The "two fingers up" being rude in the UK goes back to the Battle of Agincourt because supposedly the French would cut off the two fingers of any archers they captured (so they couldn't draw a bow) - so the English would put two fingers up as a sign of "f*** you, I still have my fingers" Its highly unlikely this is the truth, but that is ye olde tale anyway...

Also find it funny that the CMA compared the size of the cloud gaming market to the size of physical album purchases in the music industry in order to show how important of a market it is to protect. Nobody buys albums anymore, it's like 1/30th the size of the overall music industry. Everyone streams. If the CMA had just come out and said "you know, you're a $1 trillion company , we think you're too large and don't want you splashing so much cash", then I'd respect it. I'd question why they didn't put their foot down on Amazon or other conglomerates before now when they've been splashing cash into every industry known to man, but at least it would seem like an actual turning point. With this, it almost feels like the CMA doesn't actually understand the market they've spent a year researching. Microsoft is the only one actually pumping money into cloud gaming. They weren't the first (Sony actually created a cloud gaming service before them, though idk if they were actually the first), and companies like Google tried and failed because nobody wanted their product. But because Microsoft is betting on that 1% of the market growing due to their investment, and is really the only one to be doing so, they have to stay in a distant third in the console space? It doesn't make sense. If Microsoft completely drops their investment into cloud gaming because they feel it just isn't worth it, that would make the deal perfectly acceptable to the CMA but would also likely kill the entire cloud gaming market, or at least set it back a possible decade. That doesn't seem like it would be the outcome the CMA would want.
@YdenMk-II
@YdenMk-II Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the CMA wanted to block this deal because of the too large thing (or maybe just because it's big tech) but just being too large isn't a legal justification for blocking it since they couldn't prove the whole hurting competition thing with Sony so much in the lead. All these agencies already tried to limit the market to Sony and MS because they didn't want to include Nintendo and PCs which is why Sony was able to make the whole if we lose CoD, we'd go out of business type filings.

I mean everyone used to buy "singles" rather than physical albums for 99p/c on iTunes instead of having to buy a physical "single" with like 4 versions of the same song for about a 1/3rd the price of the album. As I remember the music industry was against Apple's storefront until they pulled up Napster?/Limewire? and showed how easy it was to download the songs for free. Also Jobs said iTunes is only available on Mac computers which have a single digit share of the computer market, it's hardly going to kill album sales.

The UK equivalent of the middle finger fit very well, actually. It's a really shitty move to hire people living hundreds of miles away and agreeing for them to work entirely from home, only to suddenly change your mind a while later. The very least they could've done is giving them a notice of at least 6 months in advance so they can either relocate or have time to find a new job. If I were in this situation, I could not even relocate immediately if I wanted to because I simply could not afford it right now.

It's the tech world man - there's this idea that getting a new job is just some outrageous thing for someone to have to do, you'll often get bombarded with comments about "how hard it is to get a new job" and such, a lot of people have this whole "a job should be a right!" outlook which just isn't even logically sound. I don't get it, it's just a thing with the tech community I guess(like constantly finding something to bitch & moan about; I was only able to make it 5 minutes into Jay's last video lol). I have other hobbies & interests too, like I'm heavy into motorsports for example, have built engines & race cars, have raced myself(grassroots level, though I've gotten to work on race cars professionally), and the community couldn't be much more different than the tech community, even in spite of a lot of overlap.

i think this is more about game pass than about cloud gaming itself, microsoft is taking over as many publishers as possible to create a market where game pass would be like netlix was for first few years... if microsoft owns most of companies in gaming sector it stops them from creating their own version of game pass and by that microsoft has monopoly on that sector of gaming, and it is going to get bigger every year.
@Falcon4224
@Falcon4224 Жыл бұрын
If that's the actual reason, then the CMA simply doesn't understand the market they've spent a year researching. Gamepass isn't game streaming. Why does the USA have a seat at the table when deciding who should rule central American countries? The non-joke answer is simple, they want to do business here they follow our rules. Would you be OK if a British company started selling something in the US that you all had outlawed, you know like Kinder Eggs? For these particular companies it goes even deeper as they have corporate entities registered in the UK. So the court is not dictating what American companies is doing, they are regulating what global companies are doing.

Activison isn't a competitor because they're a developer/publisher. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo (and now Valve) are competitors because they produce their own hardware and platforms and so that's the market they're all competing in. All Activision does is make games, therefore they can only compete in the software market. Now when it comes to the software market iself, Microsoft does own plenty of in-house and aquires studios, don't get me wrong. But unlike Sony, Microsoft is thoroughly interested in releasing their titles on other platforms such as PC, Nintendo Switch and even Sony's Playstation as shown with Minecraft. Sony is hesitant to even release their titles on PC and one of the very few third party titles on their platform that allows for crossplay is Fortnite. Sony is also the one spearheading these investigations against the acquisition (because they want Activision themselves.) If anyone here is being anticompetitive, it's Sony.

