In today's video, I'm sharing 10 things to STOP buying for a wardrobe you're actually going to use and wear. In my personal style & decluttering journey, I discovered I want not only a wardrobe I LOVE and feel inspired by, but I also want a wardrobe I ACTUALLY wear. Every item in our wardrobe should serve a purpose - so here's some things I'm working to buy less or not buy AT ALL so I get the best optimal USE of my clothes.

Such a great question! It got me thinking about what I don’t want rather than what I do. You mentioned most that I could think of: thrift, on-sale, I’ll-fitting, meh, uncomfortable. The only thing I might add is fast-fashion brands. Taking care of the environment is important to me.:)

I take a longer look at the quality of fabric and construction than I used to in the past. I tend to wear basic classic clothing in a limited color palette. I'd rather have fewer quality pieces than a bursting closet of things I'd rather not wear.

My daughter was in a panic because she needed 3 outfits for 2 weddings in one weekend. I helped her shop her wardrobe. She had 2 gorgeous 50s/60s vintage dresses plus a vintage repro dress and a beautiful 1950s hat and various vintage handbags. In the end she only had to buy a pair of heels and they were inexpensive. She was one of the best dressed women at these weddings and looked stunning and got many compliments.

I stop buying "must-have" or "essential" pieces just because fashion influencers says so. If the piece doesn't suit my lifestyle there's no point because the cost per wear is not going to be in my favour. I still enjoy watching fashion videos to live vicariously through the creators but I don't have to own everything I like ✨

And the opposite is also true. If you like a piece that fits your life and your taste but isn’t super trendy who cares ? Like if it is useful in your life and you enjoy it but it instead of a trendy clothe that is gonna stay in your wardrobe because is somehow off. Plus vintage pièce that aren’t trendy can be pretty cheap or not super pricy for what it is 😊

It's funny you mentioned "bad undies," as recently I had to do a whole undergarment purge. After going braless for the entirety of my college life + pandemic lockdown, I realized that none of my bras fit- nor did they ever actually properly fit to begin with, it was all things my mom bought because that's what she felt my size should be. Now that I have my own money and able to make my own purchases, I got professionally fitted. Instead of 12 bras that didn't fit, I now have 4 good ones that do. It's definitely given me a huge confidence boost, and now I can wear certain tops and dresses without being overly self conscious.

Unforgettable brilliant line: "I don't want to have to negotiate with my pain tolerance every time I wear these things." I did this with shoes, as in if the occasion were only 2-4 hours I could probably wear certain shoes but not if it were an all-day event. I just cleared out all the shoes that I never or rarely wore b/c they were uncomfortable and I was shocked how many pairs went out the door, and how long I'd been keeping them in my closet. Never again! Thank you!

I had one blazer that I wore into the ground in college but then somehow have never really worn them again. With my style at the time it didn’t feel stuffy because I was wearing them with more casual clothes and over a hoodie even and felt like a menswear touch which is what I think I was going for, but these days I just don’t like dealing with collared shirts and blazers because I don’t want to iron anything after washing it 😅

I always struggled with blazers, as being slightly pear shaped they were not comfortable. Then from learning about French style, I learned that the secret is to wear blazers in a more relaxed and casual fashion. Team them with jeans, sneakers and white t shirts and push the sleeves up. I now get compliments on my blazers.

I've been doing it for years! I ask myself, 'do I already have something similar'? The answer is invariably 'yes'. The other question is where will I wear it? If it's to an occasion that won't come up often I just stick to the thing I already bought for that type of occasion. As long as you buy non fad clothes it's fine. they last years! The other thing is keeping your weight stable. I don't like to lose a lot of weight or put it on because it costs money, it's a waste to change over your clothes. Easier to just eat a bit less and Do light eating at night. People keep eating the same quantities as they age and their metabolism slows. Just cut down on food and comfort eating. I allow myself a bit of dark chocolate a day. Hardly any sweets or sugary things. It's just a no-no. IMO.

A great tip I was given about essentials is buy them on different sizes because some days you feel like Medium-adjusted black tee-shirt and the next day you feel a little puffy and bloated and you'd rather wear it in Large. Also you might need an M option with a high-waist jeans for a fitted sharp look and an L with a legging for a more casual laid-back look.

Not necessarily. I’m a 36DDD and I was in my correct size but underwire bras were still uncomfortable. I got my same size in wireless and problem solved. Not everyone has the same body type/shape and I think that plays a part. Even with my shape, underwear can be uncomfortable if I’m in the correct size.
@annw7843
@annw7843 Жыл бұрын
@@so.many.obstacles fit is more than just size, it’s also about having a pattern that works with your shape. You can pick up a bra that claims to be your size on the tag, but doesn’t fit right because the angle and pattern of the underwire doesn’t work with your body. Underwire isn’t a requirement, it doesn’t provide support, it just provides shape. If you don’t care about shaping, then don’t bother with underwire. That being said, underwire shouldn’t be uncomfortable. If it’s not comfortable, it’s either not fitted properly or it’s being worn improperly. It’s true about most clothes, if it’s not comfortable it’s probably not fitted for you properly. If your bra is uncomfortable it’s not the bra for you. I mostly made the above comment, because I felt the video implied that underwire bras are inherently uncomfortable.

