Sweden's Lisa Norden and Switzerland's Nicola Spirig set almost identical times as they entered the final stage of the 3 sport event, but who would be crowned Olympic champion in one of the closest finishes in Olympic history.

How can you not cry watching this. Unbelievable tenacity, unbelievable determination, unbelievable focus, unbelievable finish. So inspired.

Only one camera was working, the other one malfunctioned. The shot is bad as Spirig is on the far side of the shot and it the doesn't really make it clear who won. Maybe the judgement was correct, maybe not. Too many question marks for it to be acceptable in an olympic race. In my mind they should have shared the gold.

What is the rule on a photo finish: a) the first to cross the finish line with any part of the body, i.e., a foot or a hand? b) the first one to cross the finish line with his/her torso? or 3) the first one to cross the finish line with hs/her whole body?

I think that the winer was Norden!!!

When Spirig started to touch the tape, Norden was still about 25 cm away. So I do not think that Norden can be the clear winner.

This finish was all-forced, I hate that now in triathlon you can cycle in big bunchs. That just sucks!

***** With all respect, Diego, all types of triathlon are already two-thirds draft legal; the swim and, to a lesser degree, on the run. It's unrealistic to expect a mass swim start (where most athletes are going at about the same speed) to produce sufficient time gaps to facilitate a cycling time trial. Excellent cyclists still have the advantage of about half race time being spent on their discipline - actually swimmers have more of a cause to say the format sucks, with only approx 15% of the race being spent in the water!

Niall D I know that the "water draft" works quite a lot and that the swimming is usually the less important part. That's why I'd love to see the order being switched between events. Why not start running? Why not start cycling? Why not finish cycling?

Then swim-bike-run order was only set in 1974. Looking back in history, there was a French race in 1920 often described as the first triathlon that went Run-Bike-Swim. Bike last would be interesting, it might encourage attacking or bunch sprints. No reason you couldn't organise your own event, start a new tradition yourself! ;-)