I would be surprised if cloud gaming surpasses 5% by 2030 People hate the input lag of doing wireless VR where the hardware is physically just feet away And cloud gaming is even worse than that when the network setup doesn’t totally suck image quality can be ignored everything is moving to AV1 But the latency cannot be ignored its something like 10ms for a wireless controller then you also have 10ms for network latency, then about 20ms for encode/transfer/decode and the frame latency ontop So like 60ms best case scenario at 60fps render rate So the types of games that would be fine for cloud gaming is limited and the people that play those types of games is even more limited Then you stick on the internet requirements plenty dont have the bandwidth for it and the rest dont have low enough ping time to the cloud servers there game would be run

I see the newer generation growing up playing (kind of) fast paced online games on their phones over laggy/unreliable 4G or wifi. They often just dont know better and thinking about it... if everyone on the platform is using the same tech (4G lag in this case) they all have the same disadvantage and sort of dont care. So I could see a future where that generation just uses cloud gaming as they dont have to invest in the tech and hardware to try out the gaming hobby and simply use a montly payment instead... Gaming on your local device might be the thing for enthusiasts or for the people which use higher end tech for work (rendering) while also gaming on the same device in the distant future, if work like that hasnt yet moved to cloud computing as well. 🤔

@@DiverseGreen-Anon game lag and input latency are completely different In a game lag just means the enemy might teleport a few meters or you could suddenly be dead Input latency is when you shoot and the amount of time it takes to go from input to visually on screen Best case scenario is 60ms and that pales in comparison to the expected 17ms which comes from the time between frames Typically your probably looking at 100ms or more of delay and the elite e-sports gamers tale about 100ms from seeing an enemy to clicking too shot it so that 100ms irl delay added on with the 100ms latency delay means you miss because the target is no longer there of it was moving

Cloud gaming up to this point is just a gimmick, it doesn't function properly AT ALL. Latency is horrendous when playing any type of multiplayer matchmaking and one huge issue is the compression. When I'm playing anything dark, you get a ton of pixelation and super hard to see any details. Xbox is constantly asking me to download the game if I'm enjoying it with no way of turning off the notification. It costs more for consumers in the long run to stream games than to just download them. Its a gimmic and isn't something gamers should want, especially for mulitplayer.

Living in Australia I can tell you even in the CBD of a city the internet is not of good quality even if it is fast. None of the companies serving as ISPs care in this country due to the handouts, bailouts and how the cables are owned privately. Most places run on some combination of newer copper ADSL lines, older copper lines converted to DSL that were laid down in the 60s and haven't been maintained since then and a weird gaggle of optic. Most areas don't get optical to the premises, just their node and I know of some areas that share a node over twice the capacity. The rollout of the optical cables was horrific (still on going btw many years later).

Story goes, is that the two-fingers gesture goes back to our time waring with the French, because upon capturing a British archer, they'd cut their third finger off, to hamper them from drawing their way bows... but, upon being feed and returning to the battlefield, these archers would raise the two fingers of this maimed hand, showing them to the French as they rained arrows upon them, as a sign that the act was meaningless to them, because they were skilled enough to draw their bows with just two fingers! So yeah... that gesture goes back to our age-old feud with the French, apparently... 😹

While I agree that consolidation of the industry is bad all around, I don't see how Microsoft acquiring Activision/Blizzard/King will cause significant harm to the industry. The barrier for entry in the video game industry is so much lower than for example, the film industry, and as other comments have said - There wasn't nearly the same scrutiny towards the Disney acquisitions. It is more likely IMO that Act/Bliz/King shrinks and becomes irrelevant after the acquisition than it helping Microsoft monopolize the videogame industry. Their core talent has been leaving and forming new studios (as has happened with the Diablo II devs and also Jeff Kaplan from Overwatch) and there's no reason to see why this trend won't continue, especially with all the controversy around Bobby Kotick.

Cloud gaming is a neat gimmick. Better development and not prioritizing profit is a better idea. Games should perform much better than they do so most people can play them regardless of hardware. Nintendo has made many amazing games for the Switch that run rather good despite its mediocre hardware, you can even emulate it on handheld devices now. Now the only thing that's actually missing is to stop charging so damn much money. "oh but games are so expensive to make" yeah? more people play games than ever. Elden Ring, that 200 million dollar project made like 7 billion. The profit margins on a $60 game is still insane, if not more now than ever frankly. It's just CEOs and corpos manipulated everyone into believing that games are just so expensive and impossible to make that they NEED all the things that have made them worse. The people making the games and putting in the time, aren't getting paid proportionally to the growth. It's all being pocketed by rich people and you get lied to about the difficulties of game development. Yes it's hard, but not for the reasons they ever list. It's sad to see people just forget that the amount of consumers is incredibly important to pricing and profit margins. Games grew in popularity way faster than their costs to make.

