I always took it as all endings are canon, since Kaworu is doomed to repeat them he knows all the other endings of Eva and his goal has always been to help shinji find happiness. Kaworu has watched him his whole life, in all of his lifetimes, he is protective of him.. shinji finally creating a universe free of Evas sets him free and breaks the loops, hence goodbye all of evangelion.
@camrynhamme

Also despite the circumstances of all other eva endings i feel Anno loves them all and feels that each is as good of an ending as the other, i think That you can choose your canon ending, or embrace its final ending. Anno never dimisses NGE or EOE, theres this idea that Anno hates NGE, that hes only in it for the money. I feel Anno finally got to tell the story hes wanted to tell since the start, and as he has found happiness and love in his life so should his chracters, theyve always been a reflection of his emotions anyway. He cares deeply about their journey and their ending, the rebuilds breath passion, Eva could of became souless and serialized go on forever but This story is deserving of an end its just a matter of which one you take. Anno is ready to move on and so should they...

As with all media there is not one specific reading or intention meant to be taken away, otherwise it could easily be addressed and clarified by the creators. Even then, art is always subjective and even if an artist does not intend for a reading to exist the art takes on a life and meaning of its own in the mind of the consumer that they have no control over. Your Evangelion timeline and meaning isn't mine, or this creator's, even if you agree on a lot of points, and neither is any less valid. Makes for good youtube content though, especially if you frame it as if it is objectively the correct interpretation. Here we are contributing to engagement.

@@remygallardo7364 I never claimed it was the definitive explanation. It was the best satisfactory explanation that I could believe. Everything is subjective and the purpose of this video was to help others find their own personal meaning for this film by getting to see my personal breakdown of the lore. I encourage my viewers to disagree with me and create healthy discussions because that's what community is all about.

This is a really solid analysis and sufficiently debunks any arguments made that New Theatrical Edition was a soulless cashgrab. In reality, it was a passion project that Anno could have chosen to rush through to get a quick buck, but instead clearly thought deeply about it and worked hard with his team to execute the vision. As a longtime fan it's been a wild ride, and I'm incredibly happy with how things ended.

Wait, people thought it was a soulless cashgrab….? Really….? It was super clear how much love went into each and every single scene and how everything they did in what I knew was a new timeline was like a redemption arc that spanned the entire life cycle of a universe multiple times. What’s more, Shinji , Asuka, Rei, Kaowru, Misato , Ritsuko, Toji, and Kennsuke are going to be okay.

When Thrice Upon a Time was released I was just overcoming my anxiety and imposter syndrome, faced my dad for my insecurities and finally became the man I wanted myself to be. This coincidence made the movie speak loudly to me: I've accepted my weak inner child at the same time Shinji accepted theirs. I let Evangelion go, and my guilt altogether. This is an excellent, albeit fast, analysis of this incredible finale to my favorite anime series of all time. The only thing I sorta feel differently about is Gendo's realization about Yui and Shinji. I just interpreted a little more simplistically that he couldn't find Yui because she was dead and gone and her spirit was with Shinji/inside of Unit 01 but her memory lived on through their child, Shinji, and he should have spent more time with Shinji as he is a living symbol of their love and the future that Gendo should have invested his time in if he wanted to be "close" to Yui. I just saw it as more of a heartfelt but bittersweet realization that Yui's memory and love lived on through Shinji and Gendo realized it too late that what he was searching for was there the whole time in his son. Fuck do I love this film. Thank you for putting this together too!

Only ONE single little thing that could have made it better: at 34:50 you could have put in One last kiss to play the video out and then let it play on a black screen just a few seconds to get to the chorus. Thank you for your masterful work! I think Neon Genesis Evangelion has always been about a person going through hell, horrors, pain and suffering and despite all that, choosing life. Overcoming all this and coming out at the other end as someone who takes all of lifes issues, sees it, accepts it and embraces it and builds a happy life for themselves. As that is what makes us human. The Rebuild Series to me, is the truest telling of this story. Finished the 4 films recently and felt, very much like Shinji at the end, ready to do just that. And your masterful analysis allows me to spend more time in this place, while "One Last Kiss" is playing on repeat and I can not stop but smile. So thank you, thank Anno and goodbye all of Eva!

