Cloud Beginner? Don't Learn DevOps: Here's Why.

DevOps? What on earth is DevOps, and should you, as a cloud beginner target the DevOps role? My short answer: no. The DevOps role is very confused across the industry, with many companies having a vastly different idea of what a DevOps person does, making it much harder to build a learning plan around, and making it harder to prepare for interviews. This doesn't mean you shouldn't apply for jobs with the title DevOps, just that I don't recommend using it as a role to target.

▶ A PRACTICAL START WITH CLOUD / AWS
I highly recommend Stephen Mareeks AWS courses. If you’re a total beginner I recommend the “Certified Cloud Practitioner” otherwise the “Associate Developer”. If you plan to take the exam, I also highly recommend Jon Bonso’s practice exams:

geni.us/stephane-mareek-ccp
geni.us/stephane-mareek-dev
Why I recommend Stephane and Jon’s courses:

▶ WRITE A CLOUD RESUME THAT LANDS YOU THE JOB
There is no better book which explain Tech Hiring and how to write a resume that passes tech screening processes than “The Tech Resume: Inside out”. I am referenced in the book and my review (Twitter) is on the homepage. It’s free if you’re unemployed and is priced based on your location.

▶ BUILD YOUR RESUME (AS A PROJECT) USING CLOUD TECHNOLOGY
The “Cloud Resume Challenge” is a 12 step. I love the challenge, I’m an active member of the Discord, and I have a whole playlist on KZbin to help you complete the challenge. There is a book (it’s optional), but I strongly recommend it. Get the “Cloud Resume Challenge” book:

Yeah. I do struggle to help folks applying for the DevOps role sometimes since it's just so varied and widely interpreted. It can be hard to build a learning plan around, for sure.

I had a in mind, and that is if you have almost 1 years' experience as a self-taught aspiring front end developer using the usual suspect HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React. How difficult is it since I have no backend knowledge with API, server-side experience like databases. How hard would it be for someone like me to get into DevOps? Is DevOps technically much more difficult in comparison to back end? Or is it at the same difficulty level?

Hi Lou, Even when I look at Cloud engineer roles I still see some descriptions say 'devops experience'. As you said the industry is confused on the what devops actually is. What do you think is the best job role for beginner cloud wannabes that want to get their foot through the cloud door? Would you say Junior Cloud Engineer?
@openupthecloud
@openupthecloud 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Cyrix, welcome ! I've seen people approach this from a few different angles... 1. I see a lot of people going the admin/helpdesk route, that's what Rishab did, and talks about here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/govYiI1miKeMo5o 2. I personally went the web development route, and started that way in development then moved into the cloud (I should do a video on this) 3. Some companies will put up "junior" roles, but getting some really good personal projects in, and you could apply for non-junior cloud engineer roles. 4. AWS (and companies like them) are open to people with less experience, e.g. through the "Tech U" program (if you can get past the competition)

Hey @@chandramoulidasari3946 ! My thoughts on which cert to take first: openupthecloud.com/which-aws-certification-first For roles, Andrew Brown has a nice write-up here I was reading the other day, which might help: iamcloud.dev/is-it-recommended-to-first-be-a-system-admin-in-a-user-support-role-before-becoming-cloud-engineer-in-azureaws-gcp For a roadmap, I recommend these 4 tools as a starting point (mostly regardless of role) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKXIqXR5f7p5ebc This roadmap also might be useful as a general reference for tools: roadmap.sh/devops A lot of the leraning platforms have learning paths (if you're an ACG member, for instance): acloudguru.com/learning-paths BUT you're right, a video would be great, I've been meaning to do something similar for quite some time-hopefully I get around to it soon!

That's a good Q! You might like / find this thread useful: twitter.com/loujaybee/status/1419700390442975232?s=20 I'm not a fan of that role for beginners, and I don't really suggest it... BUT it does seem that AWS (and maybe some other big enterprises) have a good set up to train SA's so that they're successful.
