Forget the horn. It's the person that makes the instrument. And the person is gone forever. And that's what makes it so beautiful, this mortality of the individual, but the music lives forever in others. And that is what makes it last forever.

There was simply no one better at handling a top-shelf ballad like this than the late, great Dexter Gordon: the peerless sauvity & taste; the seemingly-endless reserves of musical invention; and of course the huge ravishing lyrical tone. His cadenzas alone are like a master class in Jazz phrasing. Simply superb!

The early 60's were Dexter's best years, such beautiful improvising. Drew and Taylor are also exceptional musicians.

just been "re-watching" "Round Midnight" and marvelling at this man's beautiful rendering of this lovely piece about a love affair coming to an end. Dexter played it like he was singing and feeling the lyrics-masterful!

Dexter IS one of the Jazz Immortals. This video exemplifies why, it's either that simple or it's not. The terrible shame is that not all of us know this, I would love for the future generations to be taught this however..... rather than hate, prejudice, and war.

"You've Changed" is one of my favorite of Dexter's recorded ballad performances. Thanks Julio for posting this live version. It's beautiful to hear the subtle differences in this recorded version vs. the Blue Note recording I'm familiar with. Long live LTD!

With a glorious intent, Dexter used to examine, dissect, investigate, consider, embrace, reconstruct, reshape, adorn, remodel any song, any sculptured phrase, giving us a friendly but professionally detached insight into a way of thinking, feeling.
