Great video! I’m a long time Cloudways user, and I wanted to point out to those coming from shared cpanel hosting, this is a game changer! Cloudways manages all of the more difficult server admin tasks like server updates & security patches, and you will never have to touch a command prompt. Unlike cpanel, the control panel does not reside on your server, so all of the resources are available for your application to use. You can fit around 5 WordPress sites with a combined 50,000 page views per month on the $10/month DO server. Hope that helps with all of the questions about right sizing the server.

Thanks Adam I have been using Cloudways for 3 or 4 months now, the server speed is amazing and when combined with bunnycdn it costs me less than $11 a month for VPS+CDN hosting!! I way prefer the user interface than cpanel and I love the customer support. It is a bit of a learning curve but massively worth it. Thank you for the staging info I wasn't aware I can do this too. This is the perfect hosting for me and cdn + ssl and elastic email which I use for contact forms is free up to 2000 emails or something like that per month. A1 !! Highly recommended.

Thanks for the video. I have been looking at Cloudways for a while, but have not pulled the trigger. My concern is customer support, isn't it always. I agree with you on support, I have had great and terrible support from Siteground, InMotion, GoDaddy, BlueHost, you name it. On those hosts however, I can resolve probably 95% of issues that arise on my own. It will take me some ramp time to become familiar enough with this system to resolve some of my own issues. I also was not impressed with my initial contact with pre-sales support. You have my vote for additional videos on your setup. I may still give Cloudways a go.

Yeah the silly part is that you can save a lot of money by going directly to the cloud server hosting company but you get no control panel and no support. So it's literally you're paying a premium just to have access to support for those times when you need it.

Thanks, Adam, for this tutorial/review. I tried Cloudways/DO a couple years ago and got a little frustrated coming from a Cpanel/WHM background. First was terminology. In WHM (as a reseller) my websites were listed by domain name. In Cloudways they are referred to as Apps. Then I couldn't find File Manager. Then there was the lack of email. I didn't want to use Cloudways Rackspace because if you ever move away from Cloudways, you lose your stored email. (I personally use ZOHO). Frustration won out and I moved sites back to Cpanel hosting. I think I may try it again, thanks to your video, and move a few of my sites over to test it. I like to have 2-3 hosting options available to my clients. Thanks again.

Dude, i just switched over today and I am flabbergasted! I was on inmotionhosting's vps r-1000 plan for the past five years. i enjoyed them until working on my latest eCommerce wordpress site.. and it was extremelyyy laggy and i kept getting 500 internal errors. I kept contacting support and they kept telling me that nothing is wrong my configs or server, its just might be the plugins that are bogging my site down..blah blah blah. Yeah right! I wasted 2 days trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with my site and my gut feeling told me it was their server! I there did some research and came across Cloudways. I noticed the free trial and decided to just test my theory. And BAM! Every is running SOoOOO smoothly! I love this service and am now a dedicated customer! I upgraded my plan right away and will soon be migrating all my clients sites into this new server. And might I add their customer service is amazing!

Long time cloudways user here. First started with Plesk + Digital ocean but Plesk was just too much for my needs making it hard to action common settings for apps. Cloudways has a great model. Giving you access to just the key settings you need when working with websites. So it's all easy to find. I run a staging and live site with ease and also have a tracking tool running as another app (a breeze to set up compared to the headaches I had on shared hosting). Speaking of which their caching plugin breeze and their CDN increased my site speed immediately.

If I were you I would start on the lowest server and you're going to see a massive bump and speed almost instantaneously. Cloudways has automated bots that will notify you of the resource utilization on your server. So if you are running out of memory it will let you know that so that you can consider going up.
@EricThomson

I spoke to tech support re how the resources pan out but I can not get the live chat back up. I suggest contacting them and asking them via live chat. It is not easy for them to estimate on how you are going to use the resources so I said 2 websites on the lower package and how many visits per month could I get without noticing a change in speed etc.. If I remember its like not far of 100k.. Happy for someone to guestimate that who has an account. I am left feeling this is a no brainer :)

Great video Adam, I've been anxiously awaiting your review! Question for you, how do you handle server level file management with Cloudways? I am someone who has always used cPanel and its build in File Manager. I know you can access Cloudways servers and applications through SFTP but it tends to be quite slow, especially when deleting a large amount of files. Has this been a hindrance for you or is there a workaround that I'm unaware of? Thanks Adam!
@WPCrafter
@WPCrafter 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah the reason they don't have a file manager in the control panel is because of security issues that it opens up. I personally use an FTP program for that. However they have an article on their blog about a WordPress plug-in that you can add which will allow you to access the files.

