with it. The only interface the server software has is a text-based console, which allows commands to be used and returns from events to be viewed but little else. The client gets a fully-rendered viewpoint and standard game interactions, which includes commands for those with such privileges, and allows for normal game-play. Now, this isn’t the only use of server- and client-side software differences and interaction, but it’s the best example I could do.

People keep pointing out that GPL forces you to share modifications as if it's a flaw in the license but it's actually intended. The free software people _don't want_ proprietary consumer software to exist because they think it's bad for society as whole. This is to prevent companies from taking free software and turning it into proprietary software. To make a hardware analogy: Imagine if we lived in a world where most desktop computers were usually rented proprietary computers with AMD CPUs that would be either illegal, strongly discouraged or very difficult to modify. Intel doesn't want to contribute to this market because they think it's bad for society (I'm assuming you guys don't want to live in a world like this). The reason they think it's bad is these computers are often used to spy on users, put people in jail because they tried to modify it, discourages tinkering and programming ETC. So they take a strong stance by having a license on their CPUs that makes it illegal for companies to make prebuilt rented computers with them.

One thing not mentioned was resources. Proprietary software tends to have better monetary resources and you can see the effects of that in Microsoft Office vs. Open Office. I'm not sure if this has changed in the past few years, but Word offers speech to text functionality (last time I checked, Open Office did not) and Excel's trend lines offer multiple options (again, haven't seen this in Open Office). A large community is all well and good, but these people are implementing features in their own time in a fairly chaotic way. When you need a focused team working full time for key features, that's just not going to cut it. Also, why doesn't Firefox have automatic tab groups yet? Internet Explorer has had them for years. Speaking of, the benchmarks I've seen has IE leading the pack (or at least near the front) in terms of memory leakage. That's something that's related to the coding quality, I suppose.

I would say Open source, like free software, is a philosophy too - Many linux distributions are based on entirely open source software mainly on principle. Archlinux and Gentoo can download and compile the source code of everything needed to run specifically to your system optimizing for your specific processor using custom compilation flags. The computer scientists I know (and myself) will be quite upset if they are required to have any kind of proprietary software installed (maybe other than windows, that might be fair enough, sometimes, however NOT microsoft office!).

There are some errors in here. Closed source software does not have to be proprietary, and open source software can be proprietary. For a project to be open source (or "free"/"libre" as Richard Stallman loves to call it) you have to be able to study, modify, and redistribute the source code. That requires you to have access to the source code, of course. However there are NO requirements on price, so "free" software (please let this saying die, and just say open source) should not be confused as free as in beer, but "free as in freedom". So, closed source software should not be confused with proprietary. "Free software" is not the same as gratis software. Free software is equal to open source software (but saying that makes Richard Stallman and his followers angry).

You actually are incorrect. At the very least, you are not using the industry-standard definition of the terms, a.k.a. you are making up your own definitions. All closed source software are proprietary, though not all proprietary software are closed source. You are partially correct though, that there are source-available software that are proprietary. The definition of "Open source" and "Free software" are defined by "Open Source Initiative" and "Free Software Foundation" respectively. While there are a lot of overlaps, they are not all the same and there are licenses that have been judged acceptable by one that are rejected by the other. Neither proprietary, open source, or free software talks about price. Any of them can be gratis or paid.

Although Eric doesn't closely attach himself to the movement since he wanted the movement to have a life of its own. He is the one who developed the daemon that sits next to applications on devices handing them location data from the gps. He worked with the .png format. Not too long ago he got a computer upgrade tested and built by Tek Syndicate and before that computer he was doing a lot of work on a core 2 duo. You people should be contributing to open source. If you need motivation to get started then go and install linux in dual boot. TekLinux will help you get started.

Each has its pros can cons. Gimp is not as powerful as photroshop, requires many plug ins to be installed to get some similar options but it costs nothing compared to $1000. Firefox went downhill since they started to pump out a new version every few months so they could compete with chrome, then they gave us "Australius" where they limit the point of firefox, choice to mod things.

Think of bandwidth as a road. If 500 card need to get from city A to city B, a 4 lane road would be significantly better at it than a one lane road. Bandwidth is the same thing, where a larger bandwidth (wider road) allows more information (cars) to travel quicker to its destination.

Marios Sklavenitis Bandwidth? Not sure what can be misunderstood - you're probably looking at a "internet connection as Fast as Possible" since there isn't much to explain. Bandwidth is simply the amount of data you're pulling or pushing in bits per second - traversal is in bits, storage is in bytes. Since it's bits, you need 8 bits for a byte. 20 megabits download, (20/8 = 2.5MBps) (megaBYTES) theoretical maximum. 2megabits up is (2/8 = 0.25MBps) or 250 kiloBYTES per second.

Marios Sklavenitis if you mean the memory bandwidth as in the bandwidth between the memory and the gpu then it is very important when running high resolutions as this is the pipeline from which textures go from the memory to the gpu so the faster it can get them to the gpu the more frames it can render. for PCIE bandwidth as p@r@m3d! said its not so important (although i think that may change as the internal memory bandwitdh that i was describing before starts to increase now HBM has come around with its 512GB/s memory speeds which i think will easily reach 1TB/s either in HBM2 or HBM3.

faissialoo Try Krita If I read right Gimp has stopped being updated and krita has pretty much the same functionality from what I've seen. (It is also free and open source)

No mention of how closed source software can contain (not always legally) and learn from open source software? The way I see it, closed source is usually better quality, especially when they have open source competition, there are exceptions to that though. Although open source is always easier to tweak however you want it provided you know a bit of what you are doing so has much more potential than closed source.

Your explanation is wrong. I will mention two very clear errors: 1) Neither "Free Software" as defined by the Free Software Foundation nor Open Source as defined by the Open Source Initiative require the software to be free of charge. On the contrary, both explicitly state that commercialization / sale is a right which cannot be taken - if you were forbidden to sell it, it would be neither Free Software nor Open Source. There are well-known examples of open-source software which is sold. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is one such example. Of course, the problem is that once you sell it once, you cannot possibly prevent the buyer from offering it for free. Red Hat works around it by keeping the code open-source but their binaries proprietary. You can recompile all of it and distribute it for free to others, sure, and that's what Scientific Linux and CentOS do, but you would not have Red Hat's brandies and warranties. 2) "Closed-source" is not the opposite of "Open Source". That happens because Open Source is a formal definition with 10 requirements. Closed source however is an informal expression which can mean anything and at face value could mean just that the code is not available. So you could have something which is not closed source (because the code is available somehow) but also not Open Source (because it does not allow modification or redistribution without permission).

OSS does NOT need to be free of charge. There is OSS out there which you have to pay for! The only things which OSS has to follow are listed on the website of the open source initiative. Free as in freedom not free as in free beer.