What a deep dive into the series - thank you for doing the research and thinking long about what everything means. While I wonder how anyone could possibly even get this much understanding out of it, it does give me hope the iceberg of story is there, even if hidden large. Importantly, the series finally has closure that I can be satisfied with after the first two endings, which never made me happy - one, which made Shinji the biggest jerk to stuff up his one chance to make everything right by wishing for something selfish, and two, which felt like some kind of counselling fantasy success. I could never have expected a happy ending for this series given all the gloom and dystopian apocalyptic babble it evoked, and yet here Anno has managed to do it in a way I can see the plot worked towards believably. He seriously has come a long way in terms of storytelling and pacing. Do I miss elements of the original episodes? Yes, I do - for one, Asuka and Shinji don't get together - but now I can watch them and appreciate parts of the iceberg, or parts that were discarded for the rebuild. There was a rawness about the original series that is lost in the rebuild, which is more commercially friendly while not sacrificiing its soul. But how often does a creator get to (can) redo with carte blanche his life's passion work? Truly a gift.

Guess I’ll just never get it. Every Eva explained video is like a research presentation by a scientist specializing in a really niche field: there’s just too much special terminology and logic for one unlearned to follow along. I _think_ the general premise is people trying to amass objects with the right properties in the right place to get what they want, but what objects with what properties and where and what the people want is left to the realm of fan theorization? Idk. Following that logic I’m at least able to accept everything that happens. Nevertheless, Eva is one of my favorite works of fiction. The sci fi might fly right over my head but the human journeys and arcs are just so real and compelling. And seeing y’all who are able to get a foothold in the lore speculate and build cases for your theories is fun. Keep it up!

Hey man I feel you, it truly is something that was never meant to be analyzed in a logical nor realistic fashion, however for me personally, it made it difficult to find catharsis for the ending of the entire franchise unless I understood why and how everything happened. Maybe this one is too much to digest. I feel like it would have been better to split it up into a series of videos explaining categories on it's own. For example one video connecting the dead sea scrolls (from Eva) to the mesapotemian pantheon one dedicated to explain relationship between Adam, Lilith and Spears and so on. Just as an idea.

I genuinely appreciate you spending time doing your research, writing down your thoughts, distilling them into this video series that breaks all of this down I'm still a bit lost but this is because this is a fire hose of important information, and I have adult ADHD. Implications that they aren't conventional humans (that includes shinji and not only the three girls), implications that they were designed by nerv and that they are all just some sort of puppets, that were created to serve their pre-destined purpose. I would have really love to hear your thoughts on these given information.

I have fallen in-love with this franchise Evangelion from memes, to anime, to analysis. In my own interpretation (or maybe everyone else) of that train station scene Asuka, Rei and Kaworu clothes as an Teenager (maybe just young adult) about to go into their own adventure that will find their own happiness while Shinji already experience enough for his lifetime found that happiness his looking for and that's the reason why his clothing is already what an adult or middle age man would wear. For Mari what I could say an (already matured adult) while Shinji is just (coming to an Adult) but still lack the purpose to move forward and the reason why Mari removed that collar and putting it inside her pocket teaching him to letting go of the past but never forget the past even tho its just a collar at this point in time but Mari knows that it just holding him back and him subconscious finding comfort wearing it. their relationship could be romantical but for me they just close-friends and Mari wants to help Shinji drive to improve himself more while being adult stage of his life and the mater of fact that they are close to each other and not showing any discomfort maybe shows how close are they really are maybe in a future where Shinji and Mari would date each other or already did but its quite funny not many movie just make me smiles looking at the final scene of it until the credit rolls and music start. thank you Evangelion making the most confusing anime I have watch and most satisfying to end with. what a ride am I right?

