You cannot use his gold medals to compare him to other athletes. For other sports, it's only possible to win ONE medal per Olympics. A boxer, a weightlifter, or judo athlete can only win one medal per Olympics, so it's unfair to compare them to Phelps. So let's just say that Phelps is the most decorated Olympic swimmer and leave it at that.
@satin76593 ай бұрын
@@user-sg8kq7ii3ywhile I agree it's unfair to compare his number of golds, this has a severe lacking of how swimming works, it's like a boxer entering karate, wrestling and boxing and winning gold in all 3, just like Usain Bolt did with the 100, 200 and 4x100. Discounting his accomplishments because he can enter so many events and win is a ridiculous concept
@user-sg8kq7ii3y3 ай бұрын
@@satin7659 No it isn't a ridiculous concept. Wrestling and boxing require COMPLETELY different skillsets. How many swim strokes does Phelps compete in? Three? Four? Well, all he's doing is doing the same strokes in different distances and different formats (team relays). So you are incorrect. That would NOT be like a boxer entering karate, wrestling, etc. What Phelps has done is like a boxer entering a boxing competition where he competes in 1-min rounds; 2-min rounds; 4-min rounds, a boxing tag team match, etc. It's the SAME SPORT, but Phelps is simply doing different strokes, different distances, and different formats (medleys). And it's these different strokes, different distances, and different formats THAT ALLOW HIM to win so many medals in a single Olympics! It's because there are so many different variations that one can compete in the sport of swimming. Like I said: Phelps is the greatest Olympic swimmer of all time, but not the greatest Olympian of all time. Please don't try to argue this any further because you sound ridiculous. Trying to compare and somehow equalize swimming to boxing, judo, marathon running, figure skating, volleyball, basketball, etc., just do you can say one athlete is the GOAT is asinine.
@satin76593 ай бұрын
@@user-sg8kq7ii3y im not even arguing he's the greatest Olympian of all time, you just lack knowledge of swimming, most swimmers specialize in one of the 5 main categories, sure I over exaggerated with the boxing but it was for a point, what he does would be more akin to Usain Bolt also being the best 100 and 200 meter hurdler, if it was so easy for the best swimmers people to just enter every stroke they would. If it's so simple as he can just enter more distances why didn't he do the 800m and 1600m. They may be the "same sport" but they aren't the same technique. There's a reason you very rarely see someone in more than one stroke at the Olympics because being the best in more than one is incredibly uncommon
@user-sg8kq7ii3y3 ай бұрын
@@satin7659 Olympic swimming has four main strokes. Judo has close to 70 different throws, each of which is EVERY BIT AS COMPLICATED AND TECHNICAL TO LEARN AS ANY SWIMMING STROKE. And that's not even including the dozens of judo groundwork techniques.

Forget swimming, Phelps is one of the greatest ATHLETES of all-time. One of the intangibles of those that are truly legendary is the manner in which they accomplish their feats; and the way Phelps accomplished his was magical; which brings up another point being that there is a certain air around some athletes of invincibility, Ie. Jordan, Messi, Tyson, Federer etc...and Phelps. This guy reached a status that few athletes do, and deservedly so. To hear him talk about his dedication to his craft helps you to understand why he was so great. And a cannabis user; I knew there was another reason I like him.🏊♂🌳🌳🔥😚💨