It is a very good thing, Microsoft owns the OS, a chunk of PC gaming market, and a chunk of the console gaming market. They already have way too much control and ownership. It is far too much. Consolidation of companies is never a good thing, all it does is create a massive loss in monetary value of the corporation which then offsets that to the workforce and consumers. Its truly insane people are too stupid to understand that -69 billion is going to have to be recuperated by somebody and Microsoft is definitely not going to be just "eating" that cost for the 'good' of humanity. These corporations aren't our friends, they are our overlords.
@Falcon4224
@Falcon4224 Жыл бұрын
Thing is, the CMA wasn't able to actually demonstrate that kind of control you're mentioning in any of the industries this acquisition could affect other than cloud gaming. They tried to loop the OS into it, but quickly found that the competition (Linux and Mac) simply aren't good platforms for games, and that existing ABK games were already avoiding them because of that. And that's not because of MS anti-competitive behavior, but simply because of how those platforms are designed. So that was ruled out. The PC gaming market was quickly ruled out because Steam is just such a dominant force. ABK already avoids Steam in favor of their own storefront, and MS has actually been putting all of their games on Steam, so that would actually *improve* competition for PC storefronts, so that was ruled out. The console market was completely ruled out because MS is a distant third. Even when the CMA tried to segregate Nintendo out by defining it as the "high-powered console market", they still couldn't demonstrate control because of just how much control Sony has. They even tried to run polls targeted specifically at Playstation COD players, and they found that something like 60-70% of them still would have bought a Playstation if COD was exclusive to another console. So that was ruled out. So, they relied on cloud gaming, 1% of the overall gaming market, with MS being the only one actually investing money into it. If MS completely drops their cloud gaming ambitions, then it seems the CMA would be completely fine with the acquisition based on this report. And it would also completely kill the cloud gaming market, or at least delay by a long time. I don't think that's the kind of result the CMA wants. If they wanted to block it because "MS too big", then they should have said so. However, they probably knew that such a reason wouldn't stand up to scrutiny on appeal.

@@Falcon4224 Why is it people try to justify giving more power to corporations while also naming off like 2 other competitors and saying, "Well its only the third biggest competitor." Again showing their insanity. Do you know what the concept of a free market is? It is allowing companies to have free market over consumer products without allowing any form of control, pricefixing, or domination to any of those companies. The whole point of a free market is for there to be options and as many options as possible. Not a "distant third" option overtaking the other 2 because it was a "distant third". Thats not a free market, thats an oligarchy. I dont care about the CMA, to me that and any other government is a complete joke. You misunderstood the entire basis of my comment and its that "Corporations have too much power and control." and yes that includes Steam, Nintendo, and Sony. Hell, Samsung is more wealthy than an ENTIRE FIRSTWORLD COUNTRY. We need to start limiting the freedoms of these corporations and stop treating them like people and start treating them like conglomerates vying for control and power. But instead you have idiots like the CMA focusing on the wrong thing for the right reasons and you have the FTC focusing on the right thing for the wrong reasons. The FTC would love nothing more for our corporate overlords to have as much power as possible while the CMA is trying to wiggle around limited laws that focus on completely wrong areas of anti-competitive behavior. We are either dealing with a system built to control us or we are dealing with a system too broken to fix us. And you know who will pay the price after all this? Our kids. But nobody gives a shit, they are too busy shopping at malls and shoveling shit in their mouth and their kids are going to grow up with shittier malls and even more disgusting shit. Its the slow degradation of society and we only have our greed and ignorance to blame.

@@Heathensauce Making the rules consistent is incredibly important. Having a government agency completely change gears for one company while allowing pretty much every other corporation to do as they please with no actual change in regulations or rules is incredibly problematic, I'm sure you can agree with that. If the CMA wanted to block this deal on the grounds of Microsoft simply being too big of a company, then they should have said so. But they didn't, because they knew that wouldn't hold up to a legal challenge. So, instead of realizing that they can't do what they want to do, and call on the government to actually change the laws to allow them to limit the size of these corporations, they came up with a nonsensical justification that makes it look like they have no idea how the industry works, while they were completely fine with Amazon, Disney, etc. gobbling up everything under the sun. That's my problem. It looks like selective enforcement of a company they don't like, and that's never a good thing in what's supposed to be an objective regulatory board. I'm all for limiting the size of corporations, they've become too big. But if you're going to do that, then you have to do it right, otherwise all you're doing is fucking over some companies while allowing others to do whatever they want, not actually fixing the problem.