Great video Adam. I have clients on shared hosting and looking to move hosts to something more WP-centric as I'm pushing WP these days. So this has come in handy. Also considering Siteground. I had also considered using Gmail for client domain emails but after contacting GSuite they inform me that is not possible and the only option is GSuite's paid services. I'm a bit surprised as I have, within the last few days set up one of my own email addresses on a free Gmail account. I just wondered what your thoughts would be?
@WPCrafter
@WPCrafter 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the two hosting options that you're considering are excellent. I will say that Siteground gets expensive depending on how you want to set up and how long you prepay up front. So if you got one shared hosting account was Siteground you can host multiple websites but they won't have separate logins or any separation at all. The nice thing with Cloudways is all the websites have that separation. But the big negative is with the email, when I was talking about using Google apps it's only paid Google apps. Of course Cloudways has that alternative with rack space works only one dollar per email per month.

What's nice about Cloudways is they have an automated bot that will keep you in the loop of what's going on with your servers. So what happens is if you start getting notifications consistently that the CPU is being close to 100% utilized, then you know it's time to either upgrade that server or add a new one. It all depends on the type of websites that you're adding and the demands that they place on the server. I'll tell you though that you can fit a lot of websites on a single server if it's those simple brochure websites and especially if you have caching enabled.

Hello Adam, Thanks for your wonderful videos! 1. I am using cloudways too, but I have one major problem they can not solve. I work on an woocommerce site with 2000 products (but no traffic yet) and want to have several backups a day, even hourly. In theory this can be done via their control panel which is good. But every time a backup is taken the performance drops to almost zero for many minutes (the time the backup takes). I tried both cloudways' digitalocean as vultr servers, and tried the 1GB, 2GB and 4GB machines, but all have those problems, even the 4GB machine spikes to 60% and often 100% of cpu utilisation. I find out this is due to the duplicity backup software cloudways installs on our servers. Anyway I talked many times to cloudways, and the only suggestion they have to limit the backups to one per day which is not acceptable. I proposed them to run the backups not from the machines itself (which eats up almost all resources) , but to run the backup software from an external server, but they did not take this suggestion serious. Did you run into this problem too? If so, how did you solve this backup problem? 2. Another thing, is it safe do push changes from the staging server to a live woocommerce server with ongoing traffic? If not, how can this problem be solved? 3. Another problem that I have with woocommerce and cloudways is getting the varnish cache, the letsencrypt free ssl, and the cloudflare dns to work smoothly, this setup regularly breaks for some reason. Any experience or advise on this? Thank you very much!

I signed up to cloudways using the link on your website. As soon as I signed up they ask me to verify using my Driving License + LinkedIn profile + Facebook URL + Phone Number. I don't know if this is the experience everyone has. Cloudways won't allow me to login and buy anything unless I send this information before hand. So much friction during signup that I gave up.

Question: Can you do a video about what resources you need to host a video lesson site like yours? You say in this video that you use Vultr: 8GB RAM, 4Core, 160GB disk, 5 TB bandwidth. That is a lot but you have lots of content and customers. What kind of resources do you need if you only have one course with 10h of video? And if you host the video on Vimeo would the bandwidth count through your hosting or would that video stream go directly to the end user without affecting your hosting bandwidth? Are there better solutions for where you place the videos?

@@WPCrafter Yes I probably can in the beginning but as someone that doesn't have any data on how much traffic videos generate I am uncertain how video hosting works in relationship to bandwidth traffic. That would be an interesting video if you did one. As you have data and experience and know if it matters if you host the videos on your wordpress site or on Vimeo or AWS etc. I have heard that hosting videos on your own server gets tricky in terms of server settings and codecs etc. If I have 10h 1080p videos that will max out traffic quite fast I Guess?

Most WordPress websites use under 100 MB of storage. As you start adding images of course more storage gets consumed. Also I've noticed most like traffic websites will use less than 1 GB of traffic per month. Every website is different. The WPCrafter.com website is around 500 megs in size and consumes around 75 GB of traffic per month.

@@WPCrafter so even a website like yours, the basic plan would be enough per their specs? or 1GB of ram probably too low? even pricing doesn't seem that bad... especially considering that other hostings you have to jump through hoops to get special pricing and once that period is over, their regular pricing is way higher. I guess they cater to different niches/audience.

Adam, so this vs Siteground ... doesn't look that much pricier... Siteground the GrowBig plan offers 20GB for 25,000 visits/mo and is 5.95 however regular pricing is 19.95 ...this is only 11$ or so ... siteground is shared hosting this is not... so what gives the pricing? there are no free lunches so I am scratching my head to see what is going on here?

Well with Cloudways its just gonna be a lot faster because it doesn't run cpanel. There is no traffic limitation or limitation on resource utilization. Also with Siteground you don't get staging on that plan, no Redis, no Varnish, non of that. Really 25k visits across all sites is extremely low. If you have 2 websites, that's only 416 visits per day per website. Heck bots will take up half of that.
