3:42 for fellow viewers who are a little obsessed with maps and locations. To see where Stefan Langer was flying during his trip abroad. And who used the Closed Caption [cc] option, on this video, to hear the name of that particular Swedish lake. And like me got "Lake Vernon" in the translation... The 🇸🇪guy was talking about Lake Vänern (probably the biggest lake in Sweden). Which is situated to the North East of the city of Gotenburg. You are welcome 😁✌🏻#MapNerd

Many years ago I was flying with a friend in his Stearman. We were going to a nearby military airfield, in lowering cloud. I was in the front cockpit. We were on a four mile final with clearance to land but advised of patches of cloud at around seven hundred feet QFE. The runway was not yet in sight but the ADF was tuned to the airfield beacon and the needle was centralised. As we descended the visibility became noticeably worse. To break off the approach, or continue? We were not yet at published minimums, so with the ADF firmly centralised we continued and saw the runway dead ahead at exactly MDA. After landing my friend complimented me on a well flown approach. ."It would not have been possible without your ADF" say's I. It was the only piece of electronic nav' equipment in the Stearman. He looked at me and said "I thought I told you it doesn't work". Any instrument rated pilot will quickly spot the cardinal mistakes I made.

Where do you fly again? USA? It's actually very much legal. See my comment above. There's an SSA article from Shawn Knickerbocker, an FAA DPE, about this subject. I can look up which one it is. Just make sure any instruments you use are certified for instrument flying. If they state "not for instrument flying" like the LXNAV, then you can't use it. But the majority of GA experimental instruments are legal to cloud fly. You also need an airplane instrument rating to do so, and maintain recency of flight requirements in actual or simulated conditions.

@@SteFly understood. That comment just got me laughing! I am a retired airline pilot and wish cloud flying was legal here in Canada. In the 50’s at our club, 2 members got their Gold Altitude inside of a TCU (not at the same time) Very interesting story!

@@CLdriver1960 aha! Sorry to hear this. To be fair: there'd be those few who would cloud fly in unfavorable conditions in the winter and that's all that needs to be said about that. LoL I'm going to talk to our glider chief instructor about doing my IPC using view limiters. After that I'll make sure to stay current per the regs. During the summer time here in Florida: cloud flying is suicide due to the very high lightning activity we get at that time. But during spring and fall it is sublime, gentle, and completely absent of lightning, much like Stefan's flight. It's a sure shot way to get a diamond climb here in Florida and it has been documented and even made records here using it. All legally - even though some who aren't rated SWEAR it's illegal.

Good point. Many people still do not accept that we live in a globally interconnected, and to a large extent a globally dependent world. That was not the case when Hitler could send invading armies across state boundaries. The rest of the world being unable to do much but watch. Putin will not have that luxury.

How do you fly into clouds? Have you aquired permission by ATC? Is it required to have a transponder? I know we have an astir cs with a very bad turn and slip indicator with a gyro, for cloud flying. But here it is not allowed without permission from ATC.
@MyChannel-bh6sc
@MyChannel-bh6sc Жыл бұрын
In those EASA countries where cloud flying is allowed, you don't need any ATC permission as long as you fly in Class G airspace. Transponder is not required. In Finland for example, most airspace outside of TMAs and below FL95 is Class G. If you want to enter controlled airspace (e.g., fly higher than FL95), it's much easier to get a clearance if you have a transponder.

Ever heard of the 57 seconds rule ? when you enter clouds with a glider ? it states that you have 57 seconds left to live, as gliders are not equiped with IFR instruments you are easily losing references are the moment your are upside down it the end (speed build up increasingly and the glider loses wings and the cockpit becomes a bullet). In France it simply forbidden to penetrate clouds. let me know how the swedish pilot managed to travel inside the cloud ? thx

Cloud flying is also allowed, and frequently practiced in the UK. These days AHRS in sailplanes are common but it can be done on just a turn and slip. ......... or maybe we are just better pilots. :)

We use a turn-and-bank indicator (though you CAN get artificial horizons for gliders now). Basically just a ball and a turn rate needle. You match it to the other instruments to stay on an even keel. Not easy, but fun!

@Rickenbacker69
@Rickenbacker69 2 жыл бұрын
Here in Sweden it is. You simply have to declare on the frequency that you're entering clouds, and of course have the proper instrumentation and training.
@DinantRiks
@DinantRiks 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rickenbacker69 It is also legal in the UK as VFR flight. Glider needs to be allowed to fly in cloud, and proper instrumentation and training is also required. And in UK you also regularly broadcast altitude and position over the special frequency