Haven’t watched the video yet but the original movie and rebuilds are easy to understand if you look at it from afar. Gendo is a depressed man who wants to get his wife back as he believes only she can complete him, he neglects his son. Son is depressed and seeks love because of this. Third impact is wanted by the gov or whatever to merge everyone, Gendo wants to use it to get his wife back. After everyone is merged Rei decides to give Shinji the choice. Shinji then views everyone’s memories and traumas. He comes to terms with his traumas and decides life is worth living despite the hardships. He then resets the world over and over in order to make everyone happy for a happy ending. The rebuilds are one of these resets but he added his Marie to change things. He then gets Gendo to come to terms with the fact his wife is gone so they reset the world one last time to give everyone a happy ending without the Eva’s. He gets with Marie at the end instead of Rei or asuka because it is a new change.

This story is one of the greatest every written, Its a bit confusing on first watch but after some time it starts to make sense. I remember watching Eva when I was a teenager, fresh off other Mecha anime like Gundam and Eureka 7, so I immediately thought I'd be witnessing a story where the shy and awkward MC grows into a confident pilot with a super cool robot by the end of the series run time. Boy was I wrong haha. Anyway I circled back to Eva some years later and rewatched it and I think my life experiences into my early twenties had an effect on how I viewed the story beats, it suddenly made sense. The movies added and the rebuild series added even more, each viewing adding a layer to the story and finally when I got to thrice upon a time, I felt closure. Just like Shinja at the end, I felt like I could finally move on and that in of itself makes it a truly unique story.

I just wish Rei II and Shinji were allowed more scenes together, given how much they were emphasized in the Rebuild saga. But of course, Anno hates the former and her relationship with Shinji so that didn’t happen, instead being dropped with very little in terms of closure, because Anno has nothing but spite for her character.
@svipulvalke9913

It kinda sounds like you're the only one spiteful about it, lol. Somehow, I'm ok with Shinji not having a romantic relationship with part of the soul of his mum. Feels like you missed the point and the train, buddy
@ldragon2515
@ldragon2515 Жыл бұрын
@@svipulvalke9913 It's not just because they didn't get together (frankly, I didn't really see it as incest due to Rei being more of a half-human hybrid). It's more the fact that, despite their relationship being one of the core focuses of the Rebuild saga, they got barely any closure at the end purely thanks to Anno's spite for both Rei and her fanbase.
@icarusfd4155

@@ldragon2515 I never saw anything showing Anno affirming disgust for Rei. But for the sake of discussion, I’ll assume it’s true : original evangelion was a *warning* for otakus against otaku culture by an otaku. None of the Children stereotype were advertised for by Anno, to the contrary. I understand that, the public being fan of what he warned against, disgusted him. And by Shinji being a self projection of Anno, and Anno getting through life and growing through crisises, it is expectable that the story around Shinji evolves to different answers.
@ldragon2515
@ldragon2515 Жыл бұрын
@@icarusfd4155 Still, the fact that he can only see Rei as little more than a creepy symbol for escapism, dismissing her subtle character growth and interactions with Shinji I find disappointing. Like, he’d rather ignore her arc of slowly becoming human and learning to love and care for others such as Shinji (which I found to be heartwarming and one of the best elements of the series), purely because that would get in the way of his oh-so-important theme of anti-escapism somehow. The opportunity for character growth and relationship building is ruined purely so Anno can lecture to us.
@icarusfd4155
@icarusfd4155 Жыл бұрын
@@ldragon2515 i think you should see further. Rei being cut off in the middle of her growth and affirmation and humanisation is both a recall to the determinism of her nature (« just one more clone ») and the cruelty and the psychopathy of not only Gendo, but most adults, and especially Corporatism. The shock value of dumping that Rei gives its meaning to the analysis you can make of it. A happy ending would only fuck it all. So to the opposite, Anno commits to the deep end of his story and messages. (Personal note : sure i wanted a better fate for « Rei 2 », but for once it’s not a Disney level emotional candy so I’m happy with it)

Everyone but Shinji and Mari being on the other side of the tracks at the end says it all: Anno, you, me, and everyone who gets it, is done. We finally get to walk away, we get that *closure.* The rest of the cast on the other side, the characters who in many ways were simply tools to tell the story, the people who can't/won't let EVA go... their story can go on, or it can end in any infinite number of ways, but it doesn't, *shouldn't* matter to us. We each live our own lives. Instrumentality was rejected for a reason.

