Southwest is already in Hawaii as it has been since this April. Direct flights from U.S. mainland to Honolulu and Maui. Inter-island flights HNL Maui (OGG) and Kona (KOA). Starting Lihue (LIH) and Hilo (ITO) in January. Low fares, no bag fees. Love it.

One could be forgiven in thinking that you are not in the Aloha State but landing in Seattle or perhaps British Columbia,what with the overcast and rain.Always have wondered how aircraft don't manage to hydroplane on the runway--if any one of us were to drive our cars at say,180mph on an interstate,we wouldn't live to see tomorrow's sunrise! Ours cars would be wrapped around a tree or telephone pole! :) Did you spend any time on this island?

I didn't spend any time on Maui on this trip, but I have in the past. Maui is my least favorite of the Hawaiian Islands. It's my wife's favorite though. If that tells you anything haha. I like to stay busy on vacation. See things, visit new places, etc. My wife on the other hand is fine just chilling at a resort. There is a lot of the resort life on Maui. The road to Hana was very cool though. It was the highlight of Maui for me. As for the runways and hydroplaning. A lot of commercial airport runways are pretty heavily grooved, to help dispel the water quicker. It's probably rough on tires, but airplane tires are changed pretty frequently anyways. Runways also have a decent amount of slope built in to them to also help with drainage. In fact, a lot of engineering goes into drainage as a whole when runways are being built. It was just the way the weather was on that day. It was a bit unusual for Hawaii though. Usually it's sunny and bright, not gloomy and cloudy like it was here.
