Clover Food Plot | Northwoods Clover Plus Chicory Review

So in this video I will be updating the progress of my clover food plot I planted in the spring of 2020. I will also be reviewing the seed that I used which was Northwoods Whitetails Clover plus Chicory mix.

I planted that same stuff this year behind my house. Really impressed with how it came in. I already have deer in it every day multiple times. When I'm doing yard work they wait about 50 yards away and come in as soon as I leave.

Thanks for watching ! I did a soil test and ended up using triple 19. Usually before a rain. One time in the summer and one time in the fall. If there were any patchy spots I would frost seed those in the spring.

Can we cut clover brassica mix.?

How is the attraction to a clover/ chicory plot later in the season, say december and cold weather and maybe a good snow? Both go dormant is that correct? I have a small plot say 1/5 acre, that about the only plant that will survive the browse pressure is clover or rye so looking for a solid mix for a smaller plot.

So in my experience here in southern Michigan that clover plot starts getting action late October all the way through January. Now I think it greatly depends on the weather. If we have a mild winter it will get used almost constantly through the winter months. If we have a very cold winter they will use it but seem to prefer the corn, soybeans and brassicas that are about 200 yards from this plot. I believe you right with the clover and chicory going dormant after the temps are constantly below freezing. I’m not an expert but I think this mix would definitely be worth trying in your situation👍.

@@michiganoutdooraddiction4543 Thanks for the tips, I may try it. The small brassica plot got demolished before late season last year. I read chicory ranked 2nd only to soybeans in deer preference from a study Craig harper did.

@@Mo75149-j I would agree. That clover and chicory plot I have is now mainly just clover. They really like the Chicory.

Have you ever compared it to WI fusion? Side by side or a nearby plot?

I have not. Honestly I've had such great luck with this blend I haven't really tried any others. I will look into the WI fusion, not very familiar with it.

I don't buy any blend that contains chicory because it nullifies your ability to use just about any herbicide for weed control.

Yup I agree with that. The only herbicide I've found that wont kill the chicory is IMOX. Downside is that its very expensive.

Not true. North woods has a herbicide that will only kill grass in a chicory plot.

@@nathanknapp4476 There are a few options that will only kill grass in a chicory plot, but the problem is that with chicory you can't be indiscriminate as to when you apply the herbicide like you can with clover and alfalfa. So having chicory in the plot creates a very narrow window for successful use. IMOX works best if applied correctly.
