And meanwhile I'm like... so do the players get to make a save, roll a check, or have any agency at all? No? Then it's just a GM playing with themselves. It's good entertainment but poor play.
@feral_orc Жыл бұрын
@@randomkaycomic Player engagement does not equal dice rolls. And what happens in these games when your character goes insane? Oh yeah, the GM controls them! It's almost like he's playing the game properly! What would you have done if you want to emphasize the worsening state of your mental capacity and the doubt that what you're seeing or doing is even real? Doesn't sound like you would describe weird visions to people anyway, those aren't good play

I'm going to have to stick to my guns on this. I go more into depth in my other comments on why it was bad and ways it could have been better. The simple fact is that the big cool twist, while entertaining, was not earned. Apparently it's something in the module that just happens. However it's up to the GM to elevate the subject matter. The way it was done from a gameplay perspective is ham-fisted and sloppy. What the characters agreed to do was go in, armed, knowing that they were going to have to kill and might not return. Instead they got literally stabbed in the back with no foreshadowing, a freaking 1 in a clutch roll wasn't honored, and they got all of their stuff taken away with zero ability to fight back. There are much better ways to get the same result.

Joe the way you delivered that twist, incredibly well done, especially after the silliness of the early part of the episode to pivot into this psychological horror. Really well done, hats off to you!

When your player gets a revelation so big that they have to turn away from the screen and stare into space, you know it was a good episode.
@jmarquiso Жыл бұрын
Okay he tied the false memories with the bonding scenes, thats why it works to me. Its reflective of choices made in those scenes, a result of visiting at night, foreshadowed by the forst night rooms sequence. That said it *is always* a risky move when taking agency from players, but the players and handler have to buy into the moment. It works for tye kind of horror this game is.

That, or he was just trying to avoid them spending 3 episodes doing nothing before actually getting there. It's often a delicate balance between not railroading and avoiding wasting a ton of time. Often when the GM says "Is there anything else you want to do?" the players think that means they've missed something or NEED to do something and can't figure out what so they just start aimlessly mucking around trying to figure out what they've missed.

As a moderately religious person from a hyper-religious family, I generally have no problem separating my beliefs from fantasy fiction, RPGs, etc. I've also got a thick skin for people mocking or berating my beliefs, which is how I've gotten through some of the banter on a few of the Patreon podcasts. I like to call it "having a sense of humor." But I'm also considered incredibly liberal by most of my family because of my belief in individual freedom and LGBT rights. "Judge not lest you be judged," as the good book says. There are probably some more deeply religious folks that get bugged by those kinds of things though, but I doubt they stick around for long.

So I have now witnessed that scene. Everyone who has watched this episode knows which one I am talking about. Cinematically and from a story perspective I LOVED it. Joe nails it. Truly. So then I start looking at it from a players perspective. How I would have liked it. I think right then I wouldnt have liked it since I lost so much control of my character. Not so much the memory change that I would have been okay with the thing I would have had more problem with are the orderlies that I couldnt resist them and have chances to resist the "poison" that I get. The flow is just so good though and It wouldnt have been as good if there were dice rolls involved. I understand the critique but I am in two minds about it. Still fantastic scene from Joe though and how the players roll with it.