I am SO glad that you DID buy the thrifted fringed leather jacket (and can't believe you don't wear it, lol!). And thank you for acknowledging that "staples" are unique to each individual. I've stopped buying shoes that are non-leather (ie made of plastic / PU leather). No matter how cute or funky the design, they always exhaust my feet horribly due to heat / sweat / blisters. It means paying more and being more selective but I've learned too many times now that sore uncomfortable feet are never worth it.

I find that I most often use pieces that are part of my go-to outfit formula. Like jeans + t-shirt. To spice things up I have started incorporating skirts into my wardrobe instead of jeans. It requires a little push to put them on in the morning but I'm generally very happy with the looks. Items that I stopped buying are mainly occasion-wear and no regrets there. What a fantastic video! I think it should be required viewing for everyone when they start to buy their own stuff! For me, the feeling of self-satisfaction/sense of sweet relief when I resist the “meh”/because it’s on sale/doesn’t quite feel right/etc purchases makes me just as giddy as a good, solid, exciting purchase. I heard once that most people are already wearing a capsule wardrobe, we just can’t see it because of all the other clothes covering/cluttering it up. That really struck a cord with me and helps me to really see and evaluate my clothes and be honest with myself. Again, a super video. Will save to rewatch and share. I’m a big fan from Nova Scotia ☺️🇨🇦.

Nowadays I’m buying for a good feeling. I used to buy clothes only for being dressed properly 🫣. Now I’m 61 and finally have the guts to dress for a more powerfull look. I get lots of compliments and see eyes on me when I go shopping or something 💃🏼Now I’m proud of how I look for my age, without being too sexy but just being my shiny self 🤩

I’m at the point now where I know my style and love all the clothes in my closet. HOWEVER, I have too much because I keep buying similar pieces. I do love them, but I already have 10 things that look the same. When I try it on though, I’m like- oh I love this and it looks so good! I’m not sure how to walk away from those items!

I can't remember what You-Tuber I got this from....but recently I have been saying to myself "Do I already have something that will function the same as **whatever I'm thinking of buying**". At first, I thought this would not be helpful advice because part of the fun of buying something is....the high of buying! But thinking through purchases in this was has been extremely helpful to me, surprising me greatly!

I find that feelings about an item can change. A lot of time I tried on the clothes and they feel nice so I buy them. After a few wears/a few washes they don't look/feel like when they are new, so the feeling changes. I don't know how people can have a capsule wardrobe these days- feels like it is just never enough.

I did a no fast fashion challenge and that completely changed my shopping habits, when spending more on clothes I got to really think about it a lot if I really wanted it or not. The challenge is over now and I still buy some fast fashion pieces due to my overall budget. but the shopping process has stayed the same, and I absolutely love that. i simply don’t get that urge anymore and I have become very picky with that I buy. You are on point with every example. I feel like I learned these lessons the long and hard way (also the very expensive way). One of the biggest lessons for me was learning what I actually felt comfortable in and enjoyed wearing. Like a lot of women I was told if I have a specific shape and size then I should wear xyz. And while that advice is helpful as a starting point it doesn’t necessarily reflect what you actually enjoy wearing. So for a while my closet was full of items that I technically looked good in, but didn’t feel good in and over time I would just stop wearing them completely. It wasn’t until I started tracking what I wear every day and also kept track of the items I was decluttering that I was able to pinpoint what actually works for me, and also what doesn’t.

This was so helpful and so much truth! One question I ask myself when I'm shopping is this garment similar to something I already have but it's better quality and would last longer. Often times the answer is no. I have to spend enough time in my closet to know what I have so that when I'm shopping I remember. If I buy something new with tags that can be returned, I keep the tags on them try it on at home with different clothes that I already have to see if I can mix and match and use it multiple ways. If the answer is no, I bag it up and put it on my list of things to do to return it because I'm shameless about returning things if I haven't worn them.

I love wearing maxi dresses in the summer months. In the autumn and winter I wear knitted dresses and when really cold I will wear jeans with knitted jumper. Very simple and when I want to buy something new I will first look in my wardrobe. I choose a dress that doesn't fit nice any more and make it into a sleeveless dress or skirt and wear it with a white t-shirt. I never want to change this wardrobe. I am very happy. I rather spend my money on organic food. Much love.

With me, it's definitely shoes. No more heels or sneakers, for sure. I have far too many that I hardly have a chance to wear because I have my usual go-to pairs. Also, I know what you mean about "occasion" pieces! That one hit hard. There's a red and black jumpsuit I wore once and a really pretty dark pink dress that was on sale - tags are still on. I'm so sure they'll come in handy during the summer months though (southern hemisphere girl, here). Your uncomfortable and then comfortable boots story was so relatable! My one caveat would be items that are too big. If I love something and it’s too big, I will have it altered. However, I have a tailor I have worked with to re-imagine items or tailor to fit for years. I buy off the rack and have most of my pieces tailored. My tailor is amazing and incredibly affordable.

Having less clothing really gives us the opportunity to enjoy what you love. Also, less laundry! I don't believe there is a specific number of wardrobe items for all people. If I have 20 t-shirts, love wearing 'em and take care of them, that could be my number. Someone else might think that's too many tees, and that's fine with me, but they'd better stay away from mine! 😉 If I have to buy a staple piece, I find the one or 2 that I'll wear, and I'm done. Happy closet declutter!

Similar to you, I have massive student debt and I don't want to make the mistake of upgrading my lifestyle and feeling trapped in my high-paying job.
