Personally I'm looking forward to your upcoming systems, as I'd love to have one MiSTer paired with a CRT just for computer cores, and a more consolized version in my game room with the TVs. 8:32 For those wondering, four is considered “unlucky” because it sounds like or is written like the word for death. Some speculate that this is why the N64 security CIC chips skip CIC-NUS 6104/7104 (otherwise range from 6101/7101 to 6106/7106)… so it’s not just China. Don’t be surprised if there is no button for 4 in a Chinese elevator.

I'm pretty much the exact target user. Old school gamer, all about early arcade/console generations. I play a lot of shmups and everyone who does knows accuracy is super important and very difficult with traditional emulation in order to capture very sensitive conditions like slowdown. And of course latency is huge. But I held off for years mainly due to the price issues. I dipped back in now that I got a CRT and everyone told me to just get a MiSTer Pi as a no-brainer. Though it appeared it was selling out very fast. I managed to swoop in at just the right time to get one from the 2nd batch. It's clear this is going to be the default and will open up to a much broader market. I love whenever someone can figure out inefficiencies and solve a glaring market problem. From what I understand Robert's PS1, N64, and GBA FPGA cores are not exactly "cycle accurate" because of issues with the RAM somehow, but they are still much more accurate than basically any software emulator out there.
@bearonguitarАй бұрын
Yes, because of Mister hardware limitations, mostly RAM latency if I understand correctly. I have used both the N64 core side to side with my real PAL N64. They are identical in feel with the only noticeable difference being that the N64 core had slightly less and shorter duration slowdowns in busy sections.
@AberusugiАй бұрын
GBA is something he wants to go back and rewrite one day, it isn't related to the RAM. It is cycle accurate, but cycle accurate =/= 100% accuracy. Cycle accuracy is not the whole story for accuracy. The PS1 and N64 are not 1:1 either. Personally when talking about FPGA cores saying the words "cycle accurate" is less relevant than with software emulators where it is more difficult to achieve cycle accuracy.
@Sim-rh4tj21 күн бұрын
Mine arrived a few days ago. I have much to learn now about how to use it!
@mcferguson81Ай бұрын
Obligatory nerd out -- ACKSHUALLY ... the PS1 core is 98-99% cycle accurate. I don't know where Robert's original posts are (prob his Patreon which is inaccessible), but he did extensive testing of the CPU timings vs. original hardware for basically all (?) operations. On the flip side, some RAM access may be slower iirc and triangle drawing may be too fast... I believe there is a missed cycle counter in the core that balances out RAM slowness by speeding up other operations so that it is imperceptible, and the triangle drawing speed only impacts a handful of games that are not using framebuffer. And thank you for creating MiSTER Pi and growing the community!

I'm not sure if I'll ever get a MisterPi, but do like knowing that if my DE-10 ever bites the dust i'll have a much more economical backup solution, so keep up the great work! One thing I'd like to see though, if it's even possible, would be a change in the overall form factor. I think a mini-itx style carrier board would be great, and shifting the FPGA onto a card like the raspberry pi computer modules would be pretty fantastic. I'd be curious to see how that might affect upgrading in the future to newer more capable FPGAs. Being able to buy a new module and just pop it on the carrier board would be pretty fantastic imho.

I never had an FPGA board and the last time i played on PS1 and older consoles was 20 years ago, for people like me, it would be great id there are side by side comparison between hardware and software emulation so we can see the difference
@Dontrel3030Ай бұрын
I'd love to be proven wrong but I think any differences would be few and far between. Software emulators are building off of decades of iterative work at this point - Years of development, users playing each and every game and reporting back when something goes wrong with the emulation, competing projects copying each others notes, etc. The famous examples a lot of videos about FPGAs cite as the reason software emulators are some sort of problem are edge cases in SNES games that haven't been in any of the popular emulators for over a decade. I wouldn't expect many visually obvious differences on any of the famous PS1 games, but the PS1 had a _lot_ of games.
@AxiomofDiscordАй бұрын
A lot of people will disagree with what I am about to type. This is just what I have discovered. I think FPGA is overhyped for some reasons and underhyped for others. I also think the same could be said of software emulation. Each has its use cases and what I would recommend mostly comes down to how well each would fit your lifestyle, and what you are trying to accomplish. If you are emulating on a sufficiently powerful machine with a mature emulator the only advantage really of FPGA is efficiency. But it destroys in that category and the small box makes for a great living room item. Running Software versus my original hardware with latency hacks and overclocking options I can make an emulator perform "better" than original hardware. Without all that, there is going be some added latency with input. I never could dial in the input of most emulators with original hardware. I either was a little behind or a little ahead. Weaker hardware will have emulators for them that are not as feature rich and may be less accurate. Have stutter, slowdown, sound pops/distortion, missing effects, etc. FPGAs are lower powered than even these weaker software emulator's machines and far more accurate at this level and often way more responsive. I think handheld/hybrid FPGAs are probably one of the best use cases.
@poptheweasel100Ай бұрын
Definitely awesome to see it actually working and in people's hands, and I'm excited to hopefully be getting into it someday. I'm personally waiting on the consolized versions, since I'll mainly be playing on a composite only CRT, direct composite out is pretty important to me. Though I still gotta decide on whether or not I'd get the more standard one or wait for the flagship, I guess it just depends on what the flagship offers. If it offers a NFC card slot for TapTo (or whatever it's called now) then I'll gladly go for it and make a ton of cards for it, cause that physical representation of games is pretty awesome, even if it technically isn't physical lol
