Ramiel looks like the most horrifyingly difficult thing to animate, and simultaneously one of the most fun things to animate.

Since it's CGI it was mostly likely a lot easier and cheaper than the other scenes. The harsh angles and lack of fine details would also make t a lot easier to animate.

Ramiel gives me the idea of “this is the biblically accurate angel” It moves in physically impossible ways like we’re looking at a 4D organism from a 3D perspective, it screams and creates vocalizations that remind me of gospel choirs, and there’s no possible way to know what it’s thinking but you can tell it’s trying to do something specific

I’m coming back to this scene now after a long time and I’m only now just realizing the vocals going “ahhhhhhhhhh” as Ramiel casually hovers around, are not from the background music but coming from Ramiel itself. The reason why Adam's children came to earth in the way they did was never made clear. They attacked earth or more specifically Tokyo-3, but why could have multiple reasons. To retrieve and connect with Adam which would cause the creation of more angels, to connect with Lilith to start The Second Impact (I think) or to simply retrieve both or even something else. Can we talk about the drilling scene from 1:30 and how it messes with perception of scale. Because Ramiel's body is literally a featureless octahedron our sense of scale when looking at one particular bit of Ramiel is completely bonked. When Ramiel starts drilling our brains automatically assume we're seeing the full lower half of Ramiel's body, even if it knows that it's actually really big. Then cut to the next shot from far away and we see the building-sized drill was only a tiny, and I mean TINY extension of Ramiel's huge body. Ramiel being literally a geometric shape works in many impressive ways but I haven't seen a lot of people talk about this particular bit. The moviemakers really used the simple design to so many various effects.

"Ramiel" is one of, if not THE, most _alien_ things in any anime. No limbs or speech, no relatable expressions or body language; just simplistic, shifting geometric shapes that don't even seem to obey the laws of physics (changing mass, density, shape, and even completely separating and then rejoining all at random according to it's will)... Ramiel's always been my favorite Angel. A lot of the others seem more like a classic big bad monster or godlike entity, while Ramiel seemed so intimidating and Alien from the rest. In the original Anime, it was a foreboding unmoveable crystal hovering above Tokyo-3 and it's laser beams would take out any who dare to confront it. It felt more like a fortress or battle station rather than a living thing. In the Rebuild, it is now even more freaky. Truly one of the closest representations of the "Biblically accurate angels", with its geometry-defying shapeshifting and unnatural yet human-like screams. Even freakier is the fact that it BLEEDS red blood like us earthlings, super creepy. Not to mention that it's laser attack FUCKING MELTS THROUGH MOUNTAINS! It truly comes across as something not from this universe, almost like trying to imagine something from a higher physical dimension interacting with our three-dimensional space.

It only exposes the spheres when firing. Now that's what I call sacred geometry. Also notice the scans show the platonic solids inside.

Always like how Ramiel's scream synchronizes with the charge up noise before it shoots too. A1 sound fx

@0:26The way Ramiel opens up for that very first energy beam is so mesmerizing. Love it.

Unironically one of the most creative depictions of a "higher dimensional being" I think I've seen.

I just realized just to kill an angel it cost billions of dollars. Multiple city blocks got evaporated, hundreds of tomahawk missiles were deployed, countless of ground canons were gone and consuming the whole power grid of Japan to energize a couple positron sniper shots. Not to mention the repair cost for neo Tokyo

It's been so long ago since I watched this movie, the only thing I remembered was Ramiel. Now I keep coming back, not just for it's awesome abilities and ridicioulus power, but I also fell in love with the artillery barrage they were dropping on it. It looks so spectacular and powerful, and I've never seen a movie or anime show anything similar.

This is the thing I come for when I say limitation breeds creativity. The original design is basically caused because they didn't have money to animate anything else but a hovering square, and now this is the most terrifying Angel in the series.

The sounds that Ramiel produces are the best that this angel has, the Oooh-Oooh- every time he moves and the AAAIAAIAIAIAAA when he shoots and his cry of suffering when he is damaged are a chill.