Bro. For 3 movies, it needed more like 6. How would anyone come conclusion without writing a essay, and watching 3 times over. Honestly the series was masterfully done compared to the rebuild. They are phenomenal movies. But I don't see how this movie concluded anything more than EOE or ep 25-26. Every time they needed to move the plot forward they just tossed on some spears, and a time gap to make things work. Also why didn't Shinji wish Adam away like the EVA's all the problems are byproducts of Adam not the EVA's...

It is so good on Anno to make all this esoteric, fanservice-riddled bullshit when his main point appears to be "Get a life and leave me the fuck alone". Loved the mythology stuff! Mechanical justification of events is what kept holding me back from enjoying the Rebuild movies. The "But what the fuck is even going onnnnn" factor overpowered me ;DDD Thank you for this vid! Maybe I'll finally be able to watch the movies without hating them ;DDD

One thing I do question, is why after everything is said and done, Asuka is nowhere and to be seen, and Shinji is with Mari, when he had confessed to Asuka that he had loved her. Yes, I'm aware that "loved" is the important word there, but even if those feelings are no longer present, I don't understand why Asuka ins't there at all. If Rei wasn't there, it would make sense that Asuka wouldn't since that would mean that by making it so that Evangelions never existed that the clones wouldn't either, but that isn't the case since Rei is present. I can only think of 2 explanations for this, the first is that all the other characters are from Japan, and the final sequence shows their lives in Japan, and that Asuka is still living in Germany since the Evas never existed, similar to how she doesn't appear in Neon Genesis Evangelion until about halfway through the series. The other explanation I can think of is that Rei does not exist because of Evangelions, and that Asuka does exist because of Evangelions, which would mean that if Evangelions weren't to exist, neither would Asuka. It's clear that Asuka is a different character in rebuild, since she has none of her trauma that was characteristic of her in Neon Genesis, not to mention having a different name, which is an important distinction to make because it means that we can't definitively say anything about Asuka Langley Shikinami's past that isn't stated, and sadly not a lot about her is stated. I always felt that Asuka was the biggest weakness of Rebuild as a result of all of this. That she wasn't given the same level of importance as the other characters were, especially since it would have made more sense that Asuka would end up with Shinji, but instead Shinji ends up with the nothing character. Despite your points on Mari, I still think there was absolutely nothing that justifies her and Shinji being together in the end, especially when the story finally made it crystal clear that Shinji and Asuka have feelings for one another. The only thing I can think of that would lead to this is if thanks to Evangelions never existing, that Asuka and Shinji would have never met, and if that scene on the beach, mirroring the ending of The End of Evangelion where Shinji and Asuka speak to eachother and Shinji tells her that he loved her, acts as an acknowledgement that they would have been together if given the chance, but without Evangelions it simply wasn't going to happen. Maybe I'm looking to hard at this, but if you care to read all this, I wanna know what you think about Asuka not being present at the end.

Thanks for this. It's so spiteful to see so many people decry the Rebuilds as a mindless cash grab, all the while praising EoE, which itself was mindless violence bait. Hideaki Anno himself said he hated he failed with the original ending, then made EoE and hated it. With the Rebuilds he finally said he managed to completely tell the original story he wanted to, and you can tell with how much love is in the Rebuilds ending.

What are your thoughts on the very final scene, in the train station? Is this the real world that every character now resides in, does Village 3 etc still exist or is everything to do with Eva completely erased? Or is the station simply in the AU and Shinji and Mari are leaving it? Or are there perhaps multiple universes now, one where impacts happened, one where they didn't? Love the analysis and attention to detail here, super informative!
