Me: “ he thinks I’m going for fire so they would go for water so that means I need to use ice but that’s what they think I’m going to use so they would use fire so I need to use water”

But they need an ice card more than the others so they'll probably play ice so I should do fire but I can't risk them landing fire so therefore I should do water

My 2 theories that I would apply are: 1. First card will either be the lowest value or the one with the most of the same type (if i have 4 waters, I'll use the lowest value of that) 2. If they have 2 cards won, I would choose the highest value of the same element. They probably expect me to counter fire using water, so they'll use snow meaning I'd win with fire! And even if they do go fire, I have a chance at stopping them with my higher valued fire

I had several tins of the physical card-jitsu cards. I collected them more than I ever collected pokemon or other cards, it was borderline an obsession. I eventually lost them over the years, but my parents gifted me one they found at a garage sale for nostalgia sake. Great times!

Card Jitsu and Club Penguin's Ninja Stories is arguably the thing that got me into Martial Arts. My college project was an '80s inspired ninja film, I love Cobra Kai, I practice Shotokan Karate! It's all because of your hot sauce, water balloon, and snowball chucking penguins. I still listen to the soundtrack for Card Jitsu before I go to my dojo! The Battle themes all work for a Warmup, November in Okinawa as a cool-down, and the Dojo theme for any other time on the way there. So, thank you Chris. Thanks to you and Lance and the rest of the team. This was an amazing video about something that really means a lot to me, and doubtless does to thousands of others too.

It's always so fascinating to look back at the 'how they did it' aspect. As a kid, I was really captivated by the charm of Club Penguin and the creative people behind it, and now, as a creative myself, I deeply appreciate how you and your team built such a lasting legacy. Thank you, Chris, for giving us an insight on the technical side of this incredible experience. As a free user from back in the day, the Ninja Hideout really meant a lot to me, it was an exclusive room I actually could get inside of, and by climbing my way up a martial art nonetheless. Yeah, I could sadly never do or get any of the fun stuff there, but just by existing, it made me feel like I earned a status close to a Member. _OH, but when Card Jitsu Water came out, and the Member only games were free for everyone?_ OH MAN, you can bet I was all over it. Finally a chance to show my potential to the world, I got all the gear in a week and cherished it with my life forever more. I liked the first attempt, but when I heard the second attempt I was pretty blown away. I don't understand why the team all thought it needed to be much more aggressive, considering this was a silly fun game about slapstick fighting, but hey, what do we know? Thank you so much for this video Chris - I sadly had to say goodbye to one of my pet cats today (her name was Mojo - she was 8 years old and was suffering with kidney disease) - so this was something that really helped out even more than usual. I grew up playing Club Penguin from 2007-2017, plus CP Rewritten from 2019-2022, and loved Card Jitsu, Card Jitsu Fire, Water and Snow (wish Shadow was also made!) This was certainly an amazing video to watch in terms of listening back to the amazing music made for the game, but also the behind-the-scenes into the mode itself. In short - keep up the great work, and all the best for the future. 🐧🥷❤️

One of the things i love most about your Club Penguin songs, is the fact that they were so Yamaha in sound, the average consumer may not like it, but i'm all for the MIDIness, something the later, newer songs kinda lack in that cheesy feel, instead, more subtle instruments, they are fine, but just not as special.

i was NOT prepared for that jazzy bassline in the second card jitsu demo LOL. I'm hilariously getting skull girls energy from it. In a bizarre way, I almost prefer the second demo because of how it clearly it's _not_ ninja music, it's super silly and comedic and I think that really lends to the chaos of card-jitsu's faux martial arts. I will also say, you were talking a lot about not really having any great drum samples 2008, but IMO those really synthetic oversaturated and driven samples are so distinctly club penguin to me. They're super invocative of time and even though that's absolutely nostalgia talking, I think retroactively they really add to the charm. As always, I love you sharing your insights on the game Chris! These videos are always a blast to watch.

I always feel bad about Card-Jitsu bc as a child I was stupid and would get upset playing the game. Why? "How am I supposed to know what card to play if I can't see what card the opponent is going to play?" I'd try to play it, use my highest number cards, get upset and rage quit. Could not wrap my mind around it. There's so much love put into Card-Jitsu I feel like I failed as the target demographic and I'm so sorry. If the game was still around I'd try to play it again. I can only understand the difficulties of early projects, where unfortunately the more fun parts are put (temporarily) to one side, but that's what all their charms are about. some thoughts while watching this video: ninja music #2 is FIREEEE! but i see how it wasn't the right choice for card-jitsu. the theme that you ended up landing on was perfect and i still know the entire thing by heart. i never knew that the dojo theme for the online game was inspired by the DS game. i played both growing up and hearing that they were so similar made sense since they were the same place, but i totally thought the DS dojo theme was inspired by the online dojo theme because the DS version came AFTER club penguin. that's so cool! i love how you took his idea and expanded on it. it made a perfect theme for the online dojo and a great transition between the online game vs the DS game. card-jitsu fire was my absolute favourite of the three spin off games. hearing all the tracks next to each just shows how big of an improvement those new instrument plugs were. i'm feeling very nostalgic now. i still have my sensei dressed in his fire suit plushie. he lives on a shelf in my kitchen protecting my spices. coming back to card-jitsu water as an adult makes some much more sense because as a child i NEVER understood how to play that game. i would just spam click stuff and i never finished the water suit (also i don't think my computer could even handle the gameplay and graphics at the time). i am very grateful to these rewritten versions and i have now completed it. i agree too that the more airy and bubbly sounding tracks would've fit much better. i really enjoy the first one. i'm okay with not hearing card-jitsu snow because i couldn't get my shitty 2000s computer to run the gameplay LOL! NO WAY CARD-JITSU 2024 REMASTERD!!!!!!!

Thanks for another amazing video. I love hearing the first-account backstory of something as generationally transformative as Club Penguin. But I must also give credit to your delivery and story telling ability that keeps us all coming back.

It’s so nice seeing how you progressed with the music tracks for cardjitzu. Always a nice thing to see in the mind of the creator. Ps: 18:34-18:51 has always been my favorite part

Honestly your "perfect" Card Jitsu song probably could've worked well as the Dojo room music. I definitely could hear inklings of the final tune in it, but the final music for both the game and the room are such iconic tunes, it's hard to imagine them being anything else

Dude, the main fighting theme is forever engrained into my brain. Rarely even playing in my head randomly and I have to watch some gameplay of it. The hours I spent earning a black belt, buying cards from real stores in person... what a great time, thanks for contributing to those fond memories. You have a lot of talent, and passion I feel like is rarely seen in industries today.

Something I thought about was that the Unused Ninja Music #4 (with a couple tweaks), could be played when you're challenging Sensei in normal Card-Jitsu. Just an idea that came into that large noggin of mine. Great video as always!

Wow. I knew I liked the other Card Jitsu game music more than water but I didn't know why. I love how you can feel the heat and intensity in the Fire themes and the coldness in the Snow themes (which I think did a good job taking inspiration from your style). I think you may have nailed what was missing.

This was such a great video! A piece of history on such a big online game, even if it touched a small part of the whole. Also loved the dive into the creative process of it all. Glad you found those demo files after all!

The physical cards were our absolute favorite game to play on the school bus. Thanks for making such a memorable contribution to my childhood! Fire was my favorite of the three elemental games on the actual site; those crisp instruments made it feel sufficiently tense!
